This block is a top-down design, meaning it was inspired by its setting and the mechanics were made to reflect that - but with that said, the setting and story is currently not very flushed out, as I feel capturing the world's feel through the cards works better for me than having a world set in stone and trying to fit in cards around it.
The set is only half-way complete, and even then a lot of cards in it will get culled, revised, or otherwise butchered up during its development.
The plane of Avant is an exceedingly harsh land to survive in. It is a rough landscape that is twisted by metal, and in turn corrupts those metals into twisted forms. A plague known as 'The Blight' sweeps the land, corrupting any pure metals it comes across into toxic, poisonous metal. The creatures of the plane are either savage constructs born of the Blight, or have learned to use them for their own survival, sometimes incorporating metal into their own form. Meanwhile, the denizens of the plane once could do little but fight for their own survival - trying with all their might to protect what little pure metals they had from the Blight, while also driving away the beasts that tried to kill them. But, in time, they advanced, and built cities surrounded by vast walls, sheltering them from the horrors outside of them. Pure Steels became worth more than gold, and over time, the techniques they once used to defend their very lives became little more than an art and amusement for their citizens. They left the outside world to its own devices, becoming wrapped up in their own political schemes and architectural advancement, and in doing so allowed greater forces to gather in the shadows, waiting for their moment to strike back at those who have enjoyed the light for so long.
While this set is not Tribal, that doesn't mean goblins are now blue - everything has its place.
Major tribes: WUR - The Humans living within the city of Konarch, content to stay safe within their walls and ignore the horrors outside. WB - The Humans of the Vhorril Stronghold, led by Marr Dhoran in order to spread the Blight, which they believe to be true purity. GU - The Rasaal, a fairly primitive race of winged serpents, living on the endless isles, that can match anything for speed, be it in the air, land, or sea. BG - The spider of legends, Khora, leads her army of spiderlings on a path to take over the endless isles, slowly spreading her corruption. RG - The Elves of Nhara. They hold grand tournaments to see who is worthy to journey outside their walls to gather resources and information.
Minor tribes: UB - The Merfolk of the endless isles, constantly warring with the Rasaal for territory, are led by Lisella, a powerful mage. GW - The Leonin of Avant hold no home, but instead brave the wilds as nomads. They tend to forsake metal, and look to the stars for guidance.
Other forces also gather - Komora, the Demon of Thorns slowly grows in power. Elementals are born every day within the Searing Barrens. And an otherwordly threat appears to be emerging...
Corrode - When this card enters the battlefield, you may sacrifice an artifact. If you do, [effect].
This is an exploit for artifacts, although I designed it before exploit was announced. This forms up the core of the set, with all colors having access to it.
Infuse X(You may cast this spell for its infuse cost at any time you could cast an instant. If you do, sacrifice it at end of turn.)
Seen on Armor of Thorns, this allows you to cast your auras as combat tricks instead. Although it states you sacrifice the aura at end of turn, it is done during the clean-up step for rules reasons. This is not stated in the reminder text as most players don't know what the clean-up step is.
Etch (When this creature dies, you may exile it etched onto target creature.)
Somewhere between haunt and a reversed bestow, this ability appears only on artifact creatures, and gives them continued usefulness even after death - or being corroded. Unlike bestow, cards with etch rarely grant their full stats and abilities to the etched creature. Instead, they only give minor bonuses.
Voyage N (Exile N other cards from your graveyard: Put this card on top of your library from your graveyard. Activate only as a sorcery.)
A simple mechanic that allows you to convert your graveyard to fuel, allowing you to recur spells and even creatures as you need them.
This mechanic is still in question and may not make the final cut.
Prestige (Whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
A renamed Bushido, locked at 1. While not the most interesting mechanic to look at, so is Prowess, and that has made it pretty far. Cards in the set will also have other effects that trigger when they block or become blocked.
