A figure walks silently up a spiral staircase made of... something. (Ice? Iron? Ideas? You can't tell.) Voices echo after him...
"There is a hole in your mind."
"So long as one human exists, it will be proof that humanity once existed."
"No one here is exactly what he or she appears."
"Tekele-li! Tekele-li!"
"You lied to your friends and betrayed the mercenaries who fought for you! What's happenin' to you, Arthas?"
"I have seen the world under your hand and it contained more sadness and pain than this age. Are you prepared to return to another age of your failures?"
Then the figure stops in front of... something. Something strange, alien, inhuman.
"Return the blade... complete the circle..."
<DISCONTINUITY>
Game State: Day 11 Deadline: August 11, 2016 at ~6:00 P.M. GMT -6
If no information ever escapes from you, how can you communicate?
If a small example of your kind will evaporate into nothingness, why are you still around?
If your gravitational pull is so strong that even photons cannot escape, why are your surroundings unaffected?
And just what the hell is a celestial body doing on a planetary surface, anyways?
These and many more questions have their answers in a shadow realm, a parallel reality we like to call... Mind Screw.
Welcome to Mind Screw Mafia 5, PLAYERNAME. You are a Black Hole (from Real Life), a consequence of General Relativity that has been confusing physicists for many decades now. You're not so much a new arrival to this mindfrak realm as a permanent resident; why you haven't consumed the entire place is a mystery. Then again, so is your apparent sentience and ability to communicate. It's probably better not to ask. Better yet, why not help deal with the current situation so that you can go back to being a black hole in peace?
You are a Townie Temporal Mystery. You have the following special abilities:
Passive Abilities: Mystery Ability – You're not sure exactly what this does, but you are sure it's a very powerful ability. Accretion Disk (triggered) – At the beginning of Day 4, you will learn an important piece of information about the setup. If you are killed before this ability triggers, instead at the time of your death you will be prompted to choose a player who will receive this information in your stead. Kill Method – Your kill method is “breached the event horizon”.
Active Abilities (use at most 1 per game cycle): Schwartzschild Radius (1-shot, Rapid Action) - Once during the game, at any time during the first game cycle (but not after the beginning of Day 2), you may target a player other than yourself. That player will gain the abilities Decaying Orbit("One game cycle after you gain this ability, if you still have this ability, you will die, and nothing can prevent this") and Liberate Tutemet Ex Infernis("Each night, you may target a player other than a player who has ever had this ability. If this ability resolves, you will lose your Decaying Orbit and Liberate Tutemet Ex Infernis abilities and that player will gain those abilities. A list of legal targets for this ability will be provided upon request."). You are never considered a legal target for the Liberate Tutemet Ex Infernis ability.
Win Condition (Town): You win when all other factions have left the game and at least one member of your faction survives.
Please confirm via return PM.
Rules:
<-1> I am the Mod. If a dispute arises, my decision is final. That said, I am not infallible - if I make a mistake or you have a question, please inform me of the problem (preferably via PM or bold text) and I will correct it.
<-1a> Like captains, Mods must value certainty over correctness in a pinch. If you disagree with a mod decision and I have indicated the decision is final, please keep your disagreements to yourself until the game is over. This makes my life easier, and gives everyone involved time to cool off. NOTE: Failure to abide by this may result in modkill. You have been warned.
<1> This is a game. I hope that you have fun. In return, I ask that you not have your fun at the expense of the other players in this game (in other words, don't be a jackass). Repeated or extreme violations of this rule will result in replacement or modkill.
<1a> Attempting to use loopholes in the rules to gain an advantage in the game is considered jackassery, and will be treated as such. This applies to things like encrypted codes, invisible text, editing and deleting posts, trying to use the structure of the role PM to gain an advantage, etc. Please, use your common sense!
<2> If there is a conflict between a role and the rules, the role wins.
<3> Do not edit your posts, on pain of modkill.
<4> Quoting private communications (role PM, mason conversations, etc.) or pretending to do the same will result in a modkill. Paraphrasing, however, is not only acceptable but encouraged unless I explicitly say otherwise.
<4a> If your English/other native language teacher would call it plagiarism, it's not a paraphrase. (This elaborative rule added 4/27/2009 to clarify Rule 4.)
<5> You may not talk with other people about this game outside of the thread (but see Rule 2).
<6> This game will have a vote count but will have no FoS count.
<6a> In a Normal game, the FoS count will have no effect on the game other than breaking voting ties at deadline. Theme games make no such guarantee.
<7> To help the game run smoothly, votes and FoS'es should be made in bold text, and use the format Vote: XXXX or FoS: XXX respectively. Unvoting/unFoSing is not required but is appreciated..
<8> If a player has a majority of votes, that player is lynched and cannot be unvoted. You may talk during twilight unless I state otherwise.
<9> The first game Day will begin with a deadline of three (3) weeks. Subsequent Days will begin with a deadline of two (2) weeks.
<10> If deadline occurs without a full majority and a majority of voting players are voting for a player, that player will be lynched. Otherwise, No Lynch will occur.
<11> You may elect to No Lynch any number of times during the course of the game. In order to No Lynch, one of the two following conditions must be met: either a majority of living players must vote no lynch, or no player receives a majority of votes from voting players before deadline. (To vote No Lynch, please use the format Vote: No Lynch. FoS'es for No Lynch will not be counted.)
<12> Don't drink and post, lest ye receive Public Humilitation. (This rule is an injoke and doesn't actually do anything.)
<13> After Day ends (with the exception of Day 0, which leads directly into Day 1), the game will enter Night. Night will last 72 real-life hours unless otherwise indicated. Do not post during Night, upon pain of modkill (though I'll be lenient if it's clearly an accident).
<14> When you die, stop posting. You may make a single "Bah!"/"Frak you!"/etc. post in the thread. You may not include game content in this post. In addition, once you are dead, please do not discuss the game with anyone other than the Mod until the game is over, as this makes the mod's life easier.
<14b> Dead players may or may not be granted access to the spectator thread after death. If such access is granted, dead players may discuss the game in that thread only.
<15> All players need to post at least once every 72 hours, or inform me if this is not possible. If you do not post for 72 hours, you will be prodded. If you are prodded, then you will need to post something (a simple "/prodded" will suffice if you're short on time) within 72 hours or you will be replaced. You will receive an Strike the second time you fail to post for more than 72 hours. The third time you fail to post for 72 hours, you will be replaced.
<15a> If you have limited access, you need to post to this effect in the thread. If I prod you despite you declaring V/LA status, call me on it and I will be duly embarrassed.
<15b> If you post before I get around to handing out the prod, you avoid the prod.
<16> Players may only use one special ability per day/night cycle (but see Rule 23). Passive abilities and factional abilities are not counted as special abilities for purposes of this rule; any activated abilities inherent to a faction, however, count normally
<17> This game will start on Day 1 after all players have confirmed (by the method specified in their role PM).
<18> Any player who is modkilled automatically loses the game. I will modkill in the fashion that I deem most damaging to the modkilled player's faction.
<19> I reserve the right to add rules if necessary (or if I really, really want to).
<20> Okay, that's enough formal-sounding stuff. Good luck, have fun!
Game-Specific Rules:
<21> Whenever a player makes a post that breaks a minor rule, that player will receive a Foul.
<22> Whenever a player makes a post that breaks a major rule that is not punishable by modkill, that player will receive a Strike. A player who accrues three Strikes will be forcibly replaced.
<23> Whenever a player is killed, that player’s name, point of origin, role, role type, and alignment will be revealed.
<23a> Town-aligned players will be shown in green in the first post. Other factions have associated colors of their own.
<24> This game uses Umineko-style colored text. Blue text denotes statements that are provisionally true until refuted; in the context of the game, this means it should be used to ask questions to the mod. Red text is reserved for the use of the moderator (but see Rule 2); it is true unless overridden by gold text. Use of red text by an unauthorized player will result in a modkill.
<25> This game will start on Day 2 after all players have confirmed. This overrides Rule 17.

Taredas' house is a wreck now. Nobody wants to buy it, nobody wants to visit it. Occasionally a group of rowdy kids would dare each other to go inside. Invariably, nobody saw them again. People say it was haunted by ghosts. The truth, as it always seems to be, is worse.
I'm sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. Charles Palanick. I'm a real estate agent. Haunted houses are a real estate agent's dream. Nobody wants to claim them, for rather obvious reasons, so often they're picked up cheap after estates are closed. The rumors are natural, of course, with old houses. Fortunately, people move here all the time, and the housing market is so closed, anyone will buy the house for top dollar. It's a great market, especially with people too lazy to check newspapers to learn who was murdered in their houses. But I digress...
The old man in the corner took another sip from his beer and paused, looking for the right word. The bar's small population had turned its attention onto him for the moment. It was less a validation of what he had to say and more a digression from their meager lives. The man sighed, stared away for a moment, then returned.
It's a beautiful mansion... elegant stairways, numerous bedrooms, an olympic swimming pool. The works. But, as they say, blood always tarnishes elegance.
He laughed, almost menacingly. The Telltale Heart wasn't a horror story, we say in the business, but rather a foolish buyer.
Thump thump. He laughed again. The bar was dead silent.
I remember it clearly. It was Taredas' birthday. While many people eventually give up on celebrating their birthdays, Taredas wanted to make up for lost time. Whether he was nostalgic or simply lonely, nobody knew. But I do know - from secondhand, mind you - excuse me, thirdhand - experience that Taredas was getting on in years. Rumor had it he was ready to give away his money. Last rites, you know.
Everyone knew he was rich. And money can attract the most... unfortunate of characters. After all, businessmen always have their enemies, but rumor was that Taredas had cut a few deals too shady, and the Greenwood Mafia wasn't pleased about the ways he had gone about his business. Many people were just waiting for him to die. Perhaps he was counting on it.
What I do know, however, from newspapers, is that several of the invitees mysteriously died days before the party. Their invitations were gone.
The old man paused again. But hey, what do I know? I'm a real estate agent.
All I know is that, after that party, nobody went anywhere that house. Taredas was gone. The people at that party were gone - either dead, or in Monaco, for all I know, playing blackjack at a hundred a hand. And the world, as is its nature, moved on.
And as for the house, well... the place decayed. People visited, at first - people wanted to know what happened that night - but eventually, they were gone too. Everything... everyone was gone, save for the house. And as it sat there, unwanted, the legend only grew; after all, everyone loves a good ghost story.
I've only been there once - had to get the rights to sell it. What I saw there... man, if I had ethics and morals and worthless junk like that, I'd have backed out right there. The place was a wreck - broken furniture, smashed windows... and the blood, covered by fresh paint, was still visible, a red blotch that wanted to tell its own story, as I am telling you mine. On the walls, on the ceilings, and in deep pools on the floors.
But hey, what do I know? The man took another drink. The bar at this point was entirely focused on him, hanging on the words.
But the worst part was, when the lights went off, the place was silent as the grave. Except, you could hear it... radiating from the walls. A sound to drive men mad. Like the pulse of a long-dead but unforgotten heart.
Thump. Thump. The man started laughing maniacally, until he finally silenced himself with a long drink from his beer. He then turned back to his audience, and smiled the smile of a narrator who knows the twist around the bend.
The material of a good ghost story, indeed.
Welcome, my friends, to my home. Make yourselves comfortable, and feel free to have some of the food over there and enjoy the evening's entertainment.

You know that anything the Mod posts in red text is true, and that players may not use red text unless an ability says otherwise (it is strongly advised that you heed this warning!). Additionally, you know that questions to the moderator should be phrased in the form of statements using blue text, that blue text can be considered true unless contradicted by red text, and that blue text should not be used for any purposes other than asking the Mod questions unless an ability explicitly says otherwise.

The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
The Zeroth Vote Count (aka the "Apologies to EtR" Vote Count)
I'm gonna start with a partial claim. I choose a number at the beginning of each day. My role pm specifically says I don't know what it does.
No idea if this is useful information
KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.

Nothing like kicking off things with Umineko-branded mind-screwiness, isn't there.
Vote: Taredas FoS: Ghosting
By the way, just a general announcement: Previous Mind Screw games (2 and 3) have included the ability Death Note, which allows someone to name a player and a ability name. If they match, then that player dies. If/when we reach claim time, do not claim ability name.

If there isn't a legit interest, I would at least like no more psuedo claiming unless you are a day vig. I will end the day by post 1,000. Without breaking any rules of the forum, I will force you all in a situation. I am a firm believer of LAL, so don't even try.
@tapping do you want to do that thing we do every game where i attack you, you get mad, and then im certain of your alignment?

yeah, this is the biggest problem i see with switching up my style. getting people mad via mild flaming has done some really good work for me in determining their alignments. you most of all.
my reads have been pretty damn good in my mafia career (except wildfire), its the living past Day 2 thing ive been crappy at.
i think it probably makes hans town? ending the Day without getting a Night doesnt really seem like a scum thing...
on the other hand, we are being mind screwed so who ******* knows.
im inclined to believe hans here, and im not seeing the scum motivation for putting himself out there like that. its not like anyone would be shocked by lurking/regular hans.

No, I'm wondering how he knew there wouldn't be a night. He said that he was responsible for ending the day. Not that he was responsible for skipping the night. If he has the ability to end the day at anytime shouldn't he save that as some kind of one time governor ability?
I'm not saying it's scum motivated, I'm just pretty confused with the set-up at this point.
i think this is probably the worst possible game to try to figure out based on setup.
what we should actually take from that is its a thing that happened, and someone claimed responsibility for it.
it seems too risky to be a fake claim, as anyone saying "nope. that was me" would lead to an immediate hans lynch, and hans is all about living to the late game when he claims to become useful.
and we are all but certain to have some crazy roles in this game that dont necessarily make sense.
i think hans is truthful, town, and shouldnt reveal any more.

Fair point. Just seems like a strange time to use an ability. The game had literally just begun. Then again Hans has not shown to be the most useful town player in the games I've played with him.
@Tom-What do you think about GJ saying this is a good game for no lynch?

@Tom-What do you think about GJ saying this is a good game for no lynch?
eh. we dont know what the ability did. and it didnt exactly have any drawbacks. im cool with it.
as for GJ: doesnt he always/usually do that?
i dont particularly agree with him, but im pretty sure it isnt alignment indicative.
even if he hadnt advocated for no lynch multiple times before, i dont find it scummy. i think that the Day 1 lynch usually hitting town is just a fact and skipping it isnt the worst thing.
I am a Governor again, planning on playing it the same way I did in Classic. This is a game of a different nature so I am not confirmed town by ability, however, when j decide to halt a lynch, I can either make the lynched player king for the day (meaning they alone choose the lynch) or publicly reveal their alignment to everyone.
Interesting that Hans made us skip a day, but not sure how that really affects the game. That said, the fact he claimed it and wasn't countered makes me feel good about him being town, I don't see him as scum being so forthcoming. Don't know how that ability helps us, but I believe that will manifest more as the game goes on.
@GJ Can you explain generally why you would favor a No Lynch here? Is it because of the relatively lower accuracy of lynches D1? Apologies if you have explained in the past. As one of our best tools to finding scum, why would you advocate not lynching?
@IMAB Was it Jobie's vote of Rod Serling that set you off, or what else tipped you to a serious vote on him?

Nacho is probably town (and not due to role reasons).
Why Hansa? Assuming Hansa is honest about his role, do you think mafia has a role that allows them to abruptly end a day (even though it might result in no night)?

I'll clarify that I knew beforehand that my action would immediately skip one day and night phase. And using it as a governor type ability isn't an option.
And that's all I'm going to say about that.

"I'm a compulsive liar no matter what team I play on, but I'm trying to get better about it."
<DISCONTINUITY>
Game State: Day 11
Deadline: August 11, 2016 at ~6:00 P.M. GMT -6
<17>
This game will start on Day 1 after all players have confirmed (by the method specified in their role PM).<18> Any player who is modkilled automatically loses the game.

In other news:
Tomsloger has received a Foul for post 2.

Taredas has received a Foul for being unable to hand out Fouls (and thus nip this in the bud) Friday.

I'm gonna start with a partial claim. I choose a number at the beginning of each day. My role pm specifically says I don't know what it does.
No idea if this is useful information
Vote Huntzilla because reasons.
Nothing like kicking off things with Umineko-branded mind-screwiness, isn't there.
Vote: Taredas
FoS: Ghosting
By the way, just a general announcement: Previous Mind Screw games (2 and 3) have included the ability Death Note, which allows someone to name a player and a ability name. If they match, then that player dies. If/when we reach claim time, do not claim ability name.

Another game I feel would benefit from this mode.
If there isn't a legit interest, I would at least like no more psuedo claiming unless you are a day vig. I will end the day by post 1,000. Without breaking any rules of the forum, I will force you all in a situation. I am a firm believer of LAL, so don't even try.
Let's have fun and kill some evil.

@Necarg: Do you have magic power to edit your posts?
Did you know there would be no night?
@GJ-Have you ever asked for day one no lynch as town? Last time you said that you flipped scum.
its worked all 3 games we've been in together.
...yes?
Remind me to revisit this after Nec answers. I noticed a thing.
I find your lack of faith in this town disturbing. You just need to have faith and hope for the best.
Vote: Killjoy
For being the previous Mafia Secretary. There can only be one.
I'm hoping we see the new and improved Tom this game.
On that note what do you think of the day being ended by Hans?
my reads have been pretty damn good in my mafia career (except wildfire), its the living past Day 2 thing ive been crappy at.
i think it probably makes hans town? ending the Day without getting a Night doesnt really seem like a scum thing...
on the other hand, we are being mind screwed so who ******* knows.
im inclined to believe hans here, and im not seeing the scum motivation for putting himself out there like that. its not like anyone would be shocked by lurking/regular hans.
No, I'm wondering how he knew there wouldn't be a night. He said that he was responsible for ending the day. Not that he was responsible for skipping the night. If he has the ability to end the day at anytime shouldn't he save that as some kind of one time governor ability?
I'm not saying it's scum motivated, I'm just pretty confused with the set-up at this point.
what we should actually take from that is its a thing that happened, and someone claimed responsibility for it.
it seems too risky to be a fake claim, as anyone saying "nope. that was me" would lead to an immediate hans lynch, and hans is all about living to the late game when he claims to become useful.
and we are all but certain to have some crazy roles in this game that dont necessarily make sense.
i think hans is truthful, town, and shouldnt reveal any more.
Fair point. Just seems like a strange time to use an ability. The game had literally just begun. Then again Hans has not shown to be the most useful town player in the games I've played with him.
@Tom-What do you think about GJ saying this is a good game for no lynch?
as for GJ: doesnt he always/usually do that?
i dont particularly agree with him, but im pretty sure it isnt alignment indicative.
even if he hadnt advocated for no lynch multiple times before, i dont find it scummy. i think that the Day 1 lynch usually hitting town is just a fact and skipping it isnt the worst thing.
What was the part of the post that you edited and why did you edit your post?
@Jobie
Of all the NPC's why did you vote Rod Serling?
@TappingStones
Hi there!!!
Vote:Jobie
Serious Vote.
I agree with GJ on LAL, not no lynching.
Outdated Mafia Stats
@GJ Can you explain generally why you would favor a No Lynch here? Is it because of the relatively lower accuracy of lynches D1? Apologies if you have explained in the past. As one of our best tools to finding scum, why would you advocate not lynching?
@IMAB Was it Jobie's vote of Rod Serling that set you off, or what else tipped you to a serious vote on him?
Why so serious (vote)?
Nacho is probably town (and not due to role reasons).
Why Hansa? Assuming Hansa is honest about his role, do you think mafia has a role that allows them to abruptly end a day (even though it might result in no night)?
@gj does governor nacho change your desire for no lynch?
i love where bur's head is at.
And that's all I'm going to say about that.
