"Uhh...I see. I think. Never mind..." Matt obviously didn't exactly believe her story, and she really couldn't blame him. Part of her wanted to blurt everything out, to show him how accomplished a sorceress she really was...but the voice of reason drew her back, keeping her in check. If she was going to tell anyone, she would need it to be someone she explicitly trusts...in a place where no one els could find them. Hell, Alice could tell that Shalin was a witch and even then she stayed mum about the actuality of things for a while.
Having averted that potential crisis, the girl could go back to much more serious matters.
Like how to keep from getting swarmed by every boy (and possibly a few girls) in school. If she had that kind if effect on just one kid...

Anyone looking at her could tell Shalin looked troubled. She simply sat next to Matt for the rest of the trip to class, not wanting to open her mouth. Sure, the delinquent cheerleaders were gone, but now she felt she had a much bigger problem on her hands.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
While the shy and nerdy Matthew may have been able to keep his emotions in check, Shalin quickly found out he was in the minority. Did she want to be someone people noticed? Absolutely. The problem was that she didn't want to be recognized for this...

Today had been, for lack if a better term, a train wreck. Her hair was totally mussed up as she tried to rest, sprawled out on her bed with several horrors consuming her mind.
By 11:30 that morning she had lost count of the number of boys who tried to cop a feel. By noon she'd lost count of the number of boys who had tried to kiss her. (although the especially harrowing encounters came from two girls; Shalin could feel her magical energy on the verge of exploding had she not staved of their advanced)
What she had was a gaggle of people who thought her a goddess. What she wanted were students who would befriend her for reasons other than her swollen chest and thin waistline. What she needed were answers.
Rolling over to her cell phone, the girl punched in a familiar number and waited for the line to pick up, praying the one she was calling could get her through this. someone who didn't care about her physical appearance. Someone she coukd trust with any secret.
"Hey Shalin. It's been a while since you called...what's up?
A relief-filled sigh crossed the girl's lips. Time and again Alice had helped the budding mage understand both herself and her powers. She needed her help one more time...

"Thank goodness you picked up," Shalin breathed a sigh of relief. "Saving the school has had a...let's put it this way, rather inconvenient side effect. My new look has made every single boy in the school have a crush on me. I need a way to get the off me. Any ideas?

"Heh...magic is paradoxical in that regard. Something that is best kept hidden has a way of drawing attention to its users..." while Shalin will concede the point, it really doesn't help her at all. Thankfully Alice provides something in that regard.
"There are actually a couple different ways you can go about this. First, if there's anyone you are interested in, hooking up with him should ward off the others. Football captain is never a bad choice, but somewhat cliche. If you want to dodge the stereotype, go with the place kicker.
"second option is to...well, use magic to undo some of the changes. Frankly this is a real cowardly way out since you don't learn anything from it, but if it's your only option... Shalin seems to give that one some merit, but the little retort makes it that much harder to do.
"The third option I can think of...I mean you have to have some kind of hobby or something you are good at, right? What you really need is a confidence boost. If doing something you love and are good at draws a crowd, use that to your advantage. So come on - what is something you love doing but never was quite good enough at?"
There is one thing that jumps out inthe girl's mind, but she really isn't sure where Alice is going with it...

"Alice, do you mean for me to dance in front of a crowd?" Shalin asked. "I can do that...it's always something I've been good at. Hopefully I'm not too out of practice. If I'm going to practice, I need to do it downstairs. My torrent should be done, so I can practice the very songs I'm going to play." She breathed a deep sigh. "POSSESSION, I'll get you yet," she thought.

"Uh huh...and who are you trying to fool? I'm not a total idiot you know...that sounds like a convenient way to wriggle out of learning anything. If you wanna do that, go it blind or don't go at all - you need to give the impression that it's actually a challenge for you, right?"
While Shalin wasn't trying to weasel her way out of anything, but Alice seemed to imply something even more strange: the girl hadn't done any dancing in more than a month, and Alice wanted her to jump in to one of the hardest setlists she knew, sight unseen? It was madness.
"Look - if you are going to learn something about yourself, you will need to step out of your comfort zone and bite the bullet eventually. So get off the phone, put something hot on, and let yourself go. No point in turning heads otherwise, right?."
She hated to admit it but the girl on the phone had a point. It was if her magic had given her more than just supernatural abilities - it was a way to let Shalin rediscover herself. The difference between who she was and who she wanted to be.
Of course there was the fact that Shalin didn't exactly own anything that flattering - maybe that was just another part of the girl's pep talk - was she too self-conscious with her new appearance? Regardless, she will need something to wear; and if she couldn't think of anything then Alice had to have something in mind...

"You know what, screw it," Shalin thought. "What did you have in mind for me to wear?" She breathed a deep sigh. As difficult as the game has gotten recently, going in after not having played for a month was practically a suicide play, figuratively speaking. If this magic was all it was cracked up to be, though, she wouldn't have to worry...too much. It was still going to be probably the toughest thing she's done yet on a machine.

It wasn't much to go on, but the girl really had little choice. And yet...she had doubts. But it was too late to go back, what was done could not be undone.
The phone dropped from shalin's hand, landing on her bed as a strange but overwhelming aura of bliss consumed the earth Mage, the spell's power dwarfing her own as her skin shivered in a way that made her want to scream in ecstasy. Almost as quickly as it started, the thing finished, leaving the girl panting as a newfound energy surged through her nerves.
Her clothes had been radically altered, trading in the girl's conservative blouse and lengthy skirt for a tight, airy blue shirt with sleeves that just barely covered her shoulders; the garb so form fitting it almost looked as if it had to have been painted on. The navy blue miniskirt was woefully inadequate at covering her lower body, although a pair of similarly colored bike shorts amended that problem. Her hair was up in a ponytail with a ribbon, and white and blue sneakers on her feet.
Shalin wasn't exactly sure what to make of this. On one hand, from looking at her movement in the mirror, the wardrobe gave her a sense of almost otherworldly grace and beauty. On the other hand...it was totally impractical for the weather, and in her own opinion made her look less like a highschooler and more like a stripper.
All the while, the witch herself was somewhat out of it. The lingering traces of the spell had obliterated any thought processes going on at the time, overriding them and sending her into this euphoria-induced daze. Shalin's body was overflowing with energy...but what was she supposed to do with it? She had a bit of difficulty remembering...

Delirious, Shalin stumbled about her room, knocking a pile of CD cases onto the floor. She needed to get rid of this mana overflow, and fast. But she was in so much pain from it. "That's it!" she thought. Alice taught her how to heal. Maybe she could dull the pain of it all magically. Without a second thought, her hands glowed green and white, and she crossed her arms, her hands on the sides of her upper chest.

Shalin didn't have to concentrate for ling before the magic erupted from her fingertips, bolts of magic jumping from her hands into her body, arcing across her skin from point to point with all the order and control as lightning itself. In a fraction of a second, the pain vanished.
But the magic didn't stop. After having numbing her pain, the spell should have ended. The problem, of course, was the skittering arcs of mystical power continuing to jump about, sparking with arcane might, completely out of control. Shalin was horrified, but could barely process it before it was too late. Sparks of her recklessly overpowered spell continued to assault her senses, before her overloaded brain had no other option than to shut down. She couldn't take any more...with a mind numbing wail, the girl collapsed on to the floor in a heap...

When the magician finally opened her eyes, she forced them shut again. Too bright...
Taking a couple seconds to regain her bearings, Shalin finaly sat up and tried to remember what happened. She couldn't remember anything of the past five or six minutes, her last memory was of pain, and her trying to magically alleviate it. After that...black.
She was still in her room, in that rediculous outfit that Alice had emailed her...how exactly did that work, anyway? Regardless, she doesn't feel any pain...but there is something foreign, something...primal. An odd force lurking in her soul, waiting to be released. It would probably be best to try and keep that under control...and she still has somewhere to go.
But where?

Upon rubbing her eyes, Shalin realized she'd only been out for a few minutes - no more than a quarter hour at most. While it was still disheartening...but she couldn't do anything about it. Paper, paper...where was i-oh, there it was.
Shalin knew there was something about a new dance machine...there! A computer engineering major at Rose-Hulman had some kind of new dancing video game that the kid claimed "was more intelligent than any terminal on the market."
Well, the college campus was a 15 minute walk on a good day. And there was a spark of envy in her mind as she read. How could a machine be "intelligent"? What did she have to lose? Besides, she had a secret weapon...

As Shalin kept searching her room for the flash drive, she did some quick stretches in an attempt to loosen up. Surprisingly she felt more alert than normal, almost as if the extra magic had folded itself into her muscles, tensing for a sudden need to break into a dead sprint. Shrugging off the strange thoughts, the mage pocketed the thumb drive as she set off.
The second the witch stepped outside, the wind caressed her body, cutting through the tight-fitting wardrobe and teasing her already sensitive skin. She had to focus...but there was something she couldn't shake. An almost supernatural call...but to what? She didn't know. But Shalin needed to see just what this machine was. Maybe then she could at least channel all this energy somewhere.

A short walk...it sure didn't feel short. Not with this wind, anyway. It wouldn't do her any good if she was already worn out before even taking the floor, would it? She took shelter behind a building twice during her trip to give her hypersensitive skin a rest. Then, a thought entered her mind. She hadn't played a single chart in over a month, and these machines get content patched often. Sightreading charts after not playing in a month...great.
She couldn't think about it any more. She was there. Taking a deep breath, Shalin purchased a couple energy drinks before going to the most likely place the machine would be.

Shalin rolled her eyes at the setup. What kind of bootleg machine is this? she thought. The least the developers could do was make some beta marquee for the machine. Either way, it was time.
