And that it's not just populated by all Joys and Jennys.
Yes,Yes! Joy and Jenny may appear, but only one of each. Or maybe if their is some creepy clone plot.
New characters, or can we keep the old if we wish?
You can use your old character, or just make a new one, it's up to you. The game itself will be starting over though, so any progress you made (there wasn't much for anybody honestly) is lost.
The old threads will be around until I'm upgraded to mod, so don't worry about losing that info before you can post it in a new thread.
Right now it will be Daftmouse and I, but we would definitely be looking for a third shortly after the game begins.
'perks up ears'
I don't know if I have the time or skill to be a mod, but I can sure as heck be a consultant or help plan or whatever. I am extremely well-versed in Pokemon stuff, from the show to the games. I even followed one of the old incarnations of this game when my friend played it.
:et me know if I can help with this. I like the Pokemon game and want to see it succeed
Daftmouse, I'll PM Nai again, and see if you can be WPL, as well. I'll work on that sub-forum thing as well, I don't have the authority to actually make them.
I noticed that Scyther and Heracross are not forbidden starters. Did you mean to leave them off? because they seem like they'd be too popular and too strong as starters.
I really like the idea of pokemon in different areas having different personalities. (Like the Charmander found in a route filled with Beedrill being agressive). HOWEVER, I think that if a player is a talented enough RPer, they should be able to decide this, not the WPLs. The wild pokemon should be rather neutral and players should be encouraged to give character to their own pokemon. However, if someone is making thier pokemon too one-dimensional, maybe the WPLs could step in.
After reading all those goals and high level career paths, I can see that Makorandy has high hopes for this game. I think we all do. But, we need to have the ability to see this through to its completion. Due to this, and given the way the game is laid out, I have a suggestion. What if all the people currently invested in this game (All ~8 of us) put our minds together over the next few days/weeks etc and laid out Risin, IN ITS ENTIRETY. First, that would make everything very clear. It would give people goals and reasons to keep playing instead of feeling that you are stuck in the first 2 towns forever. I think it is needed to make the game possible. Now, it does create complications. What prevents the starting trainer from going to the "last" city. Well, we need to figure out traveling from route to route. How will it work? I don't think people should just be able to walk from route to route without risk of trainers or wild pokemon. Also, this may limit opportunity, because say there are only 15 towns, then can there be more than 15 gym leaders? I guess we could just make a lot of towns and say that there can be more though.
Edit: A very bored Asauren is creating a map of Risin...lets see how it turns out...But give me ideas if you have any. I should have my rough draft done soon. And no, we don't have to use it, I just think it would be good for the game.
I don't think it should be a problem to make sure people can't get to the more advance cities before they're ready. As the games shows, there are plenty of ways to make sure of that. From requiring HM moves (which I rather we won't use, except for maybe Fly and Surf) to haveing the charecter doing a specific action to move forward, such as obtaining a boat ticket, defeating a specific gym leader, finding a cure for a group of headache-ridden Psyducks blocking the way, etc (ok, we probably shouldn't do the last one exactly). As for the more advance gym leaders, they can just be unavailable until certain events happen, as gym leaders will often be called to do missions for the public good, all within reason. I think even if we laid out the game completely, it still going to be a challenge to complete something like a quest to defeat all gym leaders.
Two problems I can forsee with this are that one, if all of us join together to lay out all of Risin, we (as players) will know too much about the game we're playing (kinda like playing any of the games a second time around). The other problem is the amount of micro management required from the WPL(s) to keep such a full world alive from the get go, with a subforum for each town, and multiple threads for the routes between, it could be messy if we skip the natural growth part where people discover things for themselves as they grow in the game.
Another thing is that I'm pretty sure Makorandy has done some laying out already, with things like the names of the elite four and names like Aster Town already brought yp, I'd say he made some plans, and is keeping them to himself as he should.
Also, and this is for Makorandy to finally decide, but I'd say Phione is definitely a legendary pokemon. It appears in Bulbapedia when you search 'legendary pokemon' and appearantly pokemon.com also defined it as such. And besides, where did you character found a Manaphy and a Ditto to breed it anyway?
I don't think the game would be boring if we all worked together to set it up. We would just know what all the towns are like. We wouldn't all plan everything about the cities, just where they are and routes and things and general things about them (like things that would be on the "first post" ) If you are comparing this to a game, we are just getting a peek at the Town Map (which you get within the first 5 minutes of every pokemon game, correct?). If Makorandy wants to do that, that is fine, but I suggested that others help since it is a big job and he seems to have his hands full already. Also, while WE might know too much about the game, it is a Role playing game for a reason. What you know, and what your character know are different. Also, what if I wanted to make a character that is from Risin? Wouldn't they know all this stuff? Also, this allows for more planning. Wouldn't it be horrible if you spent two months (real time) en route to a city, and that city turned out to be a city focused on pokemon contests while you want to battle gyms? I'm not saying we plan the entire game, just a map. I think that guarantees the success of the game. Also, it wouldn't require too much work because, while we might set up 10-15 towns, no one would visit most of them for a LONG time. Moreover, something like a world map might actually attract people into playing this game. But, it is Makorandy's decision in the end.
While I don't know anything for sure, I think that just because Makorandy knows the name of a town does not mean he laid out the map. Honestly, it takes less than 10 seconds to think up a town name.
About Phione: Well, ok. I wasn't sure though. However, in my opinion, it is not overpowered. If you look at Phione's backstory (you have to navigate my maze of spoilers), I think I gave a pretty good reason for how I got it.
Hey everybody, I'm back from vacation and it was nice. I went to the beach.
Anyway, I better get started...:sigh:
@Asauren:
First of all, Phione is legendary, so you can't have it...ever. Secondly, even if it wasn't legendary or as you say, not overpowered, it is still extremely rare, and a starting trainer would be unable to have it. I'm willing to let your character have a "connection" to Phione in some shape or form, like that it was involved in your past, or it rescued you, but you can't own it. Also, I highly doubt there is more than one anyway (:sneaky: doubt)
Also, don't worry about the overall geography of the game, it is coming together slowly. If your character is looking for a gym, contest hall, stadium, Pokeball foundry, lair of doom, cheese factory, illegal drug farm etc. they should just ask an NPC. They will usually point you in the right direction. If you're spending a large amount of time traveling to a town or city you have no business in, that's your characters own damn fault for not stopping to ask for directions.
Also, as far as geographical "advancement" goes, any character can travel to any city or town they want. You don't have to do the gyms, contest, ot stadiums in any particular order. Gym Leaders have different teams depending on how many badges an opponent has, and the contest have different levels of competition.
So in conclusion, don't worry about the map. Daftmouse, the other WPL, is helping me, and it will be filled out as everyone explores Risin.
@RedDwarfian: Yeah, I'll see if I can get the forums name changed in my next PM to the "higher powers".
If you look through the episode pictures, you will see that there are AT LEAST 3 Phione. However, since the episode guide refers to this event as "the Phione Migration", it seems to be implied that there are in fact many many more Phione. In the game, Phione is considered to be a legendary pokemon only because Manaphy is required to get it, and Manaphy is a legendary pokemon. However, looking over the episode guide and episode pictures, they seem to imply that in the TV show, Phione is just another pokemon. I know Team Rocket desperately wants it, but they desperately want everything. If I recall correctly, Manaphy got a whole movie based around it, just like every other legendary, which, in a way, confirms its legendary status. However, Phione just gets an episode, like pretty much every other pokemon. Honestly, if you look through the episode pictures (and, since I did not see the episode, I could be dead wrong), it seems to imply that Phione is not as legendary or even rare as you are making it seem.
"In the anime, legendary Pokémon are generally held in higher regard than they are in the games, nearing a god-like reverence. Very few people have actually seen legendary Pokémon. Because of their rarity, they are sought after by trainers and collectors, especially by villainous teams like Team Rocket." -Bulbepedia. It might get a ceremony, but it is certainly not treated as god-like. It seems like many people have seen Phione, especially in this town. Ash doesn't seemed to shocked to see one, and it does have a pokedex entry, and he never freaks out and tries to capture it. While Team Rocket does want it, I think if it was legendary, they would have sent more than their failure peons Jesse and James to get one. They would be monitoring the entire "Phione migration"
Also, Bulbepedia does call it legendary if you take it at face value. However, it defines legends as things that fit in one of three characterisitcs
-It is featured in legends (Manaphy is "Prince of the sea", but Phione is not)
-It is a mirage pokemon (The concept of "The Phione Migration" being a regular event makes me doubt this.)
-It is a Pokemon of myth (Phione is one of these, which is why Bulbepedia calls it legendary. But, so are Arcanine, Ninetales, Spiritomb, Absol, Unown, Gyarados, Milotic, Lucario, etc.) I bet you would let me have Growlithe, Vulpix, Unown, Magikarp, Feebas, and maybe even Riolu, so why no Phione?
Lets keep this to one discussion at a time, I'll get back to the map...
EDIT: Also, please read Phione's backstory if you did not. It describes how I got one, and I think it makes sense.
...Well that's extensive :). Alright, well I'll accept that Phione is a Pokemon of myth instead of the same legendary strand as Celebi and company. It will be added to the restricted rare Pokemon list, and you can't start with it. You can, however catch it like any other rare Pokemon.
Also in your back story you can include more than one Phione.
Well, you said with the list of other rare pokemon "There are some of these I would consider giving away, if the player had a very convincing argument or interesting character profile," so I'm not giving up so easily... I'll count this as a victory for now though.
I have based my character around Manaphy, if you hadn't noticed. Honestly, every moment of his life has been devoted to saving Manaphy from whatever evil forces there are, especially the last 5 years. (Note that I left what happened to Manaphy intentionally unclear-even though I did make suggestions-because you have the final say.) If I am going to keep his backstory the same, there are problems with not starting with Phione. Since his life was so centered on Phione, he is not very familiar with other pokemon, which is why he would ask his father to allow him to take a Phione for his new quest. Yes it might be rare, but 15 years of search has to have some result. Given the background of Alex, and especially his father, I think Alex having Phione is perfectly acceptable. I know it is rare, but I think if I have this drawn out of a backstory as to how and why I got one, I should be allowed to start with one(Also, I don't want to rewrite my entire backstory, because I like my character). Furthermore, after these 15 years, he is more or less giving up this phase of his life. Therefore, it would not make as much sense for me to go out and catch Phione at some other time. Also, it wouldn't be as meaningful since it wouldn't be such a link to his past. If I were to get Phione, now would be the most logical time.
Also, it makes Alex more of a dynamic character. He has a constant link to his past instead of being the boring character who is beginning his quest. As a WPL, especially one with a brand new game on his hands, I would think you would want as many interesting characters as you can find. They will add just as much to the game as you will.
You seem to agree that it is not too powerful, and we can always weaken it a bit.
Really, the only reasons I see that you have for me not getting it are
-"It is rare" True, but I have given a full, drawn out story as to why I have one
-"Because you can't" Be careful, to many of these as a starting WPL and your game wont be very popular. Also, it just isnt good enough for me
Also, you don't need to worry about starting a precedent. Since my backstory is so focused on Manaphy and Phione, I don't think another person would be able to do it too. They would have to get their own idea. This one is taken
Alright, Alright. You've done boatloads of research, and have made a very convincing argument. I did say if you make the character interesting, I'll allow it. You must understand though, I don't want to start a precedent. I will allow you to start with a Phione. You obviously are invested and enthusiastic about this game, and that's excellent. Go ahead and post in the laboratory if you wish. If anyone wants to start with a Pokemon outside those allowed, they will have to do as much, or more work than you just did. And that includes pestering me again and again with very well thought out post.
Really? I had so much more arguing left in me too...
Haha, just kidding. Thanks a lot. I can't wait. I'll keep discussion about the map in PM, since it seems keeping it secret will be an important part of the discussion.
So, I've noticed that most of the Pokemon who can learn Fly aren't really large enough to fly an adult around. Pidgey can learn it, for instance, and according to Serebii, Pidgey's a foot tall and weighs four pounds....
Heck, even when you get into the dragons, most of them are about as heavy (and as big) as an adult human (Flygon and Latios are 6'7", Charixard is 5'7" etc). Aerodynamically, it's be rather insane for them to carry a load their same size.
Are we just going to carefully disregard this in-game? Or will flying just not be required for gameplay, such that learning to fly on your Pokemon is more a Contest or 'make-a-cool-character' thing than relevant for game progression?
Just wondering, is all. I know you said my character can ride a Flygon anyway, but I'm curious how this will work for everyone.

As far as HMs like Surf, Fly, and others go, they are really just utility and not necessarily required to access areas of the game. As you say, it is not relevant for game progression. It may make travel a little bit easier, but not having Fly or Surf won't make it impossible.

I haven't watched the anime for a long time. What does a pokemon that swims and has no legs do when no water is around?
I haven't watched the anime in a while either. I believe they just flop around and can't do much. There is technology around that instantly creates puddles for these Pokemon to do on the spot battles though.
Pardon, but this is a slightly old topic. On custom pokemon, it seems to me that it would be good for the game if the WPLs made some new legendary's. I mostly think this because, in my opinion, the only interesting part of legendaries is the local folklore that speaks of them. I would find it a little dumb if Makorandy had to make up new legends about pokemon that already have stories and actually live in other regions.

I'll bet you wish you had a non-unglued/unhinged card that shared your first name.
W may only be paid with white mana. U may only be paid with blue mana. B may only be paid with black mana. R may only be paid with red mana. G may only be paid with green mana. C may only be paid with colorless mana. 1 may be paid with white, blue, black, red, green, or clolorless mana.

Hmm, yes you do have a point there. I did have a storyline in the works that involved one of the older legends, but if people believe this game would benefit from unique legends, I will comply. So anyone who reads this, please voice your opinion!
Could I get an answer to my question in my OOC in the Pokemart thread?
This is a freeform RP. If you want to steal, attempt to steal something.
Ex. : Josh takes some of the fresh fish and sticks them down his pants, being careful that the owner of the store does not see it. He then tries to casually walk out of the fish shop.
Grab it and run, stick it in your buttocks, eat it, try to stab the owner, do whatever you want, just know that the outcomes and success of all your decisions and actions, (be careful not to godmode), are decided by the WPL, who in the Pokemart's case is Daftmouse.

Dry up, O Sea.
Burn out, O Sun.
Grant us power Earthly Leaders and Gatekeepers of Hell.
Guide us Makers of the Underworld.

Hmm, yes you do have a point there. I did have a storyline in the works that involved one of the older legends, but if people believe this game would benefit from unique legends, I will comply. So anyone who reads this, please voice your opinion!
