This is the character generation thread for a re-boot of my Half-Life d20 game. This time, only one player: RedDwarfian. As such, the game will likely be different this time around. The game uses the d20 Modern Core rulebook. Any additional content is provided by me. The game is set in Black Mesa, a secret government research facility in Nevada, in 1997.
Guidelines for making your character: Ability Scores
Players roll 4d6 five times, each time disregarding the lowest die, and assign them as desired for any stat other than Intelligence. For Intelligence, they roll 5d6 and drop the lowest 2 die. Class
Players choose from either Expert or Warrior classes, as explained on this site. Talk to me for more assistance. Spellcaster can't be chosen--magic and FX abilities have no place here. Starting Occupation
Starting Occupations are ignored, since Generic Classes allow a player to choose class skills on their own. Wealth and Reputation
Wealth and Reputation are ignored for the Half-Life Campaign. A good standard of living based on work and needs are provided in Black Mesa, and reputation is naturally developed instead of using a system. Experience and Levels
Characters start the Half-Life Campaign at level 3. They may make any level 3 character they wish, or a multi-classed level 1/1 character. Skills
In addition to the skills a player chooses as class skills, characters choose X of the following Knowledge skills as a class skill, with 1 free rank, where X is their Inelligence bonus: Physical Sciences, Technology, Earth and Life Sciences, or Medicine. All characters have 1 rank in Speak English (Common) and Read/Write English (Common) Feats
Players choose feats from the d20 Modern list, as well as automatically gaining the following feats: Simple Weapons Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, and Armor Proficiency: Special (HEV Suit). In addition, players get an additional feat at 2nd, 5th, 8th, 13th, 16th, and 19th level. These additional feats stack with any bonus feats gained from your class or level advancement. That's right, I want you guys to have a ton of feats.
As for why you're proficient in firearms already---I'll get to that. Equipment
Characters have no wealth; they have personal effects and belongings in their dorm at Sector C Dormitories, as well as plenty of clothes, including one of Black Mesa’s common lab coats. However, each character is well trained in the use of the Mark IV Hazardous EnVironment suit, which has been tailor-made for them and is housed in the Hazard suit lockers in the Sector C Anomalous Materials Personnel area. (See more on the HEV suit below.)
Other than what's listed, we will be generating characters the same way for d20 Modern. Your Allegiance is to the Black Mesa Research Facility.
Keep in mind, it's been nearly 3 years or so since I typed all that up, so bear with me if there's an issue.
I've provided a sample character sheet with everything you'll need to have on your sheet. It doesn't have to look like this.

RedDwarfian, you don't have to play Gordon Freeman if you don't want to, nor do you have to be a mute. This is an adaptation, not an imitation.
Sorry, Halinn. I could potentially put you in there but I want it to run as moothly as possible. Nothing against you, but the more players there are, the slower a game can potentially run. Still, feel free to follow it. If I can figure out an opening for you, I'll see about fitting you in.
Here's the skinny on the Hazard Suit used in the game.
HEV Suit
Communications interface with other HEV suits.
May be used as a free action.
Built-in Geiger counter for detecting radiation.
This is an automatic detection and the counter cannot be shut off. The counter can only be heard by the user.
Built in flashlight (15’ long, 15’ across at its end)
Activated as a free action.
Monitors blood oxygen levels while underwater/in a vacuum.
Provides morphine, antitoxins, and antidotes vs. severe damage, toxins, and poisons. Applies tourniquets to broken bones
Morphine allows characters at 0 HP to act normally for one round before returning to normal at 0 HP. Players at negative HP are healed +1 HP due to morphine.
Antitoxins are administered only due to the toxins of Black Headcrabs; Black Headcrab toxins reduce the user to 1 HP. Antitoxins are administered simultaneously as a free action during the next turn of combat; the user gains +1 of their HD every turn of combat until they are at they are at their maximum HP minus 1.
Antidotes are automatically administered simultaneously as a free action during the next turn, by the beginning of the user’s next turn, the antidote cures the poisons.
Broken bones are automatically protected when broken. It takes one hour for a broken bone to be mended without medical attention.
Without Reactive armor, suit provides minor protection against small arms fire.
A character’s AC while wearing a HEV suit is 14 + Dex bonus + Misc. bonuses. A character gets a +1 bonus to their AC for every 10 Armor Points their armor has.
Nanomachines in suit repair any physical damage to suit. By the end of the round after the suit is damaged, the suit should be finished repairing itself.
Massive amounts of trauma to a non-Reactive Armored HEV suit require more Nanomachine repair than usual; this rule is at the GM’s discretion.
Helmet provides instant tinting for protection against the sun or bright light.
Suit can carry up to:
One melee weapon
Two pistol weapons*
Ten grenade sized weapons*
Five Large sized weapons*
One RPG Launcher
Up to three alien/sci-fi weapons, dependent upon size
*These weapons are carried without visibility; the suit can carry them without evidence.
Suit can carry adequate ammunition for each weapon (dependent upon weapons in campaign)
The ammo is carried within the suit without visibility save for alien ammo or RPG ammo.
Suit has a zoom feature; user can make move actions but never standard actions while zoomed.
Suit zoom gives a +3 bonus to Spot checks, used as a free action.
Reactive Armor and First Aid terminals protect/heal the user.
An HEV suit comes fully charged up to 40 Armor Points Characters track their Armor Points. The HEV suit absorbs two thirds (rounded evenly) of all damage incurred, deducting from Armor Points. When a suit runs out of Armor Points, a character takes damage normally. A character can recharge their suit in two ways:
HEV Battery: Used automatically when acquired, the battery recharges 5 Armor Points.
HEV Armor Station: Mounted on the wall, this station fully recharges a suit. Armor Stations can recharge 40 Armor Points per character in the campaign. (i.e., if there are three characters, a station can recharge up to 120 points.)
Wounded characters can heal themselves two ways:
Black Mesa Medkit: A Black Mesa Medkit is a standard Healer’s Kit with a green injection tube for HEV suits. In the green liquid is thousands of Nanomachines that heal wounds alarmingly fast, for 1d8+1 per the character’s level (i.e., if the character is level 3, the Medkit heals 1d8+3 HP), up to 1d8+10 HP.
First Aid Station: Specifically designed for HEV suits, this wall mounted station injects the same Nanomachines into the suit. First Aid Stations are able to heal a total of HP equal to the total max HP of all characters, or 1 of the character’s HD a round until fully healed. This should be carefully monitored by the GM.
Suit comes in a variety of colors: Orange, green, white, red, blue, and yellow.
NEMP Rifles can disable HEV suits, but only for a little while. The suit’s Nanomachines restore the suit’s energy.
A disabled HEV suit cannot move; its user is paralyzed for two minutes while the suit’s Nanomachines restore power to the suit.
Suit can automatically tell you the direction you’re facing and the time.
This is activated as a free action.
Suit automatically warns you of any electrical, fire, or cold damage.
Communications systems are completely independent of the HEV’s motor systems and thus cannot be disabled by NEMP rifles.
Long Jump Modules allow expansive leaps horizontally.
Long Jump Modules give a +10 to all Jump checks and allow a user to jump twice the normal distance horizontally.
Suits can only be put on or taken off properly inside of a HEV module; most attempts to force the suit off fail. The suit’s Nanomachines repair it long before the suit is damaged enough. The suit comes off easily when its wearer has died.
