The designs are cool, even if they need a bit of development (I think the life drain should probably be 1WB, though I'm a terrible developer). But the best thing about these, for me, is your flavor texts. Love it.
I'd be more comfortable with Pay Day at :1mana::symw::symb:. It seems like a card that would be frustrating to play against given what little investment it requires from my opponent.
"If a spell or ability would cause you to lose life this turn, you gain that much life instead." (and likewise for the other half) fixes that issue.
That wouldn't prevent combat damage which I think is a main facet of the card. However, I could possibly change it to "if you would take damage". The alternative is to just put a "you can't pay life this turn" which is inelegant but doesn't change the functionality.

The card, if it cost 2WB would still be playable, but it has to cost at least 1WB, and that would be a pushed version where extraordinary circumstances necessitated a card with those qualities.
The question here is: how much is a fifth of a person's life worth. I think the answer is more than 2.
A) I wanted the card to be pushed (again, I wanted it to be the strongest a simple drain spell could possibly get.)
B) If this drained for any less it would be an incredibly bad Lightning Helix. (The fixed cost was kind of the point of the thread and design exercise). Lightning helix is very pushed but not overpowered, and that's what I'm aiming for, so I think it's a reasonable comparison.
EDIT: One solution would be to unbalance the effect, for instance lose 3 gain 5 or something similar. Less elegant but it captures the same idea.
C) I doubt the card would be playable at 2WB (in constructed). 1WB might be a little more reasonable.
D) Pulse of the Forge, Flames of the Bloodhand are the closest comparisons for cards that deal 4 damage to a player. Both cost 3 and have upsides, but are instants and monocolored. This makes me feel this card is probably closest to on-curve at 1WB, but again I wanted to make it very pushed.
EDIT: Well, there's also Boros Charm, which is multicolored, is an instant, and has a lot more utility. I think it's a relevant point that boros charm is red, which makes it a lot easier to splash for in dedicated burn decks.
It's clear that pay day is very powerful, but my question is: is it unprintable? If you were told this card could be as powerful as it had to be within reason, would this be at the limit, or would it be over the edge?
It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
We don't have a formula to calculate mana/damage ratio. It really depends on the environment.
A single high damage spell can give a deck some reach, but if paired with other burn spells, makes the game uninteractive. That's why Char is a rare.
I guess this card is okay in Orzhov, because it's a color combination that really needs some reach - different from Boros or Rakdos that already have plenty of direct damage.

The question here is: how much is a fifth of a person's life worth. I think the answer is more than 2.
the difference between damage and life loss is completely negligible when costing magic cards. the benefit of life loss over damage is worth much less than 1 mana.
boros charm is a pretty good argument for why this card is fine at 2 mana. is 4 life better than the flexibility of the two other boros charm modes? its close at least. 1WB might be the correct cost, but i think pushing it to WB is justifiable. another reason why is that this card does not become significantly better at 2 mana instead of 3, since it doesn't affect the board and there is generally no lost opportunity if you have to wait a few turns to cast this.
Honestly, I think the closest to this card is Lightning Helix, much more than Boros Charm. And it justifies the cost of Pay Day. While this is very aggressive, Helix is much much more flexible. At 3 life drained, this much worse, because even if this damage can be prevented, the flexibility of board control is much much more relevant.
And BTW, Pay Day is absolutely awesome! Kudos!!

The charms utility is not equal to the complete upside of pay day. No matter what you get 4 life and take your opponent down 4. Boros charm at most can do 4 damage.
i don't get people who frame arguments by just listing what the card does. i can do the same. "boros charm is WAY better than this card. boron charm can give a creature double strike or make ALL your permanents indestructible. this card cannot." (see? that sentence was pointless.)
The fact of the matter is that lightning helix IS the most efficient life trade card in existence. If it were reprinted today, it'd be a 4 of in all decks that could run it. I don't see the need for something that's stronger than that. At 2 3-for-3 is amazing and its already pushed. If you want to go higher than that, for a sure thing you're going to need to pay more.
this paragraph would make perfect sense if you thought lightning helix couldn't hit creatures. given that it can, and you didn't mention it at all, i don't know what point you're trying to prove. its worse because it can't hit players and its better because it hits for more. is this give and take equal? that's what we're trying to figure out. i can't be sure if you even understand the give and take because you didn't acknowledge it at all.
I think that anyone who thinks this is an arguable point hasn't paid any attention to designs made that use this functionality. There's a reason to make it cost more, and its basically because if you don't do it you are traveling down a road to reduced complexity that gets boring and is capable of killing the game. Its a land full of 1 mana 3/3s and 1 mana 5 damage spells.
again, a paragraph that doesn't address the give and take of this card at all. you're just saying OMG look how much this card is taking!!!!
"If a spell or ability would cause you to lose life this turn, you gain that much life instead." (and likewise for the other half) fixes that issue.
Moon-E already pointed out that this isn't quite right because of combat, but there's more to it; this doesn't actually stop it from interacting with costs.
I think this is the correct wording:
If damage or an effect would cause you to lose life this turn, you gain that much life instead.
If an effect would cause an opponent to gain life this turn, that player loses that much life instead.
See Library of Leng. Paying a cost for a spell is still a spell causing you to lose life, oddly enough.
One thing that makes a big difference. Both Lightning Helix and Boros Charm are red. It means they're in a color combination with plenty of reach and another 4dmg spell would make burn decks so strong and uninteractive.
This is in Orzhov colors. Orzhov already has plenty of removal, so this doesn't need to hit creatures, but Orzhov really lacks reach, which this card provides nicely.

Now: Splash some red with some duals to get all of the efficient burn deck cards since you've already got access to red, and you have a deck that can outrace RDW simply because one of its cards has life gain.
and this is better than lightning bolt / boros charm / lightning helix? and before you tell me that it deals more damage and gains more life, so yes its better, remember the give and take. my hypothetical deck actually interacts with creature decks and is only 2 colors. you're positive a deck that doesn't is better?
I think the point here is: is this card very very good? Yup, sure is. But is it TOO good ? Or better yet, is this printable? I think so. This is in power level is almost equal to Lightning Helix.

I'm positive that a deck that can get my opponent to zero faster is all I'm after if I'm a spike.
I'm positive a deck that can interact with creatures and doesn't have to play 3 colors is better. IMO, playing additional colors is a huge price to pay when your entire game plan is playing burn spells in a hyper efficient manner. If this deck was good, it would already exist.

Well, that's almost equivalent to Pay Day. Guess I've figured out how to design magic cards.
Just had a conversation with a friend who occasionally pops in and lurks on these forums. He's a noobish designer, even more noobish than myself, but he's been really excited to share some of his ideas for an ancient egyptian themed set. he let me know that he hass decided not to post these designs, citing specifically this thread and the negative and sarcastic tone it's taken.

Well, that's almost equivalent to Pay Day. Guess I've figured out how to design magic cards.
Seriously, I think your comment is almost not worth replying to, but I will anyway. I believe you are comparing your "improvement" to how Pay day has bumped Lightning Helix's damage and life gain by one. But what you are not seeing is that the bump of 1 life and 1 life loss comes at the expense of hitting creatures and the flexibility of an instant. Seriously, I have RW deck with 4 Helixes, and I can honestly tell that I use it far more on creatures than on players. Each card has its pros and cons against each other. MOON-E was pretty clear on the intentions of Pay Day: to push direct drain as much as possible. Nobody is questioning if this card is strong. It is, very much so. But I think he went everywhere needed on design to make this happen in a plausible way. The CD cost is justified, as we have a black part and a white part. Yes, black can do it alone, but adding the white justifies each part doing better.
But let's go even further: Helix is half Lightning Bolt half(kinda) Healing Salve. Wizards made perfectly clear that the bolt is too strong, that's why we have Shock. Yet Helix not only was printed on Ravnica, it even came back later on, so it's not a design they regret or think was wrong in any way. It's ok to push the boundaries, but you have to do it correctly, and MOON-E right every right note in this case. Nobody is arguing that it pushes, it was the beginning of this design, but I see absolutely nothing wrong. Please look again at Helix and ALL differences between it and Pay Day. Everything is relevant here.

I think the opinion that Pay Day is pushed too far is entirely valid, but I don't think that the danger of having an all-burn, non-interactive deck would be the reason. I think the card is more dangerous in a random black/white deck than in a dedicated burn deck.

I certainly hope he doesn't miss an opportunity to develop because he was a afraid of the tone of my posts, but I also don't much mind.)
I'm gonna try to make him come around. There's good discussion here, from a lot of great posters, but I do think the discussion trends toward the disrespectful and sarcastic at times. And part of that is just how people present themselves, and isn't meant to be personal, but I think it'd be good for everyone to try and be aware on how the tone (not necessarily the content, but the presentation) of discussions like this can be misunderstood by new/potential posters and can prevent community growth.
In any case, back on topic, I think most people here agree that the card in question is pushed, and the disagreement comes where some think it's pushed too far to create an unhealthy game state. My question is this - is there a compromise here? An additional, non-mana cost that can be added to the card to nudge it more toward the 'balanced' end of the spectrum?
I don't know what you think you mean by that. Ravnica is by no means the benchmark for a balanced set in terms of power, and Lightning Helix has never been reprinted in a regular set.
A 10 point life swing for 2 mana is gross. This needs to cost along the lines of, I dunno, 2WB.
No, not in a regular set, in a Duel deck, but still. And I don't agree that Ravnica is a bad set to compare too. It is a set with very good cards, but not a broken set. And why not compare to the Helix, it is a pretty cool card, with an agressive design, just like Pay Day. I agree, for some people it might push a little too much, but I don't think so, and I think we have a pretty far comparison to work with.
Oh, and it's not a 10 point swing, it's 8.

Talking about Children of Korlis, maybe this would create less issues if it was a one time thing, like.

You gain life equal to the life you've lost this turn.
Each opponent loses life equal to life he or she gained this turn.
You know the part of the story where it turns out the guy you thought was helping was really stabbing you in the back? This is that part.
