Hello, and welcome back to You Make The Card! Last month we made a bottom-up green enchantment that ended up working quite well from a flavor standpoint as well. This month we're going to design a card from one of the sets that the recently spoiled Planechase mini-expansion pays homage to.
As some of you may know, there are four set mechanics represented in the new Planechase cards, which are listed in the poll above. The card we make is going to have the mechanic that wins the poll, so its up to you all which plane you'd like to revisit. Will it be Alara with Cascade or Devour? Will it be Kamigawa with Ninjutsu? Will it be Zendikar with Totem armor? Its up to you! Vote for your favorite mechanic(s), and we'll move from there. Any advantages or disadvantages to making a card with the chosen mechanic can be discussed below.
This thread will be open until June 2nd at 11:59pm GMT.
Our next thread opens on June 3rd by 11:59pm GMT.
Our general plan for this month will be decided based on the mechanic that gets selected.
Have feedback about YMTC? Your opinions are appreciated and can be either posted in this thread or sent as a personal message to Piar or jwanders.
I think cascade is not a fun mechanic to design around, since you can't really do much with it. I think the most fun to design with would be ninjutsu and totem armor
Totem Armor. There's a lot of flexibility in the kinds of cards it can be used on (look at the range between the two new Auras with the mechanic in Planechase 2012) and Auras are a perennial favorite card type.
Ninjutsu is my second choice, but it's surprisingly tough to find new design space for it to mine while keeping card text to a reasonable length, in my opinion.
I feel like there is a lot more when ~ enters the graveyard from the battlefield and stuff like that space left for totem armor and I would like to check that out, totem armor has so many ways to go as well since there are no black and red armors yet

Personaly I am a fan of Devour, and think more could be done with it. And after seeing the special ones that have a secondary effect that is equal in proportion to how much the card Devour'd, I can see several new possibilities for it.
Cascade could be fun, you can always have text that modifies the cascade. (IE: If/When this creature Cascades, X) or (This creature Cascades for its CMC + X)

What about a card that says "when this card is cast by cascade"?
Or a CMC 1 cascade, in black, with no other effects (does cascade exile or discard? Or reshuffle?).
A cascade card with converted mana cost 1 would be incredibly broken with Living End and friends. That's why they can't even print a 2 cmc cascade card.
How is Ninjutsu + Devour, not the most popular thing ever!?
That... is beautiful!! Though there isn't really anything else you would need to do beyond having those 2 keywords, because after them, adding anything else would make it a bit insane.
It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
Got a feeling we have some Creature - Demon Ninja ala Silent-Blade Oni submissions with Devour and Ninjutsu in the works, probably in black since blue doesn't typically do devour.
Devour and Ninjitsu would be an epic creature to make, though flavor wise it would be interesting to try and make it work. How can something devour and do so in a ninja like manner.
Kami are evil spirits, no? Can't we have a Ninja Kami (Ninja Spirit) that eats 'souls' (thereby killing said target).
Devour simply implies (flavorfully) that something is consumed for power. Doesn't have to be flesh.
Edit; They've done a green samurai - so why not a green/black, malevolent ninja spirit?
The (green) ninja part could be an exiled ninja, who found himself lost in a forest.
The (black) malevolent part is the ninjas spirit. Quite angry at being exiled.
Edit2; Well, it's still early anyways. We're only doing mechanics here.
While Ninjutsu Devour on paper sounds cool, it's horrific in terms of Melvin. With ninja's you want to be getting them back to your hand so you can slam them down again and replay some ETB creature. If we stick devour on a ninja, the issue becomes that it forces you to play a ninja in a way you wouldn't want to because you invested into putting counters on it.
The only thing I could think of that might work is if the counters have a very large impact on it's combat damage to player ability. But then you're still encouraging players not to play it much like a ninja.

Check out the thread for my cube if you have the time, and tell me how terrible it is.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
Yeah, while conceptually cool it would end up being a lot of work to keep a Devouring Ninja fed each time it swoops into play (which, being a Ninja, a player naturally wants to be able to do repeatedly).

The only workaround I can imagine would be if its combat damage effect (or ETB I guess) generated multiple tokens. A Ninja with devour 2 that creates a 1/1 black Rat for each +1/+1 counter on it when it damages an opponent, for example.

That's something I could get behind. But the purpose of this poll is to select one keyword to use, not two. This particular idea can be developed elsewhere (except in the unlikely event of an exact tie, maybe).

^^^This is pretty cool. Can we dip into G for a ninja though, since in Kamigawa they were exclusively U or B? Or was there a B Orochi I'm forgetting?
Hehe, found Serpent Assassin. Lol Portal.
What about an Orochi that has embraced the darkness in order to hunt Oni, ala Demon hunters in Warcraft 3.
