I've been working on custom cards based around the League of Legends champions and since I'm still new to creating cards and don't have a very firm grasp on what makes a card balanced, I thought I might post them here for critiquing. I've read the rules and looked through the FAQ, but I don't see anything on posting original cards like that. Is such a thing disallowed, discouraged, or simply never been done?
People post pop-culture based cards like your League of Legends cards quite frequently in Custom Card Creation. You might even want to create a League of Legends set thread in the Custom Set Creation and Discussion sub-topic.

I'm currently working on a small set called From the Catacombs.
Check out my new blog about artificial intelligence. Thanks!

Take a look at current sets, preferably in the commons/uncommons rather than rares and mythics.
Does you card come close to power level and complexity in those cards?
Having tournament experience also helps.

"Sometimes, the situation is outracing a threat, sometimes it's ignoring it, and sometimes it involves sideboarding in 4x Hope//Pray." --Doug Linn
Because it lets you evaluate card _balance_ better.
One egregious example off the top of my head was one poster that I said, "oath of druids/reanimation/other cheaty effect would totally break this, since nothing can kill it."
Then he goes "wrath of god (and a litany of other cards)"... none of which are even remotely playable in a format where oath is playable. Sure, he's right that wrath would kill it. But that's purely an on-paper knowledge, rather than practical, tournament knowledge.

Thanks everyone who responded. At first glance I was seeing a lot of purely custom cards and nothing that was based on something, so I thought I'd ask beforehand.

No matter if you're posting rendered cards or not, the courtesy is to post text cards.

Does it? Why do you say that?
Anyway League of Legends cards would be fine. Just remember to follow the rules about posting text version, and having artist credits etc.
Are you designing commons? Check out my primer on NWO.
Interested in making a custom set? Check out my Set skeleton and archetype primer.
I also write articles about getting started with custom card creation.
Go and PLAYTEST your designs, you will learn more in a single playtests than a dozen discussions.
My custom sets:
Dreamscape
Coins of Mercalis [COMPLETE]
Exodus of Zendikar - ON HOLD
