"In the beginning, MTG Salvation switched to a new forum format.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
So in our last poll, Pre-Constructed decks was the most popular option. Since there are many possible types of precon sets we can make, we'll start by brainstorming ideas and then take a vote. Duel Decks, the second most popular choice, will also be an option in-case no single idea can be agreed upon.
To get the ball rolling, a couple of example ideas from the last thread included:
- Commander decks (for instance, 4 color)
- Horde or Challenge decks
- Pairs or Trios of decks for 2HG or Emperor
- Variant involving hidden roles (like Mafia or Bang!)
- etc.
Feel free to comment on your favorites and suggest new ideas below.

Challenge decks seem fun. It is somewhat of a compromise between horde format(because there's still an "AI" deck to fight against) and usual everyone-vs-everyone deal.

Wizards can start putting booster packs inside dog poo and dog owners will still complain.
I've been thinking about ideas for an Eldrazi Challenge Deck, and also some interesting Eldrazi cards for a prerelease type event which would "gatecrash" your game, wreak some devastation, then jump on to the next game. I'd be interested in the hidden roles options as well.
I'd prefer not to do challenge decks, and would much rather do some 4c Commander decks (though it's not what wizards does, we could make commander decks w/ 100% custom cards if we felt like it), but I'll be fine if we do challenge decks. If we do challenge decks, Phyrexians or Eldrazi seem like the best plan....
Ooooh! Maybe we could do a regular deck of custom cards to go along with the challenge deck....

Wantonwizard: Feeding off of MTG's bloated corpse since 1996.
I cast my vote to not do 4 color commanders.
Challenge decks where it could be played with against "AI" or another player may be cool. Think Archenemy except they get a horde deck backing them up.
Personally, I feel that reprints are necessary to set a baseline. Yes, all cards have to fit with the rest of magic, but having lots of reprints helps to frame the new cards much better. Otherwise we're just designing cards to play with themselves, which just seems kind of like designing a booster set but with far less interesting interactions. That said, I don't think we need to hold ourselves to the same line WotC does. I think whatever we end up with (in terms of Magic cards, not other possible variant cards) should be about 40% reprints. This should give us enough space to come up with interesting designs, but retain the ability to include cool existing cards.
My favorite idea mentioned thus far is the "Mafia" variant. It seems like a simple addition that could add some interesting twists to gameplay. It has its own issues sure, but I like how it allows for alliances and betrayal without the actual "politics"; everyone's allegiance is predetermined. I like politics personally, but I know many people don't and this could be an interesting multiplayer alternative. I was wary of this before Conspiracy spoilers started, but now that we know that set is very clearly going in a different direction, this one has risen to the top.
I'm not against the challenge decks, I just think they'd be very hard to balance (much like how Archenemy was).
Or - Fluxx: the Gathering, with a "wincon deck" that you have to fulfill a certain number of cards from.
I kind of like this idea as well. Some EDH leagues have all sorts of achievements that can be earned for points to encourage more creative deck building and play instead of just trying to win the game as best as possible. Could be an interesting variant trying to work in this idea.

I personally would like smaller side-missions rather than full-fledged alternate win-cons with maybe a rule stating you win the game when you collect a certain amount of completed missions - that way the mission is less liable to swing the game around by itself. Also a single fulfilled mission could come with its own reward e. g.
Raid
Quest
When three or more creatures you control attack, complete this quest. Reward - When you complete this quest, draw a card.
: Abandon this quest.
Exploration
Quest
Lands enter the battlefield with exploration counters on them.
When you control three lands with exploration counters on them, remove all exploration counters from all lands and complete this quest. Reward - When you complete this quest, tutor for a land card. Put it onto the battlefield.
: Remove all exploration counters from all lands. Abandon this quest.
etc.
First to -say- five completed quests wins the game. Something like that?

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
I was thinking more along the lines of a point system. Each quest would be worth a certain number of victory points, and at the end of the game the player with the most points wins. Winning the "game" of magic is also worth points and of course stops other players from completing missions; it's kind of like catching the snitch.
The reason I like this strategy is that it ensures players have incentives to both complete quests and play normal magic. If quests are alternate win conditions then decks will either be built only to finish them or only to win before others can do them.

This thread seems interesting. I hope you don't mind my feedback.
The problem with the whole quest idea is that you need to make sure that the quest are somewhat obtainable for almost ALL decks. For example, don't make a quest card that only a certain type of deck can complete.
For the design of the quests... Perhaps it would be a good idea to have each player have 5-10 quest cards, and then they shuffle all quest cards, and then shuffle all the quest cards from all players into a pile. When the game begins, you flip over a quest card. When the quest is completed, it goes to bottom of the pile, and the next one on top is revealed. You do this until a player wins enough "quest points" to win the game.
Would a player losing the game give the other players quest points?

Just wanted to say I like the quest idea a lot. I think as long as we make sure the quests aren't to specific (reward on 3 creatures is good, reward on 3 blue creatures is bad), it has a lot of potential.

I agree with quest idea. I don't think that we should make an expansion over something like Commander or Planechase (there are already products over this), when we can go with something different, something that hasn't been made yet.
Challenge decks seem fun as well though. We could definitely do a lot with that.

I vote 60 card theme decks to go with a variant format of some kind which we also design for. Could be Horde or Mafia or a new Planechase/Archenemy or anything really.

“Tell me who you walk with, and I'll tell you who you are.” Esmeralda Santiago Art is life itself.
We could always do quests like ticket to ride, where each player draws 3 at the beginning of the game and can choose one or more to keep. Or we could do loyalty cards like battlestar galactica, where there is a shared quest which all players are working towards, but some players are secretly working against the group. In terms of rewards for completing quests, perhaps a deck of powerful spells of which say, 6 are dealt face up at the beginning of the game, and whenever someone completes a quest they get to cast it without paying its mana cost (like Pokemon lol)
Can you tell I play a lot of games? A magic themed munchkin set would be super fun!
Edit: I'd love to do theme decks for archenemy, with the tempting offer and join forces cards showing up again.
Edit 2: I'd quite like to do some archenemy decks, but also 5 monocolor decks to play against them. A lot has changed since the first archenemy, with mean stuff like extort and new phyrexian praetors showing up since then.
So, the forum kind of freaked out and added a faulty poll to this thread, so I created a new thread with a poll that includes the most common suggestions from this one.
