I'm concerned about the integrity of our games when players are frequently banned for reasons unrelated to mafia. Mafia players' political beliefs shouldn't effect our games, but it's leading to people getting banned and it's not the first nor last time it will happen.

I tend to agree but that's like saying that real life affects the integrity of our games. It's an undeniable fact that cannot be prevented by anyone. It's hard but all we can do is make active choices that we find best for us. If we can anticipate something like this happening, then we should make active choices to not affect others. But this was unexpected to all of us, so all we can do now is wait for the dust to settle and pick up the pieces.
Thanks pf for continuing to mod your game. All the players in that game would be happy you continue to do that. Good luck in your endevors as well as your mandershex.

Pretty much the number 1 rule of this subforum is that all MTGS rules apply. If a user is banned from the forum, that's just something we have to deal with. If they are banned unjustly, then there are appeal procedures available. In this particular instance, all the recent bans are to be reconsidered by the staff.
Players dropping out of games because of bans or suspensions happens occasionally, and has never been a problem in the past: it is simply a case of finding a replacement.
I also don't see how a player being banned affects the integrity of a game: it isn't any different to any other replacement situation.
***
To those who may be leaving us in due course because of recent events: I will be sorry to see you leave, and we will certainly have to adjust the number of running games downwards to cope with the departure of an active contingent of the player base. I am immensely thankful for the general desire to finish current games before leaving: it would suck to have a player crisis if you all disappeared. It's a shame you feel the need to leave, but far be it from me to question your decision.
The need to leave, at least for me, is rested on this idea that people are getting banned for political beliefs unrelated to mafia. These people haven't done anything damaging to our game and could continue to play for years. But when they get shot down for antics across the forum, that puts our game in jeopardy unnecessarily. If we weren't on MTGS and were on a mafia-forum, this would never happen and we can keep our players. I'm not really content to say "oh well, bye guy I've known for years. I guess it wasn't your turn to give a ****!"
That's why I'm strongly suggesting the bans are overturned so we can get back to having fun.
That's kinda silly to expect, though. Sure, if they're mafia players, they should keep that responsibility in mind when doing other things around the forum. But if they care about the forum first, and mafia second, then we're just going to have to deal with the repercussions, being a subforum of MTGS.
Asking them to overturn the bans when they A) broke rules and B) think (whether this is true or not is another story) they are jeopardizing the site's sale to Curse/general well-being is unreasonable, and highly unlikely.
That kind of thought process is why our player base slowly dwindles over time as some of our best personalities get the shaft for something unrelated. It would be a hell of a lot nicer if you got banned for cheating in mafia or breaking a mafia rule rather than staging some sort of protest for free speech rights.
But that's their decision Zionite not ours. If they want to go down in flames, what we can do about it? Our subforum mods cant overrule the main forum bans.
It's sad to lose valuable members for outside cirscunstances, but I don't think they were banned for no reason and I think they already expected (wanted?) it.
Let's hope someday they can rejoin us.

Yeah, it sucks, but it's not the admins' who don't care about the health of mafia games, it's the players who didn't care about the health of their games enough to intentionally do stuff to get themselves banned.

Some good news in these dark times: there's a good chance that the mafia sub will soon be moved to the main forum index. This should, in theory, get us some fresh blood as we will no longer be burried under "Forum Games"

Just to be clear, if I do start playing mafia somewhere else, it will be in addition to playing here. I'm just trying to find a solution to the problem of disappearing players.
I play in 2 places as it is. Here, because I love the meta and the people and it was what got me started on Mafia, and TFE's site because some of my RL friends play there and I can get away with more shenanigans there in regards to both setups and play.
I've tried other sites, but I just haven't cared for the meta or people. I'd like to keep as much of us together as possible.

I just want to say a public "thank you" for the moderators and admins who helped with this decision. It's really appreciated by myself as a favor of good will and recognition about how important the sub-forum is to our playerbase.
Well, we do have the best mafia community on the web
Totally agree with you there. If it weren't for the stellar mafia we play here, I wouldn't have stuck around for so long. Even after I stopped keeping up with MTG I still played mafia. Hopefully that stays as an element of our community.
Ria, this is really really really really minor, but you're missing a period at the end of the "This is where all Mafia games will take place" description of the sub.
It may have been that way for a while now, to be honest. But it looks a tad out of sorts on the FP.

Short Story - Kpaca and a few others got banned.
Long Story - Go to ER's helpdesk and CI to get a full update.
So far I am pretty sure Kpaca was the only mafia player to get hit (since CK doesnt play anymore) but if he was in even once game it would throw a wrench. And since I know that myself and at least one other are on the edge being ready to go out with a bang ourselves. There might be a few more needing help soon. (personally I plan to finish my active games but who knows what might develop that will make me take a giant pill of fukital and go off on those persons who need to get their heads checked)
As some of you know, I've been talking with a number of people who aren't happy with the salvation brand at the moment and want to move the community elsewhere, but I'm very much against splitting up the community if at all possible.
MTGS is a great spot for us to be, mafia-wise. If we're looking for a site with a healthy enough level of traffic to replenish our userbase, there's really no comparison. And we've recently been moved to forum front page, which can only help matters. The drama waves that sometimes happen elsewhere haven't affected us (as a sub) for years, although there were times long ago when things got rough. None of the other potential sites offer the potential for us to keep replenishing our numbers at this point.
While perhaps in some future beyond my ability to predict at this moment, we might have to find new digs, I don't ever want to see the community break apart into tinier pieces. If we ever have to move, we should move together. At most, just make an adjunct site as in the past (maybe sending certain types of games that aren't suited to MTGS over there), with this remaining the primary nexus.
I heard there was a bit of drama going on.
I wanted people to know I don't know anything about the drama, I don't care what the drama is. I'm taking time off of mafia for my own sanity at this time. I'm hoping once I (1) find a job and get a schedule that is more balanced (2) find a groove to my new home life, (3) find a way to be patience with people that make me want to scream and (4) my son isn't home so I can have that patience without the interuptions making it worse for me.
Once those issues are resolved I will be back here to play. I have enjoyed many of the players here at MtG. Despite some headaches, many people have made this a really good place to play.

"As long as the ties that bind us together are stronger than those that would tear us apart, all will be well."
Hmm. In the event MTGS ever does go down, should we we prepare a contact info list (emails matched with usernames) and a backup site with all the information posts, articles, and games we want saved?
Is that something we're interested in putting together, or is it a bit unnecessary? If so, Guardman, or others, who might be interested in creating that?
Pretty sure that's unnecessary, especially in the current climate. If there was any actual indication that the site might go down, then such a backup would be a good idea, but until then it's a lot of extra bookkeeping.
For example, if we get indication that the sale to Curse is going ahead AND there'll be big changes, it could be considered. MTGN had plenty of warning when things started going south, and I think it incredibly unlikely that MTGS will just disappear overnight without warning.
Seems like it would be a lot of work to continuously save games in progress - those would likely have to be abandoned. On the other front, I've got e-mails for probably 15-18 users from FTQ discussions and reviews. A number of those will be connected to different others as well. We can probably recover much of the veteran userbase just by spiderwebbing out from there, but that would still leave others out in the cold.
Maybe just a general consensus to meet up at MafiaScum or something if this place goes down unexpectedly?
If someone wants to gather the information, that's fine for them, but from where I'm sitting, the mafia section is in no danger. I won't stop someone if they want to gather all that, I'm just telling you it's doomsaying nonsense and probably a waste of better-spent time.

I think spider webbing would get most of us back in. If anyone doesn't have a few MTGS buddies on some other chat network, I'd recommend doing so just as a backup.
I know there's a Steam group for the Family which has a few non-Family players such as myself on it.

I am one of the people has been talking to as I am in the process, as many of you know, of doing due diligence on the feasibility of setting up a mafia site. Now before I go further in my explanation, my main reason I am doing this is I believe the mafia player base has splintered already. We have lost members to non-mafia related bannings and there are several players that are going to leave or have already left the site. What I want is to bring the community back together and unfortuently I know that it will be impossible on Sally. That is just the nature of the beast. Out of this desire I decided the best way to do this would be to create a separate site that will co-exist alongside the Sally Mafia. I want to stress co-exist, I don't want to replace Sally Mafia. For one it holds memory, has a good playing culture, and would be an invaluable tool to gathering new members for my site. As such I decided to do due diligence on the prospects of a new site.
I have personally PMed around 45 people from the mafia community to get there general take on their thoughts about this. Here are the stats of those that responded:
Straight out yes - 27 (includes me)
Yes, Depends who joins - 2
Yes, Depends on time - 1
Yes, Tentative - 1
Interested, but currently retired - 3
Unknown (don't give an answer in their response) - 2
Straight out No - 3
No, but might be persuaded to join - 1
As you can see most people would support a new site with my intended purpose and goals which would include:
By having it be a separate site gives mods more freedom to design games and special game mod groups can be made for the duration of the game.
Greater freedom in what is and isn't possible via site rules that are designed with mafia in mind.
Better forum and game organization.
And hopefully back-end tech stuff that would enhance the mafia experience. (This is something I am currently looking into the feasibility of)
In the long run I think this is a great way to regain the old great community that we have lost or are soon to lose. At the same time I think having a site like this will be good for Sally Mafia as a whole. I want and believe this will be a symbiotic relationship were both prosper and join to become more than either could on their own.
I agree that it seems a bit unnecessary to back-up the site. I doubt the USS Sally is going to hit an iceberg any time soon.
But as for a contact list I have no problem with and think is probably a good idea.
Guardman, to get an accurate picture of what we're seeing with the statistics you describe, is there any way to tell the number of people who are wishing:
to coeexist with Salvation and play and/or participate both places.
-or-
to solely move to the new site and quit playing on Salvation altogether.
-or-
are unsure of both of the above and are waiting to see how everything plays out.
Is this feasible? If you do not have the data, you don't have to collect it. I know we sent a few PM's back and forth, and I'm assuming you did this with a lot of people too. If you could just ballpark it, it would be appreciated.

I will say I am one of those who would be interested to co-exist between both forums. I do not want to jump ship immediately. I like it here and I like Magic so why abandon this forum. If the other site does come into fruition, I'd probably play light on both probably 1-2 games each site (pending setups, etc.), so long as both communities are good (and hopefully a good mix of everyone currently present).

I went back through people's responses and did some quick tallying. It was too hard to tell for sure if most of them would stay or leave so I did more of a general did they mention Sally and/or the drama in a positive light or negative.
The result was surprising:
37% mentioned Sally in a positive light
37% mentioned Sally in a negative light
26% made no mention of a positive or negative view towards Sally
I take this to mean that the community is pretty evenly divided for the most part on whether they will stay with Sally or move over completely. In all actuality I doubt all 37% of the negative will move over completely, and think it would be more likely in 30%-20% range.
Players may not use out-of-game promises (example: I swear on my grandmother's life, I bet you my entire collection of magic cards, etc.) in an effort to influence other players.
EBWODP- in case you're wondering, I absolutely *detest* people who post crap like "I am one million percent sure that so-and-so is scum." Because unless the person you're talking about has already been lynched you are NOT sure. Millers, Godfathers, Traitors, etc all exist so not even a perfectly sane COP is ever sure of his target's alignment. That's not taking into account Naive, paranoid, or reverse cops. So anytime, someone posts that nonsense, I immediately bet them their sig space. If they lose, they have to proclaim that they suck at reading people for an acceptable amount of time. If they win, I happily change my signature to worship them and proclaim their greatness. The last person to win this bet with me was AniX.
This is occurring in Basic 68 and I think it needs addressing.
Hey guys, there's a discussion I had with council that want to share to the public. Recently I've discovered that moderators have the ability to "see" invisible members and investigate gimmick accounts. I feel this goes against the spirit of mafia because it gives them an unfair advantage against normal players. (ex: guy says he was without internet and not reading for the last few days, the mod sees he's invisible all the time in the thread therefore knows he's lying and scum lies more than town...).
That being said I don't think mods should be disallowed to play mafia games (of course) my first idea was to "turn off" those moderators powers just in the mafia subforum but the council already explained that's impossible so I want to ask if anyone has another solution to this "issue" if you even consider it a problem...

Just to be clear, if I do start playing mafia somewhere else, it will be in addition to playing here. I'm just trying to find a solution to the problem of disappearing players.
I've tried other sites, but I just haven't cared for the meta or people. I'd like to keep as much of us together as possible.

While I am here, I'd like to propose making new game signups a feature on the front page. Does anyone have an issue with this? The logistics are still being debated, but the FP is going to get a serious revamp & I'd like our awesome Mafia community to get some real estate & exposure

Thanks guys.
Totally agree with you there. If it weren't for the stellar mafia we play here, I wouldn't have stuck around for so long. Even after I stopped keeping up with MTG I still played mafia. Hopefully that stays as an element of our community.
It may have been that way for a while now, to be honest. But it looks a tad out of sorts on the FP.
In favor of Ria's suggestion.

Is that something we're interested in putting together, or is it a bit unnecessary? If so, Guardman, or others, who might be interested in creating that?
For example, if we get indication that the sale to Curse is going ahead AND there'll be big changes, it could be considered. MTGN had plenty of warning when things started going south, and I think it incredibly unlikely that MTGS will just disappear overnight without warning.
Maybe just a general consensus to meet up at MafiaScum or something if this place goes down unexpectedly?

The Family
In the long run I think this is a great way to regain the old great community that we have lost or are soon to lose. At the same time I think having a site like this will be good for Sally Mafia as a whole. I want and believe this will be a symbiotic relationship were both prosper and join to become more than either could on their own.
I agree that it seems a bit unnecessary to back-up the site. I doubt the USS Sally is going to hit an iceberg any time soon.
But as for a contact list I have no problem with and think is probably a good idea.
to coeexist with Salvation and play and/or participate both places.
-or-
to solely move to the new site and quit playing on Salvation altogether.
-or-
are unsure of both of the above and are waiting to see how everything plays out.

I love playing Mafia and always will. When/If Guardman gets his server up, then I will be playing on both sites.

This is occurring in Basic 68 and I think it needs addressing.

We even have Mafia!!
Sure, didn't know the procedure. Sorry.
That being said I don't think mods should be disallowed to play mafia games (of course) my first idea was to "turn off" those moderators powers just in the mafia subforum but the council already explained that's impossible so I want to ask if anyone has another solution to this "issue" if you even consider it a problem...
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
Not really a great solution, but invisible mode does kind of gum of the works anyway. Having it on would be a strategic gamble in a game with a mod.
