Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!
Theme
It's December, a time for nostalgia and getting back together with old friends and long-missed family. This means that throughout the month, we'll be doing challenges themed around Magic story settings we haven't seen in a while. Next comes an unusual plane that's unique in the Multiverse for several reasons. This would be Shadowmoor, the dark opposite side of Lorwyn that's revealed by the Aurora.
Shadowmoor and Eventide emphasized hybrid mana, using hybrid costs as their exclusive use of multicolor, sometimes pushing the boundaries of what hybrid was capable of, and also contained some of the strangest Magic creatures ever printed, Eventide especially. Challenge
Design a Shadowmoor or Eventide-flavored card with hybrid mana in its mana cost.
Hybrid can be either traditional "two-color" hybrid or "monohybrid." Phyrexian mana is disallowed.
Make sure to include a rarity.
Stay tuned for November's CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for December's CCL!
Your submissions are due Sunday, December 11, 23:59 EST.
Please get in your round 1 critiques! It’s not difficult, and doing so will net you additional points! If you finish in the top 8 among participants in the first two rounds, you will advance to the Top 8.

These should really be two different abilities. Not only is it just good templating, it also means I'm not left looking at your card asking "What do these abilities have in common". It reminds me of a Ravnica guildmage. The abilities are a little bleedy - I would be happier if one cost 1B and the other 1R.
Wisptether1
Sorcery {R}
Put target creature card from an opponent's graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It gains persist. (When that creature dies, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)
Interesting form of reanimation with a drawback. Normally, killing a reanimated creature feels kind of bad - here, it gets your creature back. I wonder if this could've even cost 2, given the anti-value if the creature gets removed.
Noggle Hoarder2(U/R)(U/R)
Creature — Noggle Rogue (R)
When Noggle Hoarder dies, target opponent gains control of target permanent you control. Noggles will take anything they can get their hands on. But be wary — often it’s absolute junk. 3/3
This really needs to be optional. It's not an amazing ability in the first place, since it's death triggered, and it's on a mediocre body - having to give away a land or a creature if your donate target goes away is just awful. Leaving the ability mandatory, you could have been a lot more aggressive with the body - 4/3 flier, maybe, tat donates a nonland permanent?
Fallen Exemplar4(U/B)(U/B)(U/B)(U/B)
Creature - Elemental Horror (M)
Flying
Whenever a player cast a creature spell, counter that spell. Then put a number of -1/-1 counters equal to that spell's converted mana cost on Fallen Exemplar. Too savage to remember what the aurora had taken, it feasted on enemies and kin alike desperate for what it was missing.
10/10
This is hard for me to judge. It's usually going to swallow at least two creatures, and if your opponent can't deal with it it will kill quick. I really don't like the kind of play experiences this suggests - it seems like it would be really awful to play against unless you have applicable removal ready, and I don't think it offers enough when you're playing it to counterbalance that.
Ghastlord’s Insight(U/B)
Sorcery (U)
Draw a card if U was spent to cast Ghastlord’s Insight. Each opponent discard cards equal the number of card you draw this turn if B was spent to cast Ghastlord’s Insight. (Do both if UB was spent.)
I think this needs to be rare. The two-spells hybrid thing goes fine at lower rarities, but the twist of putting it on a CMC 1 card seems to demand rare. Most of the business of this card is in the black half, which I don't like much. It's potentially an absurdly strong discard spell in the right deck for just one mana, which I also don't like much - following up Divination with this makes your opponent discard 3! I think this design really wants to be a small fuse card rather than using this mechanic - a cantrip fused to an anticantrip would work fine.
Sootscar Mentor
Creature — Elemental Shaman (R)
Wither
Red creatures you control and black creatures you control have wither.
3/2
I had to check to make sure this didn't already exist, so good job on that front. However, it does almost exist - it's just Corrosive Mentor extended into red, which comes off pretty oddly.

10/10
I can’t like this card. It slows the game down considerably, discouraging players from casting creatures (which is central to playing Magic). Yes, it’s a way to kill of a 10/10, but at the expense of likely discarding three or four creature cards. Unless you’re playing a graveyard deck, that won’t sit particularly well.
One blue mana to draw a card isn’t terribly exiting, unless you’re running a prowess deck, which is not a mechanic in these sets. It feels quite strong for one mana. I think the black ability is stronger than the blue (the blue effect is a little underwhelming), but what I don’t understand is why you could do both when it’s a one mana spell? When could you ever be doing both? All of the “do both” cards cost more than one mana or have X in them. Bump this up 1 and it would at least satisfy the rules text.
Sootscar Mentor
Creature — Elemental Shaman (R)
Wither
Red creatures you control and black creatures you control have wither.
3/2
This kind of card works, wither is both black and red. However, it’s underwhelming for a rare in my opinion. We already have a card, Everlasting Torment, that does this kind of effect, which feels much more exciting in comparison. But, I do feel like if someone slipped it in to a Shadowmoor or Eventide booster pack, I’d have no idea.
Wilt-Leaf Scout
Creature — Elf Scout (U)
Nonbasic landwalk
, : Untap each other creature you control.
1/4
The untap mechanic was very specific to Eventide. We had a few cycles of untap cards, and oddly, no green-white ones. This kind of feels like a missing card to me. Could this be a little too powerful as an uncommon? I would say the landwalk here might feel slightly out of place for a 1/4, but then again, green never had large landwalking creatures anyway. Still, the second ability feels spot on. Bravo!
Blessed Selkie(G/U)(G/U)
Creature - Merfolk (Rare) t: Another target creature you control gains hexproof until end of turn. "The blessings of mother-nature and father-sea are for everyone to share."
2/2
In a way, it’s a bit underwhelming. On the other hand, it’s never been done before. Really it’s a Mother of Runes card, but it certainly fits and feels Green-Blue. I could see this having been printed in this block. Good job.
Twilight Charm (Common) 1(W/B)
Instant
Choose one —
Exile target card from a graveyard.
Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
Target creature you control gains protection from multicolored until end of turn.
Here is where I’m torn. I think it would be fun to have charms in either set. But there weren’t any charms in the set. And although the block did care about colors, it didn’t distinguish colored versus multicolored (yes, Enemy of the Guildpact uses the ability, from the set Dissension). Hybrid cards technically should work in either color, but Wizards did cheat a little on a few cards. I feel like maybe there could be a few effects in here that go both ways so as to distinguish this from a WB card.
Gwyllion's Reap2(W/B)(W/B)
Sorcery (R)
Destroy all creatures with power 3 or less if B was spent to cast Gwyllion's Reap and destroy all creatures with power 4 or greater if W was spent to cast Gwyllion's Reap. (Do both if WB was spent.) "As soon as you hear a gwyllion scream turn your eyes away from them, for it means they're about to feed."
—The Book of Kith and Kin
Seems fine and fair. Good use of the established mechanics and flavor of the block, but doesn't do anything unexpected or combine abilities in new interactions. Nothing wrong with that. It's a good design, not a fantastic one.
Twilight Charm (Common) 1(W/B)
Instant
Choose one -
Exile target card from a graveyard.
Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
Target creature you control gains protection from multicolored until end of turn.
Fudges the color pie a little, but not in ways that haven't been done before. Another good but not amazing design. However, this one has evergreen flavor and doesn't inherently read as shadowmoor.
Blessed Selkie(G/U)(G/U)
Creature - Merfolk (Rare) t: Another target creature you control gains hexproof until end of turn. "The blessings of mother-nature and father-sea are for everyone to share."
2/2
Is this card strong? Sure. But it feels like an uncommon. I'd be pretty unhappy pulling this as a rare. Also, bland. Not up to snuff from you.
Wilt-Leaf Scout
Creature — Elf Scout (U)
Nonbasic landwalk
, : Untap each other creature you control.
1/4
This card is quirky, takes advantage of hybrid mana design space in subtle ways, and really has that oddness I expect from something from shadowmoor. Nonbasic landwalk seems a little off for white if anything, but otherwise a good job here.
Sootscar Mentor
Creature — Elemental Shaman (R)
Wither
Red creatures you control and black creatures you control have wither.
3/2
Sure this is all fine and good. Its another design that works, but doesn't push any boundaries. Also another example of a card that I feel would be better worked as an uncommon.
Well, you took away the choice to do both by making it a 1CC spell (until future magic arrives with mixed/half mana). I have mixed feeligns about that. It cheapens the spell and requires a choice, but part of the appeal of these type of cards is feeling good/clever/succesful if you can trigger both effects. A good combination of abilities none-the-less.
1: Flatline
2: StonerOfKruphix
3: mirrodin71
I felt there were a lot of safe, bland entries this round. I don't reward that. Flatline is a clear winner for me, with a distant second and third place. I gave StonerOfKruphix the edge due to the appeal of doing both effects or choosing one or the other intentionally to target specific creatures.
Jeez! Somehow I missed the fact that judging even started.
Edit: Well, I just saw that I was supposed to judge the cards above my name. I guess I'll try to redo them tomorrow night. I suppose there's no reason to delete these since I worked on them.....
willows - This is pretty cool. Not super inventive, but I could've seen it in Shadowmoor. Could use some flavor text.
mirrodin71 - I really liked the "do both" cards from Shadowmoor block, but the effect seems weird (and totally unnecessary) on a 1 CMC card since you can't actually do both. This should be a "choose one" card.
IcariiFA - This is a really cool effect, but for nine mana I would generally want something that has an immediate effect on the board, or at least is really difficult to deal with. I think I would just make this count any spell, even if you would need to bump up the CMC some, or reduce the P/T. Excellent flavor for the block, easily the best in my bracket.
proudawesome - This seems pretty weak to me. I've never been a big Donate fan, and this seems worse than Harmless Offering to me since it's on a death trigger.
RaikouRider - Huh, this is a pretty neat card. It reminds a little bit of Treacherous Pit-Dweller. I like that in this case the opponent ends up with a lesser creature. I really like this card a lot. I wonder if ti could even cost ?
scrad_the_wanderer - I like the name of this one. The card seems kinda meh though, and giving the haste ability to monoblack seems like a bleed to me.
1st: RaikouRider
2nd: IcariiFA
3rd: willows
Let's try this again. These were a little rushed....
netn10 - Huh. I'm not sure this needs to be a rare considering there are three drops that give all of your creatures of a certain type hexproof. I would drop the toughness or power and this thing and make it an UC.
Legend - This seems like a pretty decent, although not very exciting charm. The last ability seems like it should be in Ravnica to me. The fact that you link a Ravnica card only helps to reinforce this feeling.
StonerOfKruphix - I voted for this in the DCC. I like it.
shinike1729 - This is a pretty cool take on an old ability. The trample feels a bit out of place, although all colors can have trample so it's probably fine. I like this card. Good work.
FortunalmperatixMundi - This card seems pretty cool. I mighta bumped it's CMC up one and made it a 1/3, but I like it how it is just fine.

This card is probably too confusing as you can't normally pay UB. It's really good if you somehow spend UB, but I don't want to play Thalia, Guardian of Thraben in an Esper deck.

Wilt-Lead Stalwart 2
Creature - Elf Knight (R)
As long as Wilt-leaf Stalwart is tapped, it has indestructible.
2/3
These should really be two different abilities. Not only is it just good templating, it also means I'm not left looking at your card asking "What do these abilities have in common". It reminds me of a Ravnica guildmage. The abilities are a little bleedy - I would be happier if one cost 1B and the other 1R.
Interesting form of reanimation with a drawback. Normally, killing a reanimated creature feels kind of bad - here, it gets your creature back. I wonder if this could've even cost 2, given the anti-value if the creature gets removed.
This is hard for me to judge. It's usually going to swallow at least two creatures, and if your opponent can't deal with it it will kill quick. I really don't like the kind of play experiences this suggests - it seems like it would be really awful to play against unless you have applicable removal ready, and I don't think it offers enough when you're playing it to counterbalance that.
I had to check to make sure this didn't already exist, so good job on that front. However, it does almost exist - it's just Corrosive Mentor extended into red, which comes off pretty oddly.

Bravo!
In a way, it’s a bit underwhelming. On the other hand, it’s never been done before. Really it’s a Mother of Runes card, but it certainly fits and feels Green-Blue. I could see this having been printed in this block. Good job.

I felt there were a lot of safe, bland entries this round. I don't reward that. Flatline is a clear winner for me, with a distant second and third place. I gave StonerOfKruphix the edge due to the appeal of doing both effects or choosing one or the other intentionally to target specific creatures.
Edit: Well, I just saw that I was supposed to judge the cards above my name. I guess I'll try to redo them tomorrow night. I suppose there's no reason to delete these since I worked on them.....
mirrodin71 - I really liked the "do both" cards from Shadowmoor block, but the effect seems weird (and totally unnecessary) on a 1 CMC card since you can't actually do both.

Let's try this again. These were a little rushed....

This card is probably too confusing as you can't normally pay UB. It's really good if you somehow spend UB, but I don't want to play Thalia, Guardian of Thraben in an Esper deck.
Splashy. Countering is a bend for black, but I think it's fine because black can kill creatures easily.
This is harder to use than Donate/Harmless Offering as a combo card, and when not going for combo, this is just terrible.
It's a really interesting idea to persist as a drawback. How this is good depends on the environment, but I like this card very much.
Nice, but looks too similar to Rix Maadi Guildmage
Small Ith, High Arcanist. I'm a little concerned about this in limited.
