Given the fact that you can only choose basic evolutions and non-legendary there aren't many you can choose from already.
EDIT: 216 out of 493 by my count less then half. Some pokemon would make sense to be barred, such as the extinct pokemon, but otherwise you should allow all pokemon.
I actually really enjoyed the RP aspect of the game, and am glad to see it's likely staying. As for a selection list for starting pokémon, how is this different from the games (and for that matter, the show)? You had to choose from a select few to start your adventure, why shouldn't this be the same? This way everyone starts off on an even-ish playing field.
Will the starting list be in a similar fashion (certain types only? eg. just fire/water/grass) or will the list encompass all the types from normal to dark and steel?
What about the inherent abilities that started showing up in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (rock head/sturdy/etc.)? Will those factor into anything, or just ignored for the most part?
Also, will money be coming back? I had gotten used to the no-cash system of things, and thought it was actually a great idea as long as it wasn't abused.
I know, but there are some basics that just dont seem right as starters. For example:
Dratini: As a dragon type, I think that is a bit powerful for a new character. Even though it is not the strongest pokemon, dragon pokemon seem to be honored pretty highly and they would probably be really rare in the game. They don't really feel like starting pokemon.
Scyther: Just look at it. It is big and powerful. It is not really what I think of when I think of a starting pokemon.
I guess, however, I should just let people have what they want, shouldn't I
Yeah...but if you count ALL the basics from ALL the regions, you get over 200, which is a LOT.
I have the same question as Yukora, though--what purpose does the limitation have?
Hey, is there anyone else on the forums going to Rice University in Houston? We could ALWAYS use more people in our Magic games. PM me if you want to play sometime
Yes money will be coming back, but pokeballs and potions will still be free.
Abilities will not effect stats, but you can use them for RPing. If you remember, I gave all my pokemon a bio and backstory, if you want your pokemon to be rash or adamant or whatever, they can be, but stats won't be effected.
Also, that reminds me about natures. They will pretty much be the same as in 1.0. Just ignore the nature unless it is very important to the pokemon (ex: Slaking, Shedninja)
Niadar, see above
I'm glad someone agrees with me. Every one should have an even field, however, there would be 50 pokemon instead of 3 to increase diversity between players. However, I am not always going to look to the games for inspiration.
EDIT: I'm drawing a blank for city names. My least favorite part about being a WPL is naming things. If anyone wants to give me some ideas, feel free.
Limiting the pool is fine, but I think you should keep it open to a good reason. Say my character is a headstrong, arrogant, and boisterous individual that grew up on a wheat farm. Suddenly, Scyther makes perfect sense as a starting pokemon.
In my eyes, as long as the rping is there, then characters should be able to start with whatever they want.
...Honestly I think I'm with Video on this one. It'd keep the game a little more balanced if nobody started with Steel-types, Dragon-types, or Ghost-types, or any of those Pokemon that don't evolve. If players do a good job, then their Pokemon will evolve quicker and such...
One change I'd like to see made: I want a better-defined list of what we can find, and where. I much prefer when I can go out and HUNT for a particular Pokemon, rather than having to go throgh hundreds of random battles without even knowing if it's in the area.
Hey, is there anyone else on the forums going to Rice University in Houston? We could ALWAYS use more people in our Magic games. PM me if you want to play sometime
It's more realistic if when we go to an area we can look for a specific pokemon, if you go to a powerplant you can try to avoid all the magnemites floating around while looking for a Electabuzz. Of course you also could just say that there isn't the pokemon we are looking for.

Well, I was going to make a list of pokemon for each route and area. For example, in FL's game, I'm sure if you looked a route 205, you could find about 30 different wild pokemon that appeared there. However, I had no intention of revealing the list to the public. If there is a certain pokemon you want however, maybe if you asked a pokemon professor or a master trainer about it, they could tell you the answer.
I will try to start devising a list, but I'm stil thinking about it.
Also, one key point that everyone should know:
One of the main difference's between FL's World of Pokemon and Nai's World of Pokemon was that in Nai's world of pokemon, finding a wild pokemon was rare, while in FL's version, you could have a full team right away. I am sticking with Nai's method. It will be a while until you have a full team of 6 pokemon. I suggest you not be very picky and take what you get. As in, you shouldn't be focusing so much on getting a specific wild pokemon, just getting a wild pokemon at all.
Some other technical points I thought of last night:
4 attacks known limit, or essentially infinite attacks? Also, how will types factor into them, if at all?
eg: Will Bite be classed as a Dark-type attack, regardless of user? Will generic moves like Tackle, Bite, Scratch, and similar ones be assumed useable to pokemon with the right appendages, with a normal-type attached to the attacks? Will a pokemon with wings be able to use Fly without the HM? What about a swimming pokemon and Surf, Whirlpool, or Waterfall?
Will the level-up system stay the same, with you (and other WPL mods) basically controlling what happens when? Or will levels be figured into things, and when it's time for one to evolve, will it just happen on the spot?
Will characters need to obtain badges to move to the next town, or will it be a free-roaming style?
Will TMs and HMs remain quest-reward items, or will they occasionally be able to be found randomly? What about special items like a pokeflute, ferry tickets, scales/wings, even (god forbid them being popular) game corner coin cases? How could these be obtained, if at all?
Not trying to overload you with stuff, but I think these are valid points and if this thread leads to a basic FAQ then this info should be covered anyway.
I would love to help so here are my thoughts/ideas
-I think it is probably a good idea to limit the starting Pokemon, but you don't have to stop at 50 really. It think eliminating legendaries, evolved Pokemon, and a handful of rares (Absol, Scyther, Jynx, Magmar, etc.) and babies and you have a good pool.
-We should lean towards the anime instead of the game itself, because it probably leads to a better model for an RP game. In other words, we can probably aim for a more fluid world.
-I think it makes more sense if we don't limit the amount of moves to 4...we're not a gameboy game, we won't crash from the loss of memory
-Names...well in the games they all had a sort of theme, like colors. How about...famous leaders? : Napoleon City, Washington Town, Mt.Churchill, Ramses Canyon, Tokugawa Township, Lake Magellan
Mythology Themed? Zodiac City, Gemini Town, Ceres Island
-I don't know if it's too much, but if we're still using the Routes, I think we should be required to travel through them...I mean, we never know what might happen while we're traveling, especially if less Pokemon are showing up nowadays.
-Lastly, while the main goal is of course to get 8 badges/contest ribbons, little diversions like quest, companions or world event-like legendary induced cataclysms are fun as well.
Trainers exist for reasons besides getting gym badges or competing in contests. Tracy, Todd, Professor Oak, Rockets and many other characters are examples. My character will not be interested in doing either... please don't make him.

Ah, I see my wording might have seemed a bit absolutist...I have no qualms with it being like that. My mistake !
I think I just meant my main goal. I'm just asking for some random craziness...
I was in the first run of the WP, but left when things got...well, out of hand. I'd be more than happy to be a co-WPL if you want the help. And I know a lot about Pokemon, trust me on that.

@FL: Yeah, school can do that sometimes. Best of luck with your studies
Had a couple ideas pop into my head name-wise. What about ambiguous names where the gym is not readily apparent on one type, but not a complete mystery?
Ferric City -- high in the mountains, a mining/smelting firm with a town built around it. Leader could use a combination of Rock, Steel and/or Fire pokemon
Hydrangea Harbour -- waterfront cty, famous for hanging gardens and a nearby waterfall, leader could use combo of Water, Grass and/or Flying pokemon
(just to throw ideas out)
I'm just waiting for the right threads to start showing up, and Nico will definitely be returning to 2.0 with an updated backstory. I found the first version fun, and am excited to be part of the starting group for 2.0.
This game is a mixture of the video game and the anime(even though I haven't watched it for about 7 years)
Re Moves: I am going to limit each pokemon to 4 moves, however, a pokemon that doesn't know bite can still bite something. It will be hard to make this make sense but I will try. Any pokemon with fangs for whom it would make sense can bite. USing the attack is more powerful, more prepared and less of a suprise by the pokemon. Maybe it can even have a dark power imbued in it.
Re HMs: A pokemon with wings can fly, clearly. However, I will make it clear if the HM move Fly is nessecary. You do indeed need to HM to use that, and you can't fly from town to town without it.
Side note on TMs: TMs will be RPed as a stone imbued with mythical powers. The power fades once used and it becomes another stone. (They are not CDs!!!) Also, there will be a TM for every single move in this game. If you find a TM for Razor Leaf or Fire Punch or Confuse Ray for example, don't be surprised. There are no lists of what can be learned by what, but if it makes since in your opinion, ask me and we'll see.
Rewards for quests will vary. You can be given a pokemon. You can have an encounter with a rare wild pokemon at the end of your quest. You could learn a move, get a TM, definatly level up, and maybe get rare items.
You will not need badges to continue with the game. However, you wont be able to go everywhere from the start. There will be limits.
Yes, you will have to travel through routes in order to move. If you only want to pass through, you must roll a dice. Something will happened determined by the roll.
Lastly, while the main goal is of course to get 8 badges/contest ribbons, little diversions like quest, companions or world event-like legendary induced cataclysms are fun as well.
Yes yes and yes. All will be encompased. (Oops, forgot contests. Can someone explain to me how they are done in the anime please.)
I am going to try to start by myself for now, but I will be turning to co-WPLs once we reach a certain number. I definatly want them to help with gyms and so I can play the game(Important)
FL: Currently having aim problems. I'm working on it.
The starting pool will be limited. It is at about 70 right now, and I might make a few more cuts. I have also cut some pokemon that I think will be to weak (Babies, Caterpie, etc) also because some of them will be avaliable near the start. If you ask me hard for something like Caterpie, I will probably give it.
Hmmm, I really like the idea of TM's being anything and of rolling dice when you travel from place to place, as well as all the other ideas.
Just the one thing that bothers me is limiting it to 4 moves only. It just seems a bit weird that a Pokemon would literally forget how to do something unless it was just an extremely stupid creature. Would it be possible to make the number unlimited or at least increase it by level? Like gain one move space every 10-15 levels?
I'm also just wondering for the reasoning to keep it at 4. That's my only qualm, everything else is perfect.:D
For now, if you have any ideas for the start of the new game, go for it.
