Let's try this again...in the right forum this time.
Hello everyone! I have been around the site for about a month, and in that time I have come across some great people who are awesome at designing cards. I thought that maybe we could all come together and design a custom set. I would technically be "in charge," but it would be made by us, for us. I really want this set to be about the wonderful community of people here at MTG Salvation and the great ideas and cards we can come up with.
Let me know if you guys are interested, and feel free to start leaving suggestions for themes.
I'd possibly be down for something like this, as it'd be a first for me even seriously trying a set project outside of "what if" ideas by myself. However, based on what I've seen at this site, if this does happen this thread will likely be filled with many pages simply discussing design goals long before any card ideas are even provisionally decided upon. Since it's completely open-ended at the moment, there's a hell of a lot to decide and there are inevitably going to be different visions.
You need to figure out some kind of specific idea beyond "Board Custom Set". At which point, it really won't be an official MTG salvation custom set, but a group effort custom set done by certain members, which has been done here before. To my mind, some sort of setting or at least a theme needs to be decided upon, as well as an answer to keflexxx's question. It's really not practical to come up with something purely from scratch.
yeah asking the forum at large to define things is too big a task, but at the same time you don't want your team pulling you in disparate directions so you need some boundaries drawn first
I want to start with people suggesting themes, and then we can have a poll to decide what we want the final theme to be. The main thing I want for this is for anyone to be able to suggest ideas and make suggestions for the set, instead of it just being worked on by a few select people. There are dozens of talented card designers on this site, and while this project may not necessarily fit with everyone's idea of what they want it to be, I want the entire design process to be open to everyone.
In response to keflexxx, it will depend entirely on the theme we decide on. I don't even want to start thinking about what I want the design goals to be, because the whole point is I want everyone to be involved. I'm just here to organize, plan, and make executive decisions if absolutely necessary.
Just off the top of my head, here some settings or themes that I think would be cool to try to make an MTG set out of: The Witcher (Dark Nordic Fantasy with lots of pre-existing lore to draw from), a "legendary matters" theme done right, or a set focused on multiplayer team play with some interesting new ways to play multiplayer (such as stuff that benefits and interacts with your team-mates). Those are just a few things that'd I've been tempted by for myself at least.
Problem is, that's just *me* and *my* ideas. Going by the entire forum, you're going be swamped with competing possibilities.
I think the idea of a poll for themes or settings is a good idea. And I definitely appreciate the notion of it being open to anyone. Though I really think in practice things may end up with only certain people being significantly involved anyway.
"Battlelands" already don't make sense because unless the other 5 are printed in "Ravnica the Third: Battle for Jace's Head" or something, "battle" means impressively nothing.

to my mind, the first question is this: top-down or bottom-up, and what are the focuses?

bit of a chicken and egg conundrum
