Teferi collapsed to the ground, his Planeswalker Spark as wounded as he was. He knew it would be quite some time before he could planeswalk again, for fear of pushing his spark to the breaking point. He looked around, his eyes surveying the unfamiliar plane. He realized that he was in a shady alley, with clamorous commotion permeating the streets just outside it. No matter how far he looked, in fact, he saw nothing but streets and buildings, vendors and pedestrians. Teferi closed him eyes and concentrated, trying to connect the dots and realize what plane he was temporarily trapped on. While he attempted to conjure his memory, three lurking goblins crept towards him, attempting to apprehend him with far more stealth than they possessed. Teferi's eyes snapped open instantly, his staff raised and brow furrowed. So this is the welcoming this plane has to offer... he surmised, irritated at their foolishness and amused at their challenge. The goblins paused for a moment, then started running towards him, redoubled at the prospect of robbing a potentially wealthy mage. Unfortunately for the goblins, they were not bright enough to connect the dots and realize that they were attempting to assault one of the most powerful magi in the multiverse. Teferi prepared a powerful spell, then paused. Surely he did not want to attract too much attention while his spark was recovering. Instead, he chose a spell that would attract less attention...
Main Challenge: Design an instant or sorcery card that would fit into Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, or Dragon's Maze contextually. It would be best to use magic that would make sense on this plane, Teferi realized.
Subchallenge 1: Your card has a converted mana cost of three or less.A powerful spell could attract the wrong kind of attention. The smaller, the better, Teferi concluded. Subchallenge 2: Your card has twenty words of rules text or less.Utilizing an overly complex spell would probably not be in my best interests, Teferi surmised.
Please message me about any questions you might have about the challenges. Other than that, have fun, and good luck!
Main Challenge: To fit in contextually means that the card would feel like a natural fit in that particular set. This means that your card must not only feel in place flavorfully, but it must also adhere to the mechanics of that set (for instance, a card with Hellbent would not work in Return to Ravnica, but a card with Unleash would) and the themes of that set as well (for example, Reclusive Artificer would not fit thematically into Ravnica even if it was flavored as an Izzet card, due to the artifact mechanic being out of place.) Essentially, the challenge asks this: if you opened a pack of Return to Ravnica and saw your card inside it, would it make sense there? Would it draft well with the other cards? Is its power level in line with that of the set in question?
Subchallenge 2: Rules text includes any non-reminder, non-flavor text in the main text box of the card. It does not include the card's name.
Design Deadline: All submissions are to be final and submitted by December 6th 23:59 EST
Judging Deadline: All Judgements are to be final and completed by December 9th10th 23:59 EST
Design - (X/3) Appeal: Do the different player psychographics (Timmy/Johhny/Spike) have a use for the card? (X/3) Elegance: Is the card easily understandable at a glance? Do all the flavor and mechanics combined as a whole make sense?
Development - (X/3) Viability: How well does the card fit into the color wheel? Does it break or bend the rules of the game? Is it the appropriate rarity? (X/3) Balance: Does the card have a power level appropriate for contemporary constructed/limited environments without breaking them? Does it play well in casual and multiplayer formats? Does it create or fit into a deck/archetype? Does it create an oppressive environment?
Creativity - (X/3) Uniqueness: Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel “fresh”? (X/3) Flavor: Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?
Polish - (X/3) Quality: Points deducted for incorrect spelling, grammar, and templating. (X/2) *Main Challenge: Was the main challenge satisfied? Was it approached in a unique or interesting way? Does the card fit the intent of the challenge? (X/2) Subchallenges: One point awarded per satisfied subchallenge condition.
Total: X/25
*An entry with 0 points here is subject to disqualification.
A reminder to everyone: In the MCC, putting rarity on cards is mandatory! If you don't put a rarity on your card, expect huge deductions in both Viability AND Quality.
Also, you should format your text cards accordingly to the forum rules (see the "this formatting looks best" spoiler in the linked OP). Again, expect deductions in Quality otherwise.
I assume this passes the second sub-challenge, since flavor text is not rules text. Your clarification makes it less clear.
