How would the mana cost work out if I sacrificed an imp with solid mana, such as Bog Imp (costs :1mana::symb:)? Conversely:
Goblin Hero :3mana::symr::symw:
Creature - Goblin Knight (R)
Goblin offering (You may cast this card any time you could cast an instant by sacrificing a Goblin and paying the difference in mana costs between this and the sacrificed Goblin. Mana cost includes color.)

How would the mana work if I sacrificed Boros Recruit (costs :symrw:)? Or Hearthfire Goblin (costs :symrw::symrw::symrw:)?
For the first case, you first calculate what components of each of the hybrid mana symbols you want to pay, then apply the cost reduction.
Effects that reduce the amount of colored mana you have to pay can reduce the amount of mana of any type you have to pay (that is, mana represented by generic mana symbols); however, it is not true the other way around. This is because theoretically, you can pay 1 with B; an effect that says something costs B less means you no longer have to pay that B, thus reducing 1 to 0. But anyway...
For Imp-Eating Demon:
If you choose to pay 4RR, 4RR - 1B = 2RR that you have to pay 4BR - 1B = 3R 4BB - 1B = 3B
For the second case, for each hybrid mana symbol, you calculate which component of the hybrid mana symbol you want to reduce the cost for.
So for Goblin Hero and Boros Recruit, it would either cost 3RW - R = 3W, or 3RW - W = 3R.
For the Hero and Hearthfire Goblin, it would cost any of the following: 3RW - RRR = 1W 3RW - RRW = 2 3RW - RWW = 2 3RW - WWW = 1R
Relevant rules:
117.7b If a cost is reduced by an amount of colored mana that exceeds its mana component of that color, the cost's mana component of that color is reduced to nothing and the cost's generic mana component is reduced by the difference.
117.7c If a cost is reduced by an amount of mana represented by a hybrid mana symbol, the player paying that cost chooses one half of that symbol at the time the cost reduction is applied (see rule 601.2e). If a colored half is chosen, the cost is reduced by one mana of that color.
