This one doesn't feel much like a Sphinx to me. I know Sphinxes can have a huge variety of what they can do, but this felt more like a zombie or a vampire.
This is a fun card and very hydraish. I like that it can enter the game relatively early and still be effective late game. Good job.
I like the idea of fog counters, but I also don't like one of a kind counter types. Quite Angelish too
Ummm, I feel like this is a cop out. It's a decent enough card and fits the criteria, but it doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the contest
I enjoyed this card, I think it does a good job of representing black but also what Sphinxes typically do. It's got a ton of JCP potential and appeal
I like this card, very practical. I do feel like Red Demons were the easiest leap for this challenge, but overall a nice card
Ichor Hydra4BB Creature-Hydra [Rare]
Manaburst - Ichor Hydra enters the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it for each B mana spent to cast it. 1B, Remove a -1/-1 counter from Ichor Hydra: Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn. Each bit of flesh it consumes makes it bigger and harder to kill.
8/8
I like the general feel of this card but I think it needs some work in development. A 6 mana 6/6 base at rare that kills 2 creatures and while growing into an 8/8 all which can be done at instant speed seems unfair. The flavor text feels off because I am not picturing it eating creatures but spraying contained contagion becoming more pure/powerful.
Guardian of the Afterlife5WB
Creature - Sphinx (Rare)
Flying, lifelink, deathtouch
Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, you may create a 2/2 black and white Zombie creature token with lifelink and deathtouch.
4/4
With a very cursory look at sphinx mythology I don't really buy having a sphinx guard the afterlife being mischievous and treacherous(Not someone I would trust guarding practically anything.) However I do like the idea of the sphinx using it's role to create creatures of unlife so I'm going back and forth on it. Regardless this does not need to be a sphinx.
Balance seems fine. Power late drop in limited, not much use in constructed.
Illusory HydraxUU
Creature - Hydra Illusion (Rare)
Illusory Hydra enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
When Illusory Hydra becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it. UU: Return Illusory Hydra to its owner's hand.
0/0
I like this hydra. I like the flavor and it seems like a role player in some sort of control. That being said I think it could be run at xU without any concern for power. A control player would probably be leaving up UU anyways so its size doesn't seem to be an issue.
Chazaqiel, Angel of Fog1GUU
Legendary Creature - Angel (M)
Flying, Defender
When Chazaqiel blocks a creature put a fog counter on that creature.
Creatures with fog counters can’t deal damage and damage can’t be dealt to them.
0/7
Art by
This angel was the most exciting of the submissions but maybe it was because of the picture which fits it well. The guardian spirit doesn't need to be an angel but the angel type is fine. The effect is mythic and the cost is fine. An issue I have is how hard it is to kill both in combat and through damage I would either lower the toughness or give the fog counters after combat
Angel Fish (Uncommon) 2UU
Creature - Angel Fish
1/5 UU, t: Target creature gains hexproof until end of turn. Netherdeep warriors often wear angel fish scale armor because of its natural magic resistance.
I don't like the angel fish. I think printing an off color icon at uncommon is an issue The flavor text makes me think the fish should be sacrificed. When I read the name Angel Fish I don't think angel I think fish that has been named after an angel which is how the whole card reads to me. The typing just throws me, it seems like just a fish to me.

Profane Puzzler3BB
Creature - Sphinx (R)
Flying
When Profane Puzzler enters the battlefield, search your library for three cards with different names and reveal them. Target opponent chooses one of those cards. Put that card into your hand and the others into your graveyard, then shuffle your library. "What riddle has three answers, all of them wrong?"
3/3
Putting the Sphinx into black is a good decision. I think this card is close to being perfect. It reminds me of a cheaper rune-scarred demon with a weaker search effect. My main issue is the added power from putting the rejects into the graveyard. But this is very black and may be fine, it hardly makes for an cheap reanimation search. I also like that the sphinx asks a question of the opponent.

Theelkspeaks This actual fits the challenge quite well and I like the card. If anything, I think a Red Angel isn't that far out there given Boros and some other appearances. Oh, this should be a rare, not mythic. It's a pretty low power level card as is.
SnowBlack1021 Neat card, the threshold on the third ability feels overly complex with everything else. Also does't feel like a demon.
Schiller On the small side of sphinxes. I like the card, but I think its deceptively powerful and would probably do better costing more on a bigger bodied creature.
doomfish: Really stall heavy card that grows rather quickly. You reference to three riddles in the flavor text seems to be an attempt to make sense of the mechanics, but I don't feel it translates well.
Koopa This is really an interesting idea, and it totally reads as a demon. Well done. (Change the name though. It's pretty weak)
RaikouRiderThe green angel of overrun! Seems costed right, though if anything a little uninspired/bland mechanically. You did do a good job of making a real character of the card.
drewdagreek - This is pretty interesting. I like how you've made a very un-red creature type fit nicely into red. I definitely think the reminder text is necessary, so good job including it. The card itself seems really strong, but balanced. It is definitely a mythic. It's not the most elegant card I've seen, but overall I like it.
Ninja Caterpie - I like this one quite a bit, but I think it should say "At the beginning of combat on your turn, untap each tapped creature you control". Assuming that change is made, I like this one a lot.
IcariiFA - This card seems like it could get huge quick, but the lack of evasion, or any way to protect itself makes it just fine IMO. I love the combination of the Hydra and Shade effects. Being able to double your P/T makes this seems like it should have green in it, but the Shade part makes it seem like it might be ok in monoblack. Overall this is pretty good stuff.
Theelkspeaks - Generally, exiling creatures instead of putting them into the graveyard is a white or black effect. I understand that cards like Anger of the Gods make this seem ok, but I'm not so sure it is. Its not an outright color pie break, but it is a bit of a bend. That aside, the card seems ok, but a little weak for a six drop mythic.
SnowBlack1021 - First of all, Forestwalk is no longer a thing. That said, this card seems pretty cool. It really makes its hay with the last ability, which is the highlight of the card IMO. This doesn't seem very Demony though. If it were me, I'd drop the first two abilities, give it trample, and make it an Elemental.
Schiller - This is Gamble with a body, which is cool, but not super original. I think this might be undercosted too.

Schiller: First of all, any Sphinx with random discard effect is not very creative IMO. Random discard is a flaw in MTG in my opinion as it increases the variable and frustration. Your card allows you to tutor for a card(it feels blackish), then discard at random makes this card unplayable, if you have no cards in hand and you topdeck this card and you just have a 3/3 flyer then.
doomfish: A sitting sphinx guarding there is the first idea came to my mind when i see the title. I like the idea but your card can grow pretty fast, especially with Hardened Scales or Winding Constrictor on battlefield, or against deck like white weenie.
Koopa: Not a fan of 'flip a coin' because I don't like randomness. The name is a bit silly. I don't think it is a card that will be played at all because of it comes in late and doesn't have a static ability.
RaikouRider: A permanent Overrun, strong, but seems fair because it is mythic and it is legendary.
willows: I personally like this card so much, it provides flexibility to build around it because it does not limit to only sorcery/instant, simple but neat. It is not going to be a competitive card, but I can see many people will build around it.
Itank: I suggest you do some research on proper wording, you don't have to be 100% correct. but at least make people understand easily. If I was a new player, and this is the first card I pull out from a booster pack, I would quit magic. The concept is good, but need a lot of tweaking, it feels greenish, and it shouldn't get counters when getting blocked because it is a GUARD hydra.
Guard Hydra XW
Creature-Hydra Rare
Vigilance
Guard Hydra enters play with X +1/+1 counters on it.
Guard Hydra can block as many creatures as it has +1/+1 counters.
At end of combat put an additional +1/+1 counter on Guard Hydra for each creature blocking or blocked by Guard Hydra.
0/0
Well +1/+1 counters and Hydra's are basically PB&J. The rate on this can get pretty absurd, especially for a white creature (green should have the biggest dudes). Still, the challenge demands this be a Hydra and I think you hit that on the head.

This card's rate is pretty crazy. It's likely a 6/6 for 6 with two built in Shocks that also grow it... Damn. The card feels like an upside down Hydra, which I would guess a Phyrexian Hydra would feel like.

This feels like such a cop-out for the challenge lol. The card does feel very Hydra-y in the same way that Phantasmal Bear feel like a green Bear and how Phantasmal Drake feels like a red Drake. The final ability feels kind of tacked on.
SnowBlack1021 – This feels like the exact reason Wizards stopped using Xwalk, because it completely hoses one (or in this case two) colors. This card has a serious case of feel-bads to play against.
Schiller – I really like this card, it feels like a cool take on red impulse draw, but even with the drawback of maybe-discarding the card you tutored, this might be a little overtuned.
doomfish – This is an interesting card that makes a strong blocker that quicly shifts into a powerful attacker, but when it starts attacking as a 3/10, that’s going to be very hard to kill, especially as it keeps getting bigger from there. It almost requires a destroy spell, and I can see plenty of scenarios where it’s anti-fun.
Koopa – This feels like the sort of randomness that’s antifun, especially where it easily devolves into “This is a 50/50 to play my game-winning card or take significant damage.” A little too swingy even if a cool idea.
RaikouRider – Overrun on a body, I can definitely see this being a very cool card, the main drawback is that it doesn’t feel like an angel at all.
willows – Definitely feels like a sphinx, and hard to repeatedly reactivate over and over, so hard to get too far out of control. Seems pretty cool and fits with red’s love of damaging instants/sorceries.
