Why keep Carrion in the set? It is too generic and boring. It has no new interactions, strategical elements, or design components to justify it. There is surely a better mechanic that could fill a very similar role. Carrion works well, but there's nothing new about it, so it ends up being subpar.
@DJK
I don't see what you're saying. Carrion has strong flavor and plays well. There are no existing mechanics you can really compare it to. What more could you ask for in a mechanic?

All of those mechanics pile counters on one creature. Carrion puts 1 counter on each creature, promoting many creatures in play. It also helps break board stalls between large creatures.
I am defending my mechanic, but that being said, I will keep in mind that you feel like the mechanic isn't exciting. If enough people feel that way, it definitely means something.
I would definitely explore potential new mechanic space now, currently, your set isn't very exciting and it could use some more things for people to play around with.
Common testing has been going pretty well. I had to fix the as-fan of Clash and blue is a little too strong, but otherwise it has been fun. Will be playtesting with uncommons next. Let me know if you guys have any ideas for cool limited archetypes in W/G or W/B
Just wanted to say I'm staring to look into designing sets and this one really caught my attention! I absolutely love the flavor (prehistoric animals are the best animals), and I also like the mechanics. I was definitely skeptical of Primal as a supertype, but it looks like the best way to denote prehistoric creatures besides making it a subtype. I also like carrion as a differenter version of modular, the limit of 1 counter per creature helps keep it from getting out of control.
My main question is how do you playtest? Do you just scribble card names onto basic lands, or do you use a program to do it on a computer? This is just a logistical problem I haven't figured out yet.
Thanks for the interest. when I playtest I print to pdf from MSE and I have the local copy shop print and cut the cards in black and white and I put the slips of paper over sleeved cards.
Limited has been a little dull. I've decided to reduce the vanilla matters themes and add Evolve to the set. I'm also planning on increasing the number of build-around uncommons to try to flesh out more limited archetypes.
There is a giant disconnect here as to why certain creatures are primal and why other are not. Why is Allosaurus Primal but Brontosaurus not? Aren't they both giant dinosaurs from a bygone era? There are a ton of these examples throughout the set. There is no real cohesive theme as to what makes a creature primal aside from it being vanilla.
I put primal on the vanilla creatures to allow synergies with vanilla creatures. The flavor fits well with that creature, but it doesnt make much sense that other creatures arent primal, as you said. I think I'm going to remove primal and use vanilla as a prominent theme but not something you build a deck around. I'm going to replace it with Evolve, a mechanic I was planning for the second set.

The set overall is looking better and better. I hope you're sticking with it.
