The council is pleased to announce the establishment of the first ever mafia game design competition, decided by the players, and run as a PCQ. Here's how it will work.
Starting today, players can assemble dream teams of designers, or enter as lone wolves (with reviewer backup, per normal rules of two reviewers). If you're in a team, you might have a dedicated reviewer, a flavor writer, and an ability designer, for example, or split the responsibilities as you see fit. To enter, send me a PM with your name and/or the name of your team.
Rules:
1. Be awesome.
2. The design period will run three months, terminating on July the 5th.
3. On June the 1st, just to give everyone a taste of what's coming down the pipes, each host or team should prepare a flavor sample to post in the PCQ thread.
4. On July 5th, the PCQ round will commence. Once each host or team has posted a sample of their flavor and a game pitch in the PCQ thread, voting will commence, and will last a duration of two weeks. There are no restrictions on how designers should vote, other than to use their best tastes.
5. Multiple submissions by the same designer are permitted, and the same designer may join multiple teams - the idea is to bring out as many awesome ideas as possible. Also to crush all that stand in your way.
6. If you don't win, don't sweat it. We hope to have a great supply of high-quality games that everyone can enjoy, and that can fuel future PCQs and FTQs.
7. Those of you who are also on other websites: feel free to invite your friends to take part, if you think they'd enjoy this, and also the league games. The more, the merrier.
Let the games begin!

The shadows of the concrete jungle creep behind you, a shade as ominous as the pavement is cracked. Drugs, money, violence...this turf is still new to you, but you try your best to adapt. Unbeknownst to you, however, there's more at work than a simple, dilapidated urban sprawl. Let your mind take a journey into the roots of mankind's darkness. Greed, hatred, jealousy, anger...fear. The clock is ticking. Your days grow short. It's time to take a leap into the unknown.
You will become a Blood Brother, woven from dredged tales of another life.
Get used to the seedy wallpaper stained with cigarette smoke, treacherous smiles, and the need for stimulation of another kind. This is your new home.

The Oernum nations have feuded amongst each other for centuries. The last war encompassed the entire continent, and killed off all of the old leaders.
The deaths came at a poor time. Scattered across the lands, the new leaders, all of high school age, decided they should be schooled together to form new treaties. This would become known as the Hatframe Commission, and together they constructed Eleville High School.
But there is a new situation that is threatening the continent. Explorers have discovered new lands to the north, a new continent with no indigenous people, ripe for colonization.
The original idea was to wait until all the leaders had graduated, but it was discovered that a group was staking claims behind the backs of the others. The Eleville Claim-Club.
All hell has broken loose. All of the students must now stake claims on the new continent, while navigating the complex clique system, in order to either bring about a golden age of prosperity or an era of subjugation, and still make it through puberty and prom.
They say armageddon is nigh. They say the end will be signaled to us by the 7th Trumpet. His horsemen will follow.
But what if the horsemen were just average people - someone like you or me, someone from any way of life? Someone with potential that just needed to be awakened?
What if our destinies were about to unfold in a small room in front of a portly man with a long, curled moustache, a pinstriped suit, and a bowler hat?

The acid rain drizzled gently against Iji's skin, her Nanofield instantly repairing the small imperfections the droplets created in her skin. The atmosphere was all but gone...how could anyone have survived this barbaric attack in these conditions...?
"I tried to warn you, Iji. I tried to tell you that you weren't ready to see the surface of the planet. A lot happened in the months you were unconscious. But now...reasoning with the Tasen is our only hope to survive this. You've got to get your head on straight, sis - it's just you and me, now."
The Tasen, long-time foes of the Komato, have fled extinction to the only place they could - Earth - known to the Tasen and Komato as Origin, the First Planet.
The Tasen performed an Alpha Strike to eradicate mankind and quickly swooped in to secure a foothold in their push back against the Komato. But there were a few who survived. A girl named Iji was taken into a secret government lab and experimented on under knife until she could wield a Nanofield, an all-purpose collection of nanobots programmed to integrate themselves with a sentient being's lifeforce. With this technology at her disposal and the Komato aware of the Tasen's presence on Origin, Iji must race against time to convince both the Tasen and Komato forces to leave the few remaining humans in peace or destroy the invaders in the process. This is Iji Mafia: With a Vengeance.

Can we get some more specific rules for how this contest works for players who haven't been onsite long enough to moderate normally? Do we need to collaborate to enter, or what?
Well, I've had this one on my mind since my first game:
You've met with a terrible fate, Haven't you?
me too!
I think that makes three of us. (Okay, so actually I was thinking about refitting my old MafiaScum version, but close enough.) Perhaps a collaboration is in order (assuming that I'm allowed to)?
And yes, before you ask, I am Tarhalindur on Scum (and have considerable experience moderating over there.) I was going to see about keeping that quiet for a bit longer, but this contest changes things.
Can we get some more specific rules for how this contest works for players who haven't been onsite long enough to moderate normally? Do we need to collaborate to enter, or what?
Nope, newcomers with experience elsewhere are welcome to come on over, enter, and host games without restriction or partners, unless they want some.
When it comes to the voting phase, any one who has an interest in playing mafia games here is welcome to select their favorite option on the thread poll.

And that's why we should keep the 1 game max for each moderator. No matter how good/prolific a moderator is, he should not be able to monopolize the queues, diversity is good.
I would also be happy to work on a team, I think I have good design and balancing skills, I can't help with flavor or writing though.
EDIT: To clarify, when I said we should keep 1 game max per host, I meant the usual queues(mini, normal, speciality), I do think this experiment will work better with unlimited games per participant.
The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

Throwing myself out there as someone who is happy to work on a team.
My design and development experience includes multiple mafia games and a successful adult-rated TCG that's about to have its 5th set printed.
I am curious to know which adult TCG you made, but seeing it is you I am also quite scared at the same time.
Also I might throw my hat into the ring seeing as I've had a game that's been remade about four times and gone through several different flavors (though I think I hinted about it at the end of GHS Mafia). Hmm... decisions.
I am curious to know which adult TCG you made, but seeing it is you I am also quite scared at the same time.
How do you feel about anthropomorphic animals?
I'd like to be a team's flavor writer and/or reviewer. Flavor has always been my favorite aspect in Mafia. I'll try to keep an eye out for setups that intrigue me, but this thread is likely to get cluttered rather quickly. Send me PMs!

Funny how I've helped work on a mlp card game... but Seppel's game was a little much for me (and I suspect, for my gf). Game mechanics seemed solid though.

I see that you have edited the first post so that this is no longer the case. Why?
As my previous hint was probably too subtle, I would appreciate it if people kept the idle chatter in this thread to a minimum to facilitate readability. Thanks in advance.

My take on Terrible Fate mafia ( not to be confused with Meg's ) currently has one slot open and I'd much appreciate an experienced designers insight. Im planning on doing something challenging involving the core nature of Majoras mask's own gameplay: resetting time

Pretty much this exactly. I'd like to be involved in this, but I don't know how much use I'd be in the setup aspect. Flavor, though, that, I can handle.

I technically have Xyre tagging in with his Mr. Miyagi talents.
Majora's Mask is, and will remain for the forseeable future, the single darkest title in the LoZ franchise. Nintendo had intended to top it with Twilight Princess, but realized that the only possible way to do so would be to have the final fight against Ganon be unwinnable.
It was the first LoZ title I owned, and is the only one I have ever taken the time to 100%. I still discuss it alongside Mass Effect in terms of the amount of depth the game world contained. But that's me fanboying it up.

I've been contemplating a time travel based mafia game ever since I was writing Steins;Gate. I'm not mega-experienced, but I'd be willing to jump on.

Are there any other questions I can answer?

ANNOUNCING:
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Mafia
Dawn of the First Day.
72 Hours Remain.
Adaptation of the MafiaScum version and spiritual successor of bateleur's Hats Mafia. Focuses on the other core gameplay element of Majora's Mask: the masks! Masks are a lot like hats: you put them on and you gain abilities based on the mask you are wearing, and some players gain special powers if they are wearing a specific mask. On the other hand, masks are a lot unlike hats: you can only wear one mask at a time (unless an ability says otherwise), you can't take off your mask (unless an ability says otherwise), and not all masks have powers and/or superpowers.
In addition, Majora's Mask Mafia does not have day deadlines. Instead, Majora's Mask Mafia has a game deadline: when the game clock reaches 6:00 A.M. of the fourth day, the Moon crashes into Termina and the game ends in a Neutral victory. Use your time wisely!

Mind Screw Salvation Mafia
You don't get what's going on either.
One minute you're in your room, enjoying a recreational activity or just trying to sleep. The next minute, you're in this... test facility? There's a bunch of other people here, and you don't recognize any of them. And why are the signs all in... Chinese, maybe? Why is that, anyways?
<DISCONTINUITY>
[translated from Mandarin?]
"Chairman, we've gotten a report from research site A3. The parallel universe experiment worked, but there's been a complication regarding the ideological suitability of the alternates. Apparently the project was sabotaged by wreckers and saboteurs. There are rumors that the director of the facility was personally responsible."
"Get me my car. I want to deal with this personally."
<DISCONTINUITY>
<0>: The first rule is that I cannot tell you any of the other rules.
And so it begins...
It's something of a personal trademark, so of COURSE there's a Mind Screw setup in the works. New version of the Scum franchise. Chairman Mao has hidden the rules, if you want to see them you'll have to deal with him! Many of the roles in this game will alter the rules in some way. Fair warning: it's called Mind Screw Mafia for a reason. Expect bastardry from the mod. The Mod will not lie, but the truth can be very, very misleading...

Setup could use one or two reviewers/people to keep me within vaguely sane boundaries/flavor guys?. PM me if interested.

ANNOUNCING:
Iterated Mafia (name subject to change)
The ESF Tartarus was - is, at least for now - a modern marvel. She was designed for one purpose: to be the first ship specifically designed to investigate black holes at close range. With a hand-picked elite crew, she set off for the first candidate black hole a little over six months ago to start a multiyear mission of exploration.
That, of course, was then. Now, everything's shot all to hell. You should know. You saw it.
A little over a day ago, one of the key ship instruments went offline and a couple of other systems started to malfunction. You suspected mechanical failure at first - the designers did everything in their power to avoid malfunctions, but black swans will be black swans, especially in territory as uncharted as the environs near to the event horizon. Then some of the repair supplies went missing. Then the enthusiastic Engineer First Class Redd S. Hirtman, one of the most motivated repair workers, turned up dead with a knife in his back. And then the apparitions started...
Houston? We've had a problem.
An MTGS original! What would happen if abilities repeated on days after they were used? You're about to find out! Will you save the ESF Tartarus, or will you reduce it to a tool in your scheme? And is the Cult real, or the paranoid delusions of a crew slowly going mad? The mod isn't yet sure himself!
Current team: Taredas
Setup could use one or two reviewers/setup people?/flavor specialists?/people with opinions re: "is Cult too good of a fit for the core mechanic to pass up, or is it still too stupid to use?". PM if interested.
Also, I'd be willing to help any teams who need a setup person/reviewer. I'm more used to the MafiaScum meta than here*, but the design metas are not *that* different. PM me if interested.
* - example: Scum towns play weaker, so when calculating Mafia size/power Scum balance tends to round the number of Mafia down (i.e, 18 player single faction games on Scum usually have four scum), while MTGS towns play better and the number of Mafia rounds up (so usually five scum in an 18 player game here).

I guess I could do a flavor reskin just so that we don't have three of these in the submissions, but as usual I did the whole thing top down, flavorwise, so that might be hard.

Can we have Megiddo removed from the forum forever please?
i'm pretty sure i can find your ***** online within 3 minutes
Actually, fk it, I lied about not participating. (How can I resist?)
However, I will require a partner, for a few reasons. For one, I enjoyed having a partner to bounce ideas off with The Asphodel Meadows, and (if it's a newer mod) it'd also be a chance to reverse the "Miyagi" concept. Plus, I wouldn't be able to run the entire thing.
So, I'm looking for a partner or two. Principal requirement is you'll be able to run the game without me after August 31st. I'd also prefer it if you've hosted some game more complex than a basic before; I'm happy to take on an "apprentice", but I need at least a ground floor so things don't go flying off the rails.
Flavor, well... this game I envision as the concluding chapter of the Man in the Armani Suit story. But beyond the theme (post-apocalyptic), that gives a good deal of room to maneuver. I'll write the TMITAS pieces; everything else I'm happy to split however you would prefer.

War.
Famine.
Pestilence.
Death.
Will you be a harbinger of the endtimes?
Will you be...a Horseman of Apocalypse?

"They're dead...they're all dead."

You've met with a terrible fate, Haven't you?
I think that makes three of us. (Okay, so actually I was thinking about refitting my old MafiaScum version, but close enough.) Perhaps a collaboration is in order (assuming that I'm allowed to)?
And yes, before you ask, I am Tarhalindur on Scum (and have considerable experience moderating over there.) I was going to see about keeping that quiet for a bit longer, but this contest changes things.
It is too late for the pebbles to vote."
Nope, newcomers with experience elsewhere are welcome to come on over, enter, and host games without restriction or partners, unless they want some.
When it comes to the voting phase, any one who has an interest in playing mafia games here is welcome to select their favorite option on the thread poll.
Welcome over, by the way.
Are there any other questions I can answer?

I would also be happy to work on a team, I think I have good design and balancing skills, I can't help with flavor or writing though.
EDIT: To clarify, when I said we should keep 1 game max per host, I meant the usual queues(mini, normal, speciality), I do think this experiment will work better with unlimited games per participant.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
My design and development experience includes multiple mafia games and a successful adult-rated TCG that's about to have its 5th set printed.
Feels so strange to know the guy who created that from here; I have a number of friends who enjoy your game.
Iiit's a small world aaafter all...
Anyway, if we're limited to 1, then I'll be working with Blood Brothers.

I am curious to know which adult TCG you made, but seeing it is you I am also quite scared at the same time.
Also I might throw my hat into the ring seeing as I've had a game that's been remade about four times and gone through several different flavors (though I think I hinted about it at the end of GHS Mafia). Hmm... decisions.
Send me PMs!Funny how I've helped work on a mlp card game... but Seppel's game was a little much for me (and I suspect, for my gf). Game mechanics seemed solid though.

It could be because you had already announced that you were working with them, only to announce it again.
I see that you have edited the first post so that this is no longer the case. Why?
As my previous hint was probably too subtle, I would appreciate it if people kept the idle chatter in this thread to a minimum to facilitate readability. Thanks in advance.

I love LoZ, but I have yet to play Majora's Mask!
Who's the second member of your team?
Pretty much this exactly. I'd like to be involved in this, but I don't know how much use I'd be in the setup aspect. Flavor, though, that, I can handle.
PM me if you need someone to write some flavor =)
Not at this time.

Current team: Taredas
Setup could use one or two reviewers/flavor specialists/people to bounce ideas off of; PM me if interested.

<DISCONTINUITY>
<DISCONTINUITY>
Current team: Taredas

It is too late for the pebbles to vote."
It is too late for the pebbles to vote."
Now there are Three separate Majora's Mask mafias.
So uh. Hey guys.
Remember Time Travel Mafia? I'd be happy to pass the concept on to someone who wanted to use it.

I do have a MM mafia setup completed and ready for review (AKA ready to get laughed out of the subforum) — looking for somebody experienced to help me figure out if it's viable, etc., and get it to be playable if it is. PM if interested?
I guess I could do a flavor reskin just so that we don't have three of these in the submissions, but as usual I did the whole thing top down, flavorwise, so that might be hard.
EDIT: Alright, I've got a team.
