I was drafting AVR last night, running G/R aggro +1+1 tokenish pumps (based around 2x falkenrath exterminators, champion of lambholt, 3x timberland guides, pumps, etc) and match 1 I was playing against a 5 color mess of a deck. I stomped him game 1, and he beat me with an unexpected zealous conscripts game 2.
Game 3 I was flooded pretty hard and we were picking away at each other and he started complaining about his mana problems (surprise, you're running 5 color in AVR) and about how he always loses to trash decks and trash players. I ignored him, and after a while he was sitting with 2-3 creatures on board, and I had 4-5 superior creatures and enough on board to alpha strike, but didn't want to overextend my attackers because a: Conscripts, and b: I passed a divine deflection earlier and he had a ton of mana open, and it wasn't worth it to risk it (I was at around 7). So, I swing away for 4 a turn, and he starts ragging on me and saying what a piece of crap player I was and I didn't even know how to play the game, yadda, yadda. Finally, he's at 3 with 1 card in hand, I swing for 4, and he divine deflects it to me for 4. I laugh loudly. He attacks next turn, I block, I swing on my turn, the text box ERUPTS in profanity, he claims he's a pro, and I would never last 2 rounds in a real tournament, and I just laugh and ask him if he's not used to players playing around combat tricks that they know are either in the deck or somewhere in the draft pool, and he concedes. His name was jademage or darkmage or something goofy.
Anyway, I have never really played against anyone this hostile before, do you ever run into completely rude players on MTGO? How do you deal with it? Have you ever reported anybody?
It's the internet. Everyone's a jerk on the internet where they can't be seen. My advice is just to ignore it. if he's not openly messaging you with harassment, just let it go. He'll make a reputation for himself and you'll be the bigger man.

Happens all the time, really. It does suck to lose to someone you perceive as a weaker player. However, people have to have some maturity or whatever. If it was actually darkest_magic, that's MJ and I'm sure he was 100% right about whatever he was saying. However, I would have to see a screenshot, because MJ usually doesn't roll like that.
Whoever it was, they were probably trying to get you to attack into divine deflection (which, by the way, you should never pass).
Pretty sure the name wasn't darkest_magic. This guy had a 5 color deck with a bunch of fairly mana restrictive cards and little fixing, didn't seem like he knew what he was doing at all.
I passed the deflection pack 3 pick 1 for a druid's familiar. I will make that choice 99% of the time. If it popped up earlier or I had more fixing to help splash it, I would have thought it over more.
I know AVR limited isn't that fun, but I'm getting bored with RTR, have a playset of pretty much all the cards I want from it and the card prices are crap for that set right now. I need 2 more restos and 2 more bonfires too, so I've been playing the AVR lottery (I can't bring myself to drop that much $$ on singles). I pulled a temporal mastery and one of the restos so far so I can't complain. Most of the rares are worth a decent amount to make your money back if you only walk away with 2 or 3 packs.
I'm going to say there's no way he's a Pro. I'm sure there are unfortunate exceptions, but in my experience, genuine Pros:
1) Are probably not playing AVR Draft right now. It was widely panned as a terrible Limited set. Pros care about the current draft format and maybe particularly good nostalgic formats, not recently retired bad ones.
2) Even if he was a Pro playing AVR Draft for some reason (maybe spare packs that he didn't want to sell?) then I highly doubt he would be running a 5-color deck.
3) And even if he was Pro playing a 5-color AVR Draft deck months after the format became obsolete -- I highly doubt he would get so upset about it! I'm not a Pro, but even when I play an old format for nostalgia or just to mix things up, I go in thinking "Whatever, this is just for fun, I'll probably lose." A Pro would have better perspective and not get all bent out of shape over 1 meaningless draft with a janky deck.
Sorry you ran into such a jerk. My advice if it ever happens again:
Screenshot it and report the conduct. You'll never know what happens but at least if this person is harassing his opponent in every game and enough people report it, WotC may take action against him.
Kill them with kindness. My response is to always act as if the person is playing a caricature of a ridiculously angry Magic player. Here's an example (spoiler'd just for length):
RTR Draft Finals. My opponent was Rakdos. Game 1 he was on the play. He played Turn 2 Rix Maadi Guildmage, Turn 3 Hellhole Flailer and messaged me...
Good game.
I win.
I ignored that annoying declaration and hoped he would stop messaging. Then after Turn 4 he wrote...
Pls concede, lets go to nxt game
Now I was really annoyed, but remember Kill Them With Kindness, so I wrote back "Haha funny." Gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was joking and didn't actually expect me to concede on Turn 4 at 14 life just because he had a nice opening. Now I could have gone off and said something "Stop being such a dick and just play" but that most likely would have only fueled him to say something back. Because I gave him an unexpected response instead of the response he was hoping for, he didn't know how to reply.
I had Mizzium Mortars for his guildmage. Then I played enough decently sized creatures that we entered a stalemate.
At some point he used Traitorous Instinct on one of my creatures. He went to attack and then realized 1) he didn't have lethal because he spent his mana on Instinct and couldn't throw his Flailer at me post combat, and 2) if he swung with everything, I actually had about 15 power on the board that was stuck in the stalemate, so I could swing back and kill him. He took some time. After a couple of minutes he messaged me...
How should I attack?
He actually went from taunting me on Turn 3 to asking for advice. Since he had already used up any good will, I wrote back "Probably shouldn't attack with anything" with a smiley face.
He did attack correctly in the end but he had already made his fatal error, and I won.
Game 2 he must have kept a marginal hand because he didn't have any Black mana. Probably the type of hand that goes from bad to amazing as soon as you draw a Swamp, and maybe even a decent percentage play, but he was unlucky. I drew pretty well and it wasn't close. Then he pulled one of the most infuriating troll moves...
I'm pretty sure my deck is better. I don't understand how you beat me 2-0 like that.
I wrote back "It's bad karma taunting on Turn 3" and then swung to finish him off. Very satisfying win. But the point of the story is that because I did not reply with anger to his original aggressive messages, it disarmed him and he turned back into a normal person instead of an angry troll.

It would be pretty funny if it was MJ though, wouldn't it?
That's usually been my experience too, the better a player is, usually the more you know, courteous they are, haha. I can get pissed off after multiple floods/screws in a row too, and it does feel even worse when you feel that you're losing to an inferior deck because of pure variance, but usually my only text box comments are something like "boy I love this game sometimes." haha
It would be pretty funny if it was MJ though, wouldn't it?
I doubt it was MJ if you know how much he hates AVR draft haha. Anyways I usually just ignore people like that or put them on my block list if they won't shut up.
I had some scrub at my store yesterday tell me my deck was bad (we were sitting next to each other during construction). It was pretty bad, it was UWR splash 1 augur spree.
I play him in round 3 and beat him 2-0. Now this was a pretty weak draft pool overall, but this guy was the only selesnya drafter and he got stupid stuff like p2p6 collective blessing. I found out afterwards his deck had 10 creatures and 3 ethereal armors.
I guess, you just gotta be able to laugh and shake it off

i hate people who dont have a good reason to be mean.
I had a guy harass me the other day (in a chat box after the game) because I didn't say "gg" when I conceded. T3 Loxodon Smiter, T4 Silverblade Paladin, Rancor... yeah, that's a concede when I don't have my O-Rings or Murders.... aaaaaaaaaaaaand it was a casual game. It slipped my mind to say "nice play" or something, but, seriously, guy? A casual game?
