It's okay, Cyan. I'll forgive you when I'm townfirmed a couple Days down the line.

I got out of class early, so now I'm posting from a really fancy MacBook Pro in the Apple section of the bookstore.

I thought about it while reading and rereading Newcomb’s tl;dr, and decided that I’m going to go ahead and give him a light townread and let him do his thing. He’s probably going to be one of the most engaged players in this game, and if he’s scum, I’ll just lynch him later when it becomes obvious. And a smaller thing: I think if Newcomb were scum, he’d be poking at his buddies in scumchat to comment on and possibly push on me for the big back-and-forth we had.
(I am assuming scum have Daychat for the first 72 hours or so of Day 1, with Night-only chat going forward, but it’s not hugely important.)
I don’t have much of a read on Voxx right now, but something tells me he isn’t getting lynched Day 1 ever. Plus, with his supposed meta, letting him scumhunt as either alignment is good for town anyways. He can also be revisited.
(I will say, though: Newcomb’s point on Eco lashing out at a partner is an interesting observation. I don’t know how I feel about it going by the content we have so far, though, both in the world where Newcomb is scum, and the one where Newcomb is town but wrong. Genuine suspicion, or looking to get a mislynch in on his mentor? I know that even if Newcomb is scum and loses, he’ll consider getting Voxx mislynched one of his greatest mafia achievements.)

And then I have a very weak townread on mal for baiting Voxx with his first post. Since Voxx was the one to rip mal and his team to shreds in his first scumgame. Slight possibility of mal and Voxx being teammates, but for now I think not.

I’m tempted to scumread Cyan for being underwhelming, but I remember having that same issue with him in Ace Attorney, so I’ll just leave him be.
Az has posted a lot, but I haven’t really come away from his posts with any particular leaning in my mind. I’ll try again later.
Gun to head, Iso is the scum on the Eco wagon. I know he’s townread me for less, and glazing over me when I’m ~kind of an easy read for him is suspect.
I’ve got nothing on tom. His gimmick is amusing, but that’s about it.
Almost nonexistent-but-still-there townread on Sir Chris for lack of scum theatrics.
Another gun to head, but the way GJ is handling me here comes from town. I think the things he's critiqued me for are fair, though obviously NAI. They don't feel slimy or cheap, or like he's trying to make look bad. Kind of hard to explain, but yeah.
GJ asked me specific things but I decided to thought-dump instead. The non-colored people are listed in order.
@Az: For someone who got so indignant when I suggested you didn't have a compelling reason for voting me, you've sure done a great job of not actually telling us what it is.
In your last few posts, you've defended yourself from Iso/Seppel without really accusing them of being mafia, thrown shade at GJ/Voxx, and poked Vaimes in a "figure you out" type way that could maybe arguably be heading towards a wolf read.
Who would you say is your top wolf read at this moment in time? You have a dayvig that you have to use right now, if you hit town we lose. Go.
I don't really like these kinds of questions because the times when I have a 100% scum read at 150 posts in are very few and far between. Like, I get the point of them, but I'm too conservative to ever bet the farm right out of the gate. To answer your question though, Voxx is my strongest (which is why I'm voting him) so pew pew. If I actually had a compulsory vig shot that didn't lose the game if I missed, I'd actually probably shoot Seppel. Firstly because I think it's completely within his remit as scum to plan to railroad the first person he sees and just brute force a mislynch and a short Day, and secondly because if Seppel flipped scum (or I got confirmed for being a Dayvig) it would force people to get off my wagon and actually do some scumhunting. Basically, his flip would reveal way more information than just shooting an early scum read.
It's not a hard scumread. So far it's been "follow this townread onto a ??? wagon and see if that person only cares about themselves or catching mafia."
And aside from your vote on Voxx, I can't say I see much scumhunting.
I townread you ~fairly easily in Townville, so I'm kind of waiting for that Eco to bring the pain.
It's not a huge surprise you don't see much scumhuting though, since we are only 150 posts in AND I've been forced to spend 100% of the game on the defensive. I really don't like your thought process since it's kind of "vote first, develop scum read later". What do you think of the rest of wagon, or the fact that I hit L-2 so fast?
Having said that, even though you're doing things I'd find objectively scummy, I don't have that underlying feeling that you're actually scum. The same kind of thing happened in Townsville where even though you straight up contradicted yourself I couldn't muster an actual scumread. That same vibe gives me a decent chance that you're Town here as well.
*****
I spent some time today thinking about my wagon and some permutations. As I alluded to above, I absolutely believe MafiaSeppel could hatch a plot to just run down the first person who posts and then just shrug it off on Day 2 and say "Oh well I guess I have to actually start playing properly now". If that's the case, I don't think the other scum would be on the wagon, but they sure wouldn't be trying to stop it either. They'd be dithering/providing points in favour without voting, or even arguing against it (weakly) for the "I told you so cred". That would mean Vaimes/Az/Chris/Iso are clean, and the other scum are in the area of Voxx (for pushing the wagon without voting)/Tom for flip-flopping/Cyan for straight out dismissing. Mal hasn't engaged at all, but I think if it was a scum gambit he'd try to be involved in some way. Newcomb is actually engaging me and GJ is too abrasively exploring other options.
If Seppel is Town, things get murkier. There'd have to be at least one scum on the wagon (out of Vaimes/Az/Chris/Iso I'd order them is descending likelihood something like Az, Chris, Iso, Vaimes). The other one or two are kind of the same above: in support of the wagon, but not directly. There's also more scope for some of the Mafia to just be sitting back and letting the town just stumble into a mislynch, which brings, Mal back onto the table too.
Obviously a lot rests on what Seppel's alignment is, but I can't say I really have much of an idea what that is. He could be doing this as either side, and while I'd really like him to be scum, I'm obviously not coming at that from a non-biased perspective. Overall though, Voxx fits both theories neatly, as does my town read on Newcomb. I'm happy to put GJ in my town pile too. Going to need to see more from both Chris and Mal (obviously). I'd really like Tom to post in not-RP as well (you can do the Shelob stuff as well if you want, I just want more clarity on your thoughts), but I've got a tell I'm looking for later on in the game from him anyway. At least I can try and reverse engineer Seppel's alignment from other flips (or he could, you know, engage with the game properly).
Ah yes, the Chris classic scum tell of not posting. Foiled again.

Why do you think there was no counter wagon from start to L-2 if Eco is wolf? Iso buses, but I don't think he buses that early in a w/w world.
Well, while I have you here, what do you think about Vaimes?
I've got nothing but sympathy and admiration for everything he's posted so far.
Iso busses when the situation calls for it. At L-5, it's not exactly early, nor ordinary circumstances for any of us.
I doubt there was much interest in a counter-wagon, because of how many townies are pushing it. Either the scum sit back and munch popcorn while the town implodes, or they try not to get caught in the same net as their comrade.
I've only loosely skimmed through, but should have an hour or two of time free to dive into this in a bit.
But in the meantime:
Eco, hey, hey Eco.
Let's have a hypothetical situation here. Let's say you are town in a game. It is effectively the first page or two, arguably still RVS. A wagon springs up on someone who acts a little strange. You are amenable to pressure on this person, but have no interest in putting them at l-2 or so one page into the game. Another person also does something that strikes you as being out of character for them, and more indicative of their scum play.
What do you do in this scenario, as your hypothetical town self?
1) Do you vote for the person that already has a wagon on them, but very little explanation for any of the votes to respond to.
or
2) Do you vote for the secondary target that is pinging you in order to apply pressure and try to figure out their alignment.
Newcomb is probably town. With mild reservations. No interest in lynching currently.
Vaimes is probably town. With less reservations.
The way I tend to usually read Vaimes is to look for minor things that I don't think he'd even think of, as scum.
Quote from Vaimes »
Almost nonexistent-but-still-there townread on Sir Chris for lack of scum theatrics.
Here is one example of that. It's minor, but it's indicative of Vaimes trying to get a read on Chris, and looking for specific things, and not finding them. I don't think he takes the 'scum theatrics' line as scum.
I have a healthy dose of skepticsm for Mal's 'it wuz a trap' thing. Will read through his posts more when I have actual time in a bit.
Az is pinging me, and not in a good way. I'm not seeing the confidence, the inquisitiveness, the desire to figure things out that I've seen from Town!Az, I'm seeing someone going through the motions, and that's been far more indicative of scum!Az.
Although to be fair there's been very little passion or fire from anyone yet. People aren't invested, and that includes quite a lot of town.
Chris, hey Chris. I get that you're probably busy. I'm not expecting the activity from the Chris of old, it'd be pretty damn hypocritical of me given how busy I also am. But while I agree lack of activity is not a scum tell for you, the lack of giving any *****s is kind of. Not a town tell, either.
Talk to me more. Tell me about Az, tell me about Seppel, tell me about Iso. Also tell me about the two people I asked you about earlier.
Sorry that was probably at least partially uncalled for. The sentiment stands but I could have been less harsh. Walked home in the rain, and I'm cold, wet, tired, and hungry, and trying to translate gibberish, and then try to figure out if you'd make that gibberish as town or scum is making me even more irritable.
Anyway, they started the wagon, why should I take issue with it?
OK, but why are the votes that started the wagon the ONLY ones that matter? Why is Az a wagon starter but Vaimes is not, given that Vaimes voted me before Az did? Do you have any kind of independent read on me, or are you happy to just follow the votes of others for now?
That's a silly question. Az and Seppel are the ones that picked up the wagon and ran with it. Vaimes wouldn't be busing you out of the gate, and if he were, he wouldn't have let it go on this wrong.
okay so I actually read the thread now albeit backwards and I'm going to bed after I make this post.
So I'm down with the Eco wagon, it feels right and neither Az nor Seppel have given me bad vibes. Not moving that vote.
GJ's opening seemed uh, out of place? I'm not really sure how to describe it other than a gut feeling since he hasn't posted since.
I like that mal's opening was deliberate, that it prickled Voxxicus accordingly, and that he responded to it. We have half of this game cleared, already.
I'd really appreciate if tom dropped the posting gimmick, but whatever. I'm sure his votes will reveal his true face. (Is there a Lolth card in Hearthstone?)
I sort of glazed over Vaimes & Newcomb's exchange. I'll sort them out with wagon analysis, as well.
So that just leaves:
Vaimes
Newcomb
Cyan
Chris
tom
GJ
and I don't think Cyan has posted, yet, of those six.
-
@Chris: Let's tango. Tell me about your opening post. Should I be townreading you for it?
Yeah the thing is I kinda /agree/ with most of that? And not everyone has the same drive/engagement/desire or feels the same paranoia or level of wanting to solve or whatever but I'm sitting here thinking "man if it's not like Eco/Voxx/GJ we're kinda not playing a great game right now." I'm specifically thinking of GoldenEye here, which I read preeeeetty closely? In which Iso had a very specific idea about what the gamestate was, but pushed it in a way that felt much more visceral, like there were stakes.
Uhm, I ran GoldenEye Mafia?

Like... yeah even for someone who's completely content with the D1 wagon and the people on it, that's a pretty stunning lack of feeling or engagement.
Yeah, for once, I don't have to do all the work. It's nice to be able to chill in a game, for once.
I'm alarmed at the lack of anything, tbh. Is this mafia, or a slumber party where everyone is too old and tired to actually play the party games?
im 12
I dunno, I feel like the Eco lynch is a slam dunk, and we have a good secondary lead off of the above GJ post.
GJ/Iso prooooobably not w/w for this? Although, lol, in the world where Eco's mafia I could almost see this as a "hit the panic button" distance if it's actually Eco/Iso/GJ. That's at the level of "passing fancy" though.
Nah, I've been powerwolfing pretty hard as of late.
Also, the fact that there's not really a lot of push in another direction is probably a good indicator that the Cyan slot is scum.
That's kind of a town thought to have, I think?
Although I kind of want to ask you, Iso, /exactly/ what you meant by it? Because reading it again now I actually think you could mean it in a few ways.
Sure.
So, as I mentioned, I don't have any qualms with anyone on the Eco wagon. GJ is sort of half-assedly lashing out at the Eco wagon but there's no spirit there. He's obviously Eco's buddy, and in the interaction where Eco calls him out on the lack of counterpush, here, you can read the frustration in Eco's words - it very much reads like a scumbuddy angry with another scumbuddy for letting his wagon go on for so long, and not doing anything about it. So that's where that's coming from.
Now, let's look at the other players not jumping on the Eco wagon. Of them, we have:
Chris
Cyan
tom
Vaimes
Newcomb
I've unilaterally decided that Chris is town. Unrelatedly, he had the chance to push elsewhere, and he would either have done so or bused Eco into hell if he were scum.
You and Vaimes, I mentioned, I was sorting out later. That said, I like both of your recent big posts. I'm content to call you town for the time being.
So that leaves tom and Cyan.
tom feels like a fish out of water. tom expressed his surprise at getting voted into this game and he's coping with it as best as he can with his spider gimmick. But he feels more confused about the gamestate than anything, and I get a solve-y mindset from his posts.
That just leaves Cyan.
Cyan wasn't posting at this time, and Cyan is the last person who could possibly be pushing in a direction opposite to Eco. (Which he then did like clockwork, bravo scumCyan.) This indicated to me that Cyan's slot was extremely likely to be scum in this scenario, simply from the lack of momentum in other directions.
Page 1: Vaimes and Newcome both come across to me as thoroughly scummy. Their interactions reek of being same alignment, and not in a town way. The Eco wagon seems like much ado about nothing.
Page 2: Seppel explains his reasoning for initially voting Eco, which I find to be dubious at best. If it were anyone other than Seppel, I'd probably be voting here. But I've been burned on that too many times to count, so I'll wait and see what happens. Iso's summary post feels pretty townie, even if I disagree with him re: Seppel. Vaimes continues to get worse. He's maintained a scum read on newcombe for 2 pages(without voting him from what I can tell), but then hops onto the most popular wagon around instead, with no meaningful explanation for his change of heart.
Vote Vaimes
Please explain to me how you believe that Vaimes x Newcomb is scum theater with a breakdown of their posts indicating your reasons why. Also, since when have you ever had reservations about voting Seppel?
Page 2: Seppel explains his reasoning for initially voting Eco, which I find to be dubious at best. If it were anyone other than Seppel, I'd probably be voting here. But I've been burned on that too many times to count, so I'll wait and see what happens.
Wow GROSS.
1) When have you EVER agreed on a read of mine and followed along? Burned too many times? BS. ("But but Seppel I was talking about in general not you, honest!!")
2) "I'll wait and see what happens." Gag me with a spoon and crown me Miss Universe.
Eco wagon is pretty trashy, Iso pretty much proves he can only actually read me for ***** when he rolls scum (and then waffles on it day 2). Crap, gave away Iso scum tell.
Unvote, Vote Azrael.
tom is lean town. Going past the roleplay, he seems more interactive than anyone here, and cares about interactions.
MT feels really low impact from the one game I remember he was town in (I think it was Dota's grid something)
Newcomb can also be town. I know, I know effort =/= town, but when no one else is doing anything, well....you get the idea. I just picture the state of the game, and the team being tom/Newcomb/X probably means we just get destroyed by apathy.
Aren't you the one always shouting that you hate Day 1's? This is a surprising amount of solidified reads from you for a Day 1. GJ for lockscum.
Azrael has the second worst vote, and does not feel like he cares. I don't like his "loose but feels right comment".
MT still doesn't feel like townMT. ScumMT in my expirence is much slankier where townMT is kicking the **** out of the slankers.
Gg ez.
What don't you like about it? Compare/contrast Azrael's treatment of Eco to Iso's?
Iso not asking for a claim when knowingly moving someone to L-2 is pretty telling. I don't think I have ever recalled scum Iso making a shove like that. Azrael just did a weak barn of the post, made a comment about how he didn't like it, but felt right and it felt really fake. Like, his tone isn't slow down, let's think about this: it's "shove, shove, shove" knowing that he won't be the main party to catch flak for this.
Didn't you just call me town? Also, Eco knows he's at L-2. My vote is easily the laziest on Eco's wagon. In the event that Eco actually flips town, I'm going to be the first person scrutinized for it. This basically means one of two things:
1. I can't be scum voting townEco because I would never intentionally make myself look so awful knowing full well that that would be the course of events that played out after the flip.
2. If Eco is town, I'm town - but if I'm scum, so is he.
Iso's post strikes me as possible scum bussing Eco, while setting up a mislynch (you) for Day 2 to make up for the bad D1. Of the five voting explanations against Eco, Iso's is the most suspicious for either a scum bandwagon if Eco is surprise town, or a scum bus, if he's isn't. Several magnitudes higher in concern/reliability for me than the post I poked you for.
Nah, bro. Check my powerwolfing meta over the past few games where I've attempted to drag my entire team, kicking and screaming, across the finish line, alive. This isn't a bus by any stretch of the imagination.

My tone isn't pushing "slow-down" because there is no way we're going to push him off the edge without it being debated to death, or without my personally unvoting to make sure we do push it to death. And if anyone had hopped on the wagon after that comment, I'd have loved to analyze that.
Pushing phantom fears, there. But why? Hmm. Decent possibility you just misread the situation, in conjunction with your initial post regarding speed, felt the thread was getting out of hand too quick. Reflexive response. Scum not likely to soft pedal the wagon, as Iso is suggesting that you did. Not credible theory on Iso's part.
Still Iso/Vox/Eco I think.
And your explanation for Eco lashing out at GJ for not pushing a counterwagon?

If you want to dick around in random games go for it, but show some respect to the people who actually want to play mafia rather than charades.
I'm enjoying it and find it to be quite expressive and illuminating, actually. It's also quite easy to hide behind, though. *reaches for a rolled up newspaper*
@Iso-It's not impossible, but it just seems waaaay too straightforward and transparent of a line of play. I'd expect scum to play that much more subtly than to get mad at a buddy publicly for failing to help him. And I think it makes perfect sense for
Eco to be slightly irate regardless of alignment, and for GJ to be alarmed at wagon speed regardless of alignment.
@Eco-My reasoning for the vote is identical to Seps and Vox's stated reasons, unsurprisingly.
1. I can't be scum voting townEco because I would never intentionally make myself look so awful knowing full well that that would be the course of events that played out after the flip.
2. If Eco is town, I'm town - but if I'm scum, so is he.

I'd say it's a pretty strong indicator the scum don't have Daytalk.

I think I'd probably say something like "Eco looks scummy and I am amenable to pressure on this person but I do not wish to place him at L-2". Not produce both a tell and precedent for people to use while maintaining distance from the wagon. How has the pressure of the wagon informed your read on me? Do you want to vote me?
@Eco-My reasoning for the vote is identical to Seps and Vox's stated reasons, unsurprisingly.
Not only is it unsurprising, but it also means the number of people with a good reason to be voting me is staying resolutely at zero. I don't understand why so many people are content to just take the easy path of "herp derp let's RVS wagon Eco no brakes" instead of trying to hunt scum to get a lynch that isn't awful.
Tell me your input on my analysis of the momentum of your wagon with regards to Cyan's role in this, specifically. I also couldn't help but notice that you and Cyan haven't interacted yet all game, and we're almost 200 posts in. You both have only passively mentioned each other, at best. What gives? Solidified town reads? Ok 1: It's post 180. This is the most volitile time for town reads, but yes I have some inklings and 2: If you made that statement 4 months ago, you would have been correct. My day 1 has vastly improved since then. Or, if you are going to go for ancientGJ scum tells, tell me why I am not bussing the ***** out of "scumEco".
Or, you are just as bad as Cyan in AA where you only tend to read into the conclusions that support your theory and ignore the ones that contradict it.
Well, now you're making me doubt myself and musing about Iso double-bus, with all the misrep you're throwing here. I fully expect to steal all the credit for reading Eco correctly, one way or another, good or ill. I don't think I *ever* avoid credit for wagons I push, because I invariably don't shut up about them. So that theory seems...wrong-headed.
I think it would be safe to say if Eco flips town, you would not be in the spotlight. If the day were to end now with a plurality lynch, Eco flips town, I probably look at Vaimes/you/Iso for votes. From my perspective, your "feels wrong but right" felt like a distance attempt.
I think it bothers me that no one wants to unvote at this stage, but no one is suggesting pushing forward. It's not like moving Eco to L-3 is going to magically dissipate a wagon.

Note that in that very same post, Iso was boasting about powerwolfing.
Yes Seppel, I was mocking the person who pointed to my lack of posting as something scummy out of me. Migraines are a scum tell as old as time.
Admittedly I voted for Eco for giggles and to see where it led, I just haven't had the chance to follow up on where it led. We shall see if I can fit in a good read this afternoon.

4 months of games on MU is a super large amount of games. And two day 1 lynches on my slot is a sure fire way to get me to fix my day 1. Difference between MU and MTGS.
One was. The other was an SK where I played pretty much identical to my town game because I was a newbie in a game with a bunch of pros, so the odds of drawing a nk were super low.
What I learned at MU: I am a top tier town player in every sense of the word and I need to work on my scum game a bit.

Not only is it unsurprising, but it also means the number of people with a good reason to be voting me is staying resolutely at zero. Eh it is funny a lot of people give me flak for being arrogant but in my 15 years of playing mafia I got to where I am at by being brutal on myself for my errors and always looking for ways to be wrong.
I self-deprecate a lot, but doing so in a mafia game is pretty pointless since the point is to be a force and be a change agent.

Oh, absolutely, I think a great many talented people get to where they are by being their own harshest critics. But sometimes, they also have this urge or desire for people to appreciate the very unusual results that they've generated, commensurate with their perceived skill. And there, I think, is where people can get into a heap of trouble. Better to just avoid self-congratulation, I think.
You are pretty incredible though, seriously. Glad to have you here. Hopefully on the right side this time.
No time for congratulations there are scum to catch!
But thanks, it is appreciated. I don't have a town lean on you yet or anything (to call it a lean would be a bit misleading) but you're alright for now. This Eco stuff should be fun when I actually read the thread.

Be back tonight.
Eco town = almost certainly at least one in Iso/Chris?

Vaimes is probably town. With less reservations.
The way I tend to usually read Vaimes is to look for minor things that I don't think he'd even think of, as scum.
Here is one example of that. It's minor, but it's indicative of Vaimes trying to get a read on Chris, and looking for specific things, and not finding them. I don't think he takes the 'scum theatrics' line as scum.
My patience for dealing with his shtick is approximately zero.
If you want to dick around in random games go for it, but show some respect to the people who actually want to play mafia rather than charades.
Still shouldn't have lashed out.
*drops down from the ceiling on a thread*
*looks around waiting for someone to swat at him*
Get on my level.
That's a silly question. Az and Seppel are the ones that picked up the wagon and ran with it. Vaimes wouldn't be busing you out of the gate, and if he were, he wouldn't have let it go on this wrong.
Uhm, I ran GoldenEye Mafia?
Yeah, for once, I don't have to do all the work. It's nice to be able to chill in a game, for once.
Make sense?
hello yes this is Iso
how may I help you
Please explain to me how you believe that Vaimes x Newcomb is scum theater with a breakdown of their posts indicating your reasons why. Also, since when have you ever had reservations about voting Seppel?
+1
Aren't you the one always shouting that you hate Day 1's? This is a surprising amount of solidified reads from you for a Day 1. GJ for lockscum.
Same! Or a GJ wagon.
Those are our three scum, ladies and gentlemen.
I like that this completely ignores that I actually thought your opening post was a little off, but thanks for cherrypicking.
Put your money where your mouth is.
Nah, bro. Check my powerwolfing meta over the past few games where I've attempted to drag my entire team, kicking and screaming, across the finish line, alive. This isn't a bus by any stretch of the imagination.
So, you think Eco's town, here?
And your explanation for Eco lashing out at GJ for not pushing a counterwagon?
Nah, Az is town. You're barking up the wrong tree.

Yeah, I think your scum game is just fine, from what I remember...

But thanks, it is appreciated. I don't have a town lean on you yet or anything (to call it a lean would be a bit misleading) but you're alright for now. This Eco stuff should be fun when I actually read the thread.

@Iso: derp, I meant Murders in Townville, not GoldenEye. The ZDS game.
