Embermage DynamoRR
Creature – Elemental Shaman (Rare)
Embermage Dynamo’s power and toughness are each equal to the amount of mana in your mana pool.
Mana pools don’t empty at the end of phases or turns. (This effect stops mana burn.)

I had an idea that was similar to the new Zendikons. I called it <land>wake (Islandwake) and it worked like the oblivion ring effect with exiling a land and getting it back when the creature died. One of the cards that I had designed was identical to Wind Zendikon. Can't wait to play with it.
The most common design for Platinum Demon was 4 for a 7/7 artifact creature with flying.
A couple years ago, I heard someone make an off-hand comment about how vintage/legacy players will often play Time Walk on turn one or two simply for the extra card draw and the extra land drop. So inspired mostly by that statement and taking some cues for cost from Summer Bloom, I made this card that I initially named Summer Walk:
Summer Solstice1G
Sorcery (U)
You may play an additional land this turn.
Draw a card. The days grow longer, yet time walks ever onward.
I made it uncommon like Summer Bloom because it is a simple and decently strong ability, but not necessarily something that worthwhile for limited.
Naming this card Explore as a riff on Exploration seems pretty obvious in hindsight, and it makes a great common in a limited environment like Zendikar.
EDIT: ... And a common 2 power two mana Griffin named Fledgling Griffin that can jump:
Fledgling Griffin1W
Creature -- Griffin (C) W: CARDNAME gets +0/+1 and gains flying until end of turn.
2/1
This started as a 1/1 for one mana with the same ability, but I pushed it up when it was said to be too weak.
Uncast1U
Instant
Kicker 2U
You may pay Uncast's Kicker cost any number of times.
Counter target instant or sorcery spell. If the Kicker cost was paid, copy that spell for each time the Kicker cost was paid. You may choose new targets for the copies.
I came up with a card identical to Really Far Away Drake, which is no great feat by itself, but it was like the day before I saw that article. Freaked me out. Mine was missing that great flavor, however.
Have you guys see Eye of Ugin? I have a set which revoloves around colored v. multicolored v. colorless, with colorless spells (and artifacts) forming at least half of the first set in the block.
Whoops - 1WBR
Instant
Untap and gain control of target permanent until end of turn. That permanent gains Haste until end of turn. At end of turn, destroy it.
Also from a 2007 design: "Immortal: When this is put into a graveyard from play without an Immortal counter on this, return this to play with an Immortal counter on this."
This may sound silly, but i used to frequently write to WoTC about job (i like to create cards and new mechanics) and on one of the emails i sent them (it had to be somewhere around ALARA REBORN) i also included a MSE-created card with the subtipe ''quest'' - i got the idea from WOW tcg. The response was same as usual - i was told due to my location in Europe i could not be hired by them or something like that, etc. Imagine my response to the QUEST cards that followed a while after this email...
They're not allowed to read ideas in e-mails, so this probably wasn't stolen from you

By that time they were already done creating the cards, and were somewhere in development.

Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
Troll shroud, aka Veil, has been my idea for years... http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/node/1947 - old, old set, but it was still created a year after I started using Veil with my friends and so on.

Well, that is sort of like saying that you designed a card a little bit like Threaten before Onslaught came out, but five years after Ray of Command was printed. Slave of Bolas was designed (I'm fairly certain) to be a simplified version of Spinal Embrace.
Phyrexian Energy Forge
Land
:symtap:: add to your mana pool.
Lands you control enter the battlefield untapped.
(though the wording was wrong.)
Quite coincidental that this would be right around the time that Wizards decided to switch Amulet of Vigor to an artifact...
And I think that I can safely say that I was the first one to notice that Amulet of Vigor + Thawing Glaciers interaction... around 3 months before the set came out.
Just a little card I didn't even remember making until I saw it in an unused MTG Set Editor file a day or so ago.

Whenever a permanent enters the battlefield under your control, you may untap it.
Quite similar to Amulet of Vigor, although mine is a bit better. I remember when I made it, the idea of the card was to have lands get an extra mana the turn you played them, even if they were basic. It might be a bit powerful as is.
So this new level up mechanic is awfully similar to a concept I've had for a long time, though I called it "experience" and it was a triggered ability. It's even the main key word in Aegis, the community-made block from the We Make The Set games in the custom card games forum.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.

Yeah, a lot of us already noticed that too. It's an honor. ^.^
Remember Stone Idol Trap? That's a lot like a mechanic we had for a year already, also in Aegis block.

Legendary Creature -- Elf Knight (R)
First strike
When Swiftblade the Wanderer comes into play, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a nonland card. Put the cards revealed this way into your hand.

Especially potent with Scouting Trek, but usually closer to just a cantrip.

I actually got a LOT closer to Abyssal Persecutor... and I made my card before he did
I just didn't happen to stumble upon it while searching for a lengthy post about the color pie.
Made that for one of my sets more than a year ago.
But, I think we all agree Surging Chaos wins this one
