Creature Beast
Flying
Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks, defending player chooses any number of creature cards from his or her hand on the bottom of his or her library in any order. |
5/2
#Man, these names are definitely getting better. That Exalted reminder text is pretty wonky. Also, 5/2 flying exalted is busted for 3.

Regress the Heal {1}{G}
Creature Beast

{B}: Regenerate $THIS.
#I guess it's a one-mana counterspell that you need Vedalken Orrery or Leyline of anticipation to cast. That's... almost cool. And it regenerates!

Looking good!
You know, this has me thinking. For this to output good cards, we'll need to be able to insert some human guidance. Powerstone is a valid card, but the damage doesn't match the mana cost. Rather than up or down voting, as was mentioned a few days ago, it may be possible for us to take an output, make corrections to that output, and then have it reweight itself so that under the same circumstances it would be more likely to produce an appropriately strong version of the card (Powerstone dealing 5 or 6 damage, for instance). I'll look into that possibility.
EDIT: Effectively, the original training phase will be our unsupervised pre-training, followed by a supervised training phase. What we do is we run the network with a given seed, make corrections to the output, and run the network again, this time correcting it every time it diverges from the output that we wanted it to have in the first place. The question is: how much human labor is needed? lol.
Well, I ran those experiments on a rather insubstantial dual-core machine with no usable GPU. In the lab, they're setting up a 64-core Intel Phi machine and I've been told that we'll be getting some Nividia Kepler GPUs. The math all boils down to relatively simple vector and matrix operations, and that can be done very efficiently with a good combination of CPUs and GPUs. The algorithms we're dealing with are extremely scalable, so the more computing power you can throw at it, the better.
If it's easily scalable, what are the chances/challenges of setting up a distributed computing network in the vein of a BOINC project? I'd love to donate my CPU time to this, but I have little desire to reinvent the wheel by training my own neural net from the ground up.
Angel's Reachemare is my favorite computer generated card so far for sure.
Using human input about design quality seems like it could defeat the purpose of having a computer design magic cards. You want to get those cards that no human would ever make. And if you keep telling it you like it when the goblins are red, you're going in the opposite direction from that and you'll never get the crazy thing like a black unicorn with an unearth cost, but no mana cost that no human would think of (and that is just me being human and trying to come up with something off the wall so the computer could go even further off the wall possibly!).
I think that goes for power level too, human concepts of power level could corrupt it.
If you use human input, I think it would be best to do it in the black and white way of things like "hey, sorry computer, it's not that this card is bad, it's that this card isn't a card because it's a sorcery with nothing but nouns in the text". Telling it when cards aren't cards, so there's less non-cards to sift through. Even then I would be cautious and not be overzealous with that, like don't get mad at it for wanting to unmorph an instant if the nouns and verbs are there and stuff. Like OP said earlier, you might "scare" it away from innovating too much. It's be really cool to see a mosh of words actually coalesce into a new ability that works.

That's just my 2 cents.
No, you make a good point. It would probably best to just try to educate the network against errors rather than try to teach it to create "good" cards, as human hands would corrupt the process.

The thing is that the data set is so small that I think that would be overkill. It's just that the network size and input size is *just* large enough to be tedious on a run-of-the-mill machine. That being said, I think Torch has at least some support for distributed computing, so it's not out of the question.
VirtualBox creates a virtual GPU as well, under normal circumstances. In order to get GPU-acceleration, you'd need to actually run Ubuntu directly, or mess around with some experimental stuff that's well beyond me.
I'd be interested in sponsoring further development of this card generation project.
Some other considerations: images, flavor text, card titles. Perhaps there is some opportunity to create cards that are educational. example: flavor text = Jeopardy answers, card name = corresponding Jeopardy question (what is x?), image = pic of the card name, possibly sourced through google image search or public resources. It'd be a separate project but something that replaces images, flavor text and card titles for MTGO would be fun, and potentially functional flashcard replacements.
If you could come up with a basic proposal for how this could be turned in to something to benefit the community, perhaps we could take it to Lighthouse or Kickstarter. There may be some people you'd like to conscript to the team. I'd be in for at least 10 bitcoin/$2500.
Weyling Troll {3}{R}
Creature Ogre
Haste
Whenever you roll {C}, copy that spell unless its controller pays {2}, where X is the number of +1/+1 counters on it.
Creatures can't attack from the copy.
Bestow {4}{W} (If you cast this card for its bestow cost, it's an Aura spell, you may sacrifice target attacking creature.)
3/2
#Is {C} supposed to be a new kind of mana? How does one roll it?
{C} is the Chaos die from Planechase. I'd guess you fed it Plane cards.
Been playing around with this last night and today.
Been gettign some good balanced results, but trying to figure out how to have them not violate the color pie so blatantly.
I also want to split by types, but that gets a lot of unique hybrids...but most are awful.
Examples I've gotten:
Russark Caba 1G
Legendary Creature - Dwarf Elf
When $THIS enteres the battlefield, put a 1/1 white Goblin Archer creature token onto the battlefield
2/1
Iron Weader B
Instant
Put a 1/1 white Soldier creature token onto the battlefield.
North the Undisider
Land T: Add G or W to your mana pool.
Equip 2
Silver Blood 1
Artifact T: Put a 1/1 white Dragon creature token onto the battlefield.
Lava Dead
Land T: Add 1 to your mana pool. 1GGT: Target player reveals his or her hand onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature. $THIS deals 4 damage to you.
As Blook 1G
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant numbed creature
Eycondance Scarpice 1UU
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1.
Flashback W(You may cast this spell any time you could cast an instant)
Flashback (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more green or black creatures.)
Razos Mony Ampharian 2WW
Creature - Spirit
Flash
Whenever a player attacks you, search your library for up to five cards, put them onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library.
3/2
And then gibberish like this:
Seash Panistmer 2R
Instant
As an additional cost to cast $THIS, it deals damage equal to its power to target creature. Another target creature becomes a Monntefilk.
Razos Mony Ampharian 2WW
Creature - Spirit
Flash
Whenever a player attacks you, search your library for up to five cards, put them onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library.
3/2
I don't want to be in a tournament where I can expect the players to attack me.
If Izzy is still taking votes, I'm voting for Slidshocking Krow. Though Shring the Artist and Carnor Sprith are pretty entertaining too.
Furtoraw 4G
Creature — Angel
As $THIS enters the battlefield, sacrifice it.) 1B: Creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn.
When $THIS enters the battlefield, destroy it at the beginning of your upkeep, put it into its owner's control.

Ok so got mine set up and running. Unfortunately I'm like super limited by my sudden discovery that my quad core processor is only using 1 for the virtual machine. It's currently exporting a file from my most recent checkpoint, after it ends I'll post the highlights and then see if I can get it to use more than one core.

Rest in RIP My Signature, I guess. 2015-2016, we hardly knew ye.
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
Did you remember to run this line after install?
"source ~/.bashrc"
I gave up and started from the beginning. Don't know what I did wrong the first time, but I got something running now! Let's see if it gets me somewhere
I haven't got a clue what I'm doing really, just following the steps from Kinje's post. Like I said, I'm good with regexp, but this is just a bit beyond me on a technical level. Doesn't mean I can't (after a few tries) follow the steps though
Anyway, I used "th train.lua -data_dir data/Formatted -gpuid -1 -eval_val_every 3600" as the command (after eval_every_3600 was rejected as a parameter, I have no clue whether that space should be there between "eval_val_every" and "3600", but the network is training now, so apparently it's valid input).
I did change my file a bit by the way. The new version has all instances of card names in the rules text replaced by "$THIS", which is the version I'm using now. I'm guessing you're using the version I uploaded yesterday, which still has the cardnames in the rules text. Should be interesting to see if it makes a difference!
Edit: I expect the first epoch to last another four to five hours, at which point I won't be at home... First results tonight if everything works according to plan!

The question is: how much human labor is needed? lol.

Not just a Donger... an Ancient Donger.
If it's easily scalable, what are the chances/challenges of setting up a distributed computing network in the vein of a BOINC project? I'd love to donate my CPU time to this, but I have little desire to reinvent the wheel by training my own neural net from the ground up.

{C} is the Chaos die from Planechase. I'd guess you fed it Plane cards.
This ability only has an effect if you're the one paying 2R.
Been gettign some good balanced results, but trying to figure out how to have them not violate the color pie so blatantly.
I also want to split by types, but that gets a lot of unique hybrids...but most are awful.

I gave up and started from the beginning. Don't know what I did wrong the first time, but I got something running now! Let's see if it gets me somewhere
I'm using this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxPP6EqKkrD8a2xYQ0dBWUZWUzQ/view?usp=sharing
