Great design today contestants. Each of the designers took some challenging ingredients and really took some chances. Let's see which one's pay off. For the Uncommon round, the ingredients we had were:
Dinosaurs
ETB
Alka-Seltzer
I found that Contestant Void's card (Effervescent Deinonychus) was pleasing, but not entirely playable due to it's reliance on random factors. I would have preferred if it did not require the shuffle because that's both time consuming and takes some of the Johnny fun away when you could really maximize the usefulness of this card with mechanics like scry. The ETB effect is great and it definitely resembles a dinosaur, but the flavor text was gimmicky and if you want to be a Chopped Champion you'll need to do a bit better on that aspect and consider these cards WOTC print ready.
But apparently this bait couldn't be refused because Contestant Stoner couldn't get his head out of the Alka-Gutter either and also provided a bit of slap-stick in his flavor text and title. However, despite a sub-par flavor, the card, Bubbling Bactrosaurus, was well designed. I kind of felt it would have had better synergy with it's paired color, blue, if it only targeted creatures with out flying, which is also very red and very dinosaur. I think it was a missed opportunity. Overall, it was a well design card lacking a bit a convincing flavor.
Contestant FIM definitely gave us the best flavored design in Soothing Remedies and avoided the Alka-Seltzer trap, but the design feels white at least in some part. Maybe it should have been 2WG. I know green is #2 on the Indestructible totem and it probably is more balanced in green alone, so I can get behind it being green, but would have preferred a more green heavy cc. Flavor-Mechanic wise, I think what you designed was more preventative then curative. What I can't get behind is the lack of the dinosaur ingredient. Yes I see "Saurian" in there, but almost as an after thought. These ingredients need to be central to the design.
So now it's time we bid another one of you farewell. Once the decision is made it is final and you will be escorted off the set. Thank you designers.
Apparently, the Alka-Seltzer marketing team has done such an incredible job branding their product that two of every three people can't get the damn jingle out of their head. I thought there was ample design space for dinosaurs and the ETB effects would be a natural fit. I was personally, deeply saddened when the removed they dinosaur creature type and loved how they fit into the Ice Age set and should have fit into Coldsnap... for crying out loud they had Allosaurus Rider! It was a shame to see that one of the designers didn't take full advantage of that ingredient. It was interesting to see different interpretations of Alka-Seltzer mechanics, which I think all the designers did a good job at. However, in the end one of the cards didn't measure up to the others and the designer won't be moving on to the finals.
Contestant FIM you are chopped. The card was well-designed, but maybe a bit too splashable. Like was the last card that got chopped, it felt rushed. Most of all there was a lack of a significant dinosaur ingredient and for that reason, your card is chopped. Thanks for participating and best of luck to you in your future endeavors.
You may say a few words to your competitors before you are escorted out.
Oh, man! I feel like I've passed both challenges thus far by the skin'a my Brooklyn teef, which are obviously much tougher than normal teef. If top chefs (EDITOR'S NOTE: Please redact the name of a competing program in the final cut) like Raptorchan and Fortuna couldn't hack it, what chance have I got?
Legendary! Definitely puts one in mind of a fun, splashy, rare. And possibly means I should make something Commander-worthy.
Reflection type! Outside of Aurora of Emrakul, Reflections are tokens. So I feel justified in making something that produces those.
Stem cells! A revolutionary medical technology but little-tested and controversial among conservative circles. I believe in more stem cell research, but in a fantasy setting experimenting with things like that is mad science territory, and definitely comes with its risks... I think Phyrexian Processor might be a fun thing to homage here.
Now, who in Magic is associated with Reflections? Well... Riku of Two Reflections is! I always liked his card and I think a "corrupted" version of him would be an interesting take on the character... What if this version is actually himself a copy of the original Riku, and that's reflected (HEH!) on his typeline?
Didn't realize until now that mythic IS allowed. Riku deserves mythicicity!

First of all contestants, congratulations on making it this far in our first episode of CHOPPED: Card Creation Edition. You are our first two finalists ever! So Designer Stoner, Designer Void, you were given Legendary, Reflection and Stem Cells to create your Rare or Mythic cards. I like that you both went Mythic because that really allows you to flex your creative muscles a bit.
Designer Void, you gave us Riku of Marrowclones. Man, a four color CC and a pretty epic dark side Riku. I love the Marrowclones surname, I want to know more about them in the future. I like the idea and think this is a super sexy commander, but for anything else, I feel like the body is small for what you pay. He is easily beatable with a Pyroclasm or any of it's renditions.
And finally, Designer Stoner, you made Kuzud, the Ghostly Vine. My knee jerk reaction was, shouldn't this be Kudzu?, I think the similarity was too close. Design wise, I really liked this card. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but phasing will cause the tokens to cease to exist when they phase out. So when it is most likely to receive damage, during the combat phase, a copy is created which will only last long enough to block and if it does receive damage blocking, the copy will still disappear when it phases. I could see this being a cool combo piece for some decks, but I don't think it will create this army of plant monsters that your flavor text portrays. Additionally, the legend rule will cause this whole card to self destruct if something is damaged twice in the same turn.
Both designers excelled during this contest and there were a few issues with each of the final cards, but in the end the Legend Rule was the achilles heel of Designer Stoner's creation and for that reason Designer Stoner is CHOPPED.
Congrats to our Champion and stay tuned for another episode of CHOPPED: Card Creation Edition!
