An acquaintance of mine, who goes by the handle Shiny_Umbreon, created the following card, engendering a long discussion:
Imitator of the Beyond2WU
Creature — Shapeshifter
As you cast Imitator of the Beyond, you may have it become a copy of any face-up nonland card in exile and choose targets for it. (You still pay this card's original mana cost.)
0/0
My main question is whether this wording works at all. My second question is whether this will trigger "When you cast" triggers if the spell it ends up copying has one of those (as does Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.)
My third question is whether this wording works better, or at least is more comprehensible: Imitator of the Beyond2WU
Creature — Shapeshifter
You may cast ~ as a copy of any face-up exiled nonland card, except its mana cost is still 2WU.
0/0
To summarize:
1.) Do either of these cards work?
2.) Does the first wording trigger "When you cast" triggers of cards its copying?
They would both work if the relevant CR entries were modified to accommodate these changes. This is to be expected, however, as there are currently no cards or card interactions that call for spells becoming copies of other spells while they are first put onto the stack to be cast.
The timing that makes most sense for this would be the same as Clone's or a split card's -- have the choice of spell that the object becomes be announced and done as it's being put onto the stack. Specifically,
601.2a* The player announces that he or she is casting the spell. That card (or that copy of a card) moves from where it is to the stack. It becomes the topmost object on the stack. That player becomes its controller. If one of its abilities allows its controller to cast it as a copy of another object, that player may announces his or her intentions to do so. The spell has all the characteristics of the card (or copy of a card) associated with it or the object that its controller chose to have the spell become a copy of, and it remains on the stack until it's countered, it resolves, or an effect moves it elsewhere.
If you make this a keyword, you could put this extra bit in the rules for that keyword, but as it stands, you would have to modify the process of casting spells itself.
By the way, good timing with this! I just made a card on file that allowed for "spell-cloning" like this as well.
