imo lands are the ultimate backdrop in Magic. Even though the lands of Legends were pretty terrible mechanically, they felt like they were telling a story. I think the lands of Legends can and should tell a story as we'll and be mechanically "better" form lack of a better term. I agree that our nonbasic lands should really stand out from one another and not feel like a cycle even if they technically are part of one.
Forests of Yavimaya (Rare)
Legendary Land - Arena T: Add R or G to your mana pool. 3(R/G), T: Target legendary creature you control fights another target legendary creature.

Common arenas would be smaller in scope:

2. Open a little design space (particularly in sealed, not that we care about sealed)
3. Tie the common lands to the rare lands, establishing a connected feel of backdrop continuity yet remaining just abstract enough to maintain that Legends feel
Legend, I like your flavor perspective on this! I think we just have different ideas of how it would be implemented. This is what I'm thinking:
The Necrodrome
Legendary Land [M] T: Add 1 to your mana pool. T: Target legendary creature you control fights target legendary creature you don't control. Flavor text describing the Necrodrome as a mobile arena of doom.
And then all of the set's other legendary lands can be free to be whatever they want to be — I was hoping that with the Discordian "backdrop", that a bunch of different environments and cultures could be visited in Legends 2: you have all of these micro-planes slammed together, and I think it would be cool to see a bunch of them. Like Shards of Alara on crack.
I think the "arena" flavor can be transmitted by having this one chase mythic (I think it's pretty chase, at least...) that is referenced in the flavor text of a lot of different cards. That's my thought for how to handle it.

Correct me if I'm wrong - you're saying that the legendary duals and common duals as I described them are mechanically sound, but should represent Discordia instead of the Necrodome and should therefore not have the Arena subtype? I hope so because I would be more than happy with that if everyone else is on board with it. I was under the impression that the arena aspect was the backdrop, when actually it's just a major component/theme of the actual backdrop - Discordia.
I was under the impression that the arena aspect was the backdrop, when actually it's just a major component/theme of the actual backdrop - Dicordia.
Correct!
I mean, that was my idea, at least! To clarify:
The setting of Legends 2 is Discordia.
Discordia is an artificial plane composed of hundreds / thousands of microplanes that are constantly shifting in relation to one another a la the Cube, through a process called the planequake.
Really, anything goes in Discordia, setting-wise (that's why I wanted to do it — so we would each have total creative freedom.)
The Necrodrome is simply the Big Bad, the most powerful microplane, that is systematically annihilating / overtaking all the others by making them fight each other to the death whenever the planequake puts the Necrodrome in proximity to those microplanes.
So it's Shadow Raiders: War Planets is what I'm getting.
I know nothing about that, but... maybe???
Now that I'm remembering Cube, I'm definitely realizing that it was my subconscious inspiration: insane architecture, violent deaths, shifting and quaking, a creator who has completely forgotten about its existence / purpose.
Except that instead of glowy neon deathboxes, you have little isolated (but legendary!) pockets of reality taken from across the Multiverse. And death comes in the form of one especially nasty example of those reality pockets.
Haha, the show I referenced was a lesser-known offering of Mainframe Entertainment, whom 90s kids adored for ReBoot and Beast Wars: Transformers. Basically, it was about these feuding planets with various monomaniacal themes (there was the planet of the skeezy lizardpeople, the fire one where everyone was angry, the technology one where everyone was a nerd) having to deal with the threat of the most powerful planet, a roving monstrosity that consumed other planets.

We probably definitely want a card with that effect, but not as the Necrodome because the Necrodome is about fighting. It's Discordia that makes legends "appear". But Discordia is a Plane so it wouldn't be represented by just a land.
Undead Sentry (Common) 3B

Remove a charge counter from Mana Battery: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
2, t: Put a legendary permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield.
This also strikes me as simply too powerful as a repeatable ability for just two colorless, especially on a land. It's basically Elvish Piper for legendaries permanents, on a land. Imagine a deck filled with powerful, high-cost legendary permanents, and you pumping one out for 2 mana each turn. It would allow for a Turn 2 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. So, I'm "back" at mtgsalvation, and have been talking with Legend, void_nothing, et al. about reviving L2, and that sounds overall like a great idea.
I love the approach that you guys took to "spitballing" cards after I left, and I think that's still the best approach right now. I don't have time to MC a meticulously-organized design project, and in any case, I think the best way to avoid the "too many cooks in the kitchen" problem is to let everybody work in their own kitchen, so to speak.
So, here's what I'm going to request: post your cards directly here in this thread, or if you post them elsewhere, please drop a link to that other post here in this thread so we can find those cards later. I will generally post my cards in the main forum so that they can get better feedback, but I'll be sure to drop the links here.
If you post a card or link here, I will list you as a contributor on the main page. We will worry about merging, revising, finalizing ideas much later. For now, just go design crazy.
So, right now I'm working on filling out a spreadsheet of 50 legendary cards, most of which are composed of various cycles. FYI, here are the cards that I'm working on:
5 card common legendary land cycle (first draft DONE - see "Grandeur Lands", above)
5 card common, monocolored "Brothers Yamazaki" cycle (first draft DONE - see "Super Yamazaki Bros.", above)
10 card uncommon, dual-color, legendary creature + grandeur cycle (see "2 Legends", above)
5 uncommon legendary artifacts, possibly but not necessarily a cycle
5 rare legendary artifacts, possibly but not necessarily a cycle
10 card rare, tri-color, legendary creature cycle
5 card rare legendary enchantment cycle
5 card mythic, 4-color, legendary ELDER DRAGON creature cycle
I'm not saying that all of those cycles need to exist in the final accounting of L2, but that's where my design mind is, and that's what I'm working on. Note, I'm going to do all of those myself, so I don't need help creating them, I just need feedback. What I DO need is for you to create whatever YOU want to see in L2, regardless of what I'm doing, even if it conflicts with what I'm doing. We'll iron out the wrinkles later. We should just create ideas en masse right now.
I had this vague idea of an enchantment cycle at uncommon or rare that would basically "restore old rules" - artifacts don't work when they're tapped; tapped blocking creatures deal no combat damage; unspent mana emptying causes mana burn, that sort of thing... concept needs refining, I think.
I would love to be get any of these themes across that I could:
So what do we do to make legends super fun to play with?
1) Legends are unique. There Can Only Be One. Exalted? Grandeur. Your legend can more often and not be your win condition. Maybe some of them have built-in alternate wins.
2) Legends are part of an adventuring party. They work together and team up. Bonuses for two different legends attacking, blocking, or activating abilities together.
3) Build a legendary kingdom. Encourage playing legendary creatures alongside legendary artifacts, enchantments, and lands.
I also want to go for an "old school" feel in general, although not in the Time Spiral block way. As opposed to directly referencing old cards, I want to achieve some kind of pastiche of old-time Magic. So I'll be designing here with that in mind.
Other cycle ideas to consider later: Zodiac animals a la P3K but for the Western sidereal zodiac (maybe make this ten color pairs, one colorless, and one five-color?); "double Kird Ape" cycle with a bonus for controlling each of two basic land types.
Also, we can make even the vanillas feel odd and old-school with the right flavor!

here's an article that helps put one in the mood to design old school style.

T, Return Floating Citadel to its owner's hand: Add 2 to your mana pool.
Green Knight GG

Generations Pass 3UU
Sorcery (R)
Exile all creatures. For each creature exiled in this way, its controller may search their library for a creature card with converted mana cost equal to or less than 1 plus that creature's converted mana cost and put it onto the battlefield. Then each player who searched their library in this way shuffles it.

I'm still into this. Guesswork and Jetvans seem to be afk though. Also, welcome Pcaoren.

Ascension (When this enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you exile a nonlegendary black creature you control. When this leaves the battlefield, that card returns to the battlefield.)
Whenever you cast a spell, each opponent loses 1 life for each of that spell's colors.
Super Yamazaki Bros.
Sexy Wall Stuff
2 Legends
I would love to be get any of these themes across that I could:
I also want to go for an "old school" feel in general, although not in the Time Spiral block way. As opposed to directly referencing old cards, I want to achieve some kind of pastiche of old-time Magic. So I'll be designing here with that in mind.
