Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!
Theme
With the introduction of Kaladesh, we once again have an artifact set! Inventions, vehicles, and the energy surrounding them. Automatons, constructs, thopters, mechanical animals and others have been brought to life. This week, you’ll be apprenticing, creating your own artifact creature that could have easily been found at the Inventors’ Fair!
Challenge
Design an artifact creature card invention that is not a Vehicle that one might find at an inventor’s fair in Kaladesh.
Create a new artifact creature
It should feel like an invention you might find in Kaldesh
It may not be a Vehicle
It may not have any other card types (such as enchantment or land)
Please place a rarity for your new card: (C for Common, U for Uncommon, R for Rare, or M for Mythic Rare)
Tournament legal cards only
No additional card types — it must be an “Artifact Creature”, though it can 0 or more subtypes as you like
Stay tuned for October’s CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for November’s CCL!
Your submissions are due Monday, November 7, 23:59 CDT.
After the submission deadline, I will update the thread and you will help judge your peers’ entries. It’s not difficult, and doing so will net you additional points! If you finish in the top 8 among participants in the first two rounds, you will advance to the Top 8.
Schedule
Round 1 — Open to Everyone (November 1st–7th)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (November 8th–12th)
Rounds 1 and 2 Critiques (Due November 15th 16th)
Top 8 — Open to top 8 finishers (November 17th–November 19th)
Top 8 Critiques (Due November 22nd)
Top 4 — Open to top 4 finishers from last round (November 23rd–25th)
Top 4 Critiques (Due November 28th)
Final (End of month)
After some discussion with the CCL organizers, we are making some slight changes to the schedule.
We’ve been historically running into a scheduling problem where there just isn’t enough time to complete a CCL in a month. We’ve also been noticing that the third week has seen low participation, likely as people see they are no longer in the hunt for a Top 4 spot, or assuming it’s only for people who have finished high in the first two rounds. What we are changing is making the third round really matter, by re-instituting the Top 8, to get more people interested in later rounds, and basically shortening up the schedule a bit.
Consider this an experiment, but one that might just stay.
+3 points for each First Place +2 points for each Second Place +1 point for each Third Place
+1 bonus point for posting critiques +1 bonus point for posting a Top 3 ranking
The points received by each player will be added up and calculated as a percentage of the maximum points that player could have obtained, which are given by 3 ×(number of critiques received)+ 2.
The percentages will then be ordered in decreasing order and that will be the standings for the round.
The percentages from the first three rounds will be added up at the end of Round 3 to determine the Top 4 or 8, depending on the number of entrants. 2 bonus points will be awarded to anyone who voted in August’s final poll.
The same system will be used for the final round.
As usual, the final winner will be determined by a public poll.
Critiques It’s time for your critiques!
Critique the cards of the six people immediately below your name, looping to the top of the list as necessary. Then, among those six, rank what you feel are the top three. (Ranking your top 3 gets you a point, and completing critiques gets you another point.)
Critiques are technically optional, but they’re one of the easiest ways to get points. And you don’t have to write very much either!
An easy way to get the six cards you are critiquing in a post is to use the Multi-quote button for each submission. Start with the first person who is below your name, look for their post, and click on the Multi-quote button. Then continue down the list. Click Reply when you have all six queued up.
After that, briefly write about what you like and don’t like on those cards. It’s totally okay to edit this in more than one sitting. Feel free to revise this as much as you like before the deadline.
You’ll also then rank them with your own “top 3.” (Usually people will wrap the critiques and the top 3 into separate spoiler tags, but however you would like to do it all is fine.)
Please remember to judge your entries in accordance to the round’s requirements.
You have until Wednesday, November 15th 16th 23:59 CST for all critiques.

JDAEnzio - a tricky card. not bad i guess if you can go wide very fast (ideally through Fabricate)
Rosy Dumplings - there may come a day when WotC won't mind obsoleting Birds of Paradise, but not any time soon.
void_nothing - a little bland, but solid, printable, and playable
mirrodin71 - completely busted and has a very situation/niche and downright strange "drawback"
RaikouRider - such a nice timmy energy card. i love it! i hope to see something like this in EV
Flatline - energy triski. very flexible. i like it very much! I also hope to see something like this in EV
mirrodin71 - Definitely glad this has no energy generation ability because the tutoring is already probably way too efficient. Colored artifacts are absent except for Gearhulks on Kaladesh, and why does this even have the "upkeep cost"?
RaikouRider - Deathtouch is pretty redundant on a 5/5, and R&D doesn't want to encourage energy hoarding. All in all pretty win-more and unexciting.
Flatline - This looks maybe abusable? There are probably infinite combos to be had here, like with, uh, Fabrication Module, which is two cards for infinite power and toughness and infinite energy.
drewdagreek - Not too strong, flavor's great, would be cool to have in Kaladesh block Limited. Might be slightly odd on a flavor basis for a Kaladeshi to make a fake Gremlin, considering how much of a problem they can be, but hey.
StonerOfKruphix - Good stuff! Would be funny to use with an expensive, indestructible artifact of your own. Generally a good finisher, despite - again - the colored artifact issue.
Forestsguy - Nice Myr Adapter/Armory Automaton/Bludgeon Brawl riff. Hard to evaluate since it's so wacky. And... why the C symbol?
Legend - Autonomous Armor: Straightfoward, clean execution of an iconic concept.
JDAEnzio - Aradara Attendant: Interesting synergies and anti-synergies, but ultimately probably too powerful in rush/swarm decks that can reliably produce more bodies than their opponents.
Rosy Dumplings - Filigree Songbird: A nice shoutout to Birds of Paradise, but only borderline printable these days, as that's very good acceleration for any color deck.
void_nothing - Aether-Ant Swarm: Definitely Kaladesh flavor wise, and seems perfectly printable, but not exciting.
mirrodin71 - Crop's Dryad: Use of color on artifacts isn't much of a Kaladesh thing yet, but that could change with the next set. The ability is weird and doesn't make sense, though.
RaikouRider - Aetheric Enigma: Nice limited-bomb rare that uses energy counters in a way not yet used, but reasonable.
Jimmy Groove: Pretty Parasitic, but it does its job well and works with equipment too. I like it!
Legend: The card itself is fine (except for the typo in the vigilence reminder text), but it evokes a living weapon-esque feel which does not translate well to kaladesh, in my opinion. It is also very similar to Haunted Plate Mail.
JDAenzio: What deck would want this card? Aggressive decks would maybe want to side thisc in againt creatureless control, but that's it. This is colorless, but creatures have become efficient enough that I think this could have been a little bit better.
Rosy dumplings: Simple, elegant, powerful, and nostlagic. I love it!
Void_Nothing: This card seems kinda boring to me. Sure, it's an enabler, but it's not a particularly powerful one and there are cards in the set that give you less energy for a significantly more powerful effect (Aethertorch Renegade comes to mind.)
mirrodin71: The first ability is almost completely blank, and this probably shouldn't have been colored and limited the search ability to once each turn. Kaladesh has many artifact that use colored effects, and even do so pretty efficiently, like Filigree Familiar which could have easily been a blue/white gold card.
Zewardo, The United Masterpiece2GUUR
Legendary Artifact Creature - Construct (Mythic)
Flying, trample, haste 1GU: Target artifact gains hexproof until end of turn. 1UR: Copy target spell or ability targeting an artifact. Choose Zewardo for the copy. After three years of working together, Saheeli Rai and Rashmi published to the Fair one of most awe-inspiring design to be ever seen on Kaladesh.
6/6
This card is too complicated for my taste. I believe the 1UR ability is meant to be "Choose Zewardo for the target of the copy", but there are many spells that could target an artifact and can't target this.
Lifecrafter's Masterpiece4
Artifact Creature - Shapeshifter (R)
As Lifecrafter's Masterpiece enters the battlefield, choose a creature. If you do, Lifecrafter's Masterpiece's power becomes equal to that creature's power and its toughness becomes equal to that creature's toughness.
Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, you may have Lifecrafter's Masterpiece's power become equal to that creature's power and its toughness become equal to that creature's toughness. This array of metal strands and wires can sculpt itself to mimic any living thing in such astounding detail that even the copied creatures learn something about themselves.

The wording can be better (See Eldrazi Mimic), but good design.
Intrepid Autopilot2
Artifact Creature - Construct Pilot (R) T: Target Vehicle becomes a creature until end of turn. It gains haste and gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is Intrepid Autopilot's power.
Whenever you cast an Equipment or Vehicle spell, scry 1. "That little autopilot and I have been through a lot together."
- Depala, Pilot Exemplar
1/1
Nice pilot. What I don't like is that +X/+X makes you want to pump this, but it makes the fact that this can "crew" any Vehicle meaningless. Also, you can pump the Vehicle anyway. Is it intentional that this can crew an opponent's vehicle to remove it?
Autonomous Armor (Uncommon) 4
Artifact Creature - Construct
2/4
Vigilance (Attacking doesn't cause this creature to attack.) 4: Autonomous Armor becomes an Equipment with "Equipped creature gets +2/+4 and has vigilance." Attach it to target creature you control. It becomes a creature again if it's not attached to a creature. Activate this ability only at any time you could cast a sorcery.
Nice design. The funny part is "Attacking doesn't cause this creature to attack."
Aradara Attendant1
Artifact Creature - Construct (U)
Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, its controller gains 1 life. The latest innovation in automated railway staff has increased customer satisfaction manyfold.
2/1
This card is very interesting, development-wise. First, everyone would agree that a 2/1 for 1 needs a drawback. This ability is symmetrical on paper, but the deck with this card will probably suffer more. It takes FFL to ultimately decide whether this card is fine or not, but I really like the idea.

This card is very nostalgic. The problem is this is way too powerful for standard. Hedron Crawler gains flying and it's 1 LIGHTER? Seriously?

drewdagreek - Not too strong, flavor's great, would be cool to have in Kaladesh block Limited.

2: Jimmy groove
1: Rosy Dumplings
This card is too complicated for my taste. I believe the 1UR ability is meant to be "Choose Zewardo for the target of the copy", but there are many spells that could target an artifact and can't target this.
The wording can be better (See Eldrazi Mimic), but good design.
Nice pilot. What I don't like is that +X/+X makes you want to pump this, but it makes the fact that this can "crew" any Vehicle meaningless. Also, you can pump the Vehicle anyway. Is it intentional that this can crew an opponent's vehicle to remove it?
Nice design. The funny part is "Attacking doesn't cause this creature to attack."
Seriously?
