Welcome to the Card Creation League! In the first two rounds, entry is free for anyone. Come join us!
Even if you did not submit a card in the first round, you are not penalized. You can still participate in this round and can advance.
Theme
Tokens have been around since the very first Magic set. Wizards has so many different kinds of tokens, from Devil tokens to Squirrel tokens, so many more. This week, you’ll be designing your own card that adds tokens onto the battlefield!
Challenge
Design a non-creature card that creates creature tokens.
Create a new non-creature spell
It must create one or more creature tokens when it is cast, or through an ability (such as activated or triggered) on the card
Please place a rarity for your new card: (C for Common, U for Uncommon, R for Rare, or M for Mythic Rare)
Tournament legal cards only
Can’t be a creature
Can’t be a token; it needs to be a land or spell that creates tokens
CCC Anyone who votes in September’s final poll receives 2 bonus points for October’s CCL! CCC
Your submissions are due Thursday, October 12 13, 23:59 CDT.(My mistake, so I’ll give you an extra day.)
Schedule
Round 1 — Open to Everyone (October 1st–6th)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (October 7th–12th)
Rounds 1 and 2 Critiques (Due October 16th)
Top 8 — Open to top 8 finishers (October 17th–October 19th)
Top 8 Critiques (Due October 23rd)
Top 4 — Open to top 4 finishers from last round (October 24th–26th)
Top 4 Critiques (Due October 29th)
Final (End of month)
After some discussion with the CCL organizers, we are making some slight changes to the schedule.
We’ve been historically running into a scheduling problem where there just isn’t enough time to complete a CCL in a month. We’ve also been noticing that the third week has seen low participation, likely as people see they are no longer in the hunt for a Top 4 spot, or assuming it’s only for people who have finished high in the first two rounds. What we are changing is making the third round really matter, by re-instituting the Top 8, to get more people interested in later rounds, and basically shortening up the schedule a bit.
Consider this an experiment, but one that might just stay.
+3 points for each First Place +2 points for each Second Place +1 point for each Third Place
+1 bonus point for posting critiques +1 bonus point for posting a Top 3 ranking
The points received by each player will be added up and calculated as a percentage of the maximum points that player could have obtained, which are given by 3 ×(number of critiques received)+ 2.
The percentages will then be ordered in decreasing order and that will be the standings for the round.
The percentages from the first three rounds will be added up at the end of Round 3 to determine the Top 4 or 8, depending on the number of entrants. 2 bonus points will be awarded to anyone who voted in August’s final poll.
The same system will be used for the final round.
As usual, the final winner will be determined by a public poll.
Critiques It’s time for your critiques!
Critique the cards of the six people immediately below your name, looping to the top of the list as necessary. Then, among those six, rank what you feel are the top three. (Ranking your top 3 gets you a point, and completing critiques gets you another point.)
Critiques are technically optional, but they’re one of the easiest ways to get points. And you don’t have to write very much either!
An easy way to get the six cards you are critiquing in a post is to use the Multi-quote button for each submission. Start with the first person who is below your name, look for their post, and click on the Multi-quote button. Then continue down the list. Click Reply when you have all six queued up.
After that, briefly write about what you like and don’t like on those cards. It’s totally okay to edit this in more than one sitting. Feel free to revise this as much as you like before the deadline.
You’ll also then rank them with your own “top 3.” (Usually people will wrap the critiques and the top 3 into separate spoiler tags, but however you would like to do it all is fine.)
You have until Sunday, October 16th 23:59 CDT for all critiques.

Legend
Some errors in the format of the letter {cardname, mana} {type-supertype, rarity}. Interesting skill, I think only serious rarity uncomun if I rely on that a similar card, which is "gorgon mask".
netn10
simple, but offers nothing new as there are many cards cost X and create tokens.
Flintlock
Good concept, balanced. I would like a lot more if the counter was always an artifact die instead of upkeep.
Jimmy Groove
I understand the flavor, basically it is a food pyramid, which I do not like / is convinced that a hydra kills an Dragron. Maybe if it were legendary.
drewdagreek
quite creative, make it difficult for a creature leaves play, skill developed properly activated. Balanced in my opinion
Raptorchan
Tribal deck reinforcement (men); fortunately not many, otherwise it would be very OP.
void_nothing
I feel that their identity is more "w / g" that "r / w", by theme of tokens and bonuses
Flatline
OP whereas attacked in turn 4 with Geist of Saint Traft (+11 damage on turn 4) and has no other creatures with exalted.
Legend
Balanceada a mi criterio
Raptorchan
netn10 - pretty good. the flavor doesn't quite connect. Maybe it would help if the tokens were colorless and the dragon was also a construct. Also seems gratuitously pushed as an instant.
Flintlock - pretty creative especially for red. it should be an Aura with "enchant artifact".
Jimmy Groove - very creative. raw but I like it. Looks like fun.
Drewdagreek - Also creative. Could use some refinement. Good flavor.
raptorchan - simple and solid. Well balanced
Void_nothing - mechanically interesting. Maybe should say "non-Bear" instead of "nontoken"? I love the bear tribe. I even ran Bear tribal for a while. (I like underdog tribes.) Seems way out of color even in light of Bear's Companion.
Mirror’s Song2GU
Sorcery (R)
Create a token that’s a copy of target creature onto the battlefield.
Haunt (When this spell card is put into a graveyard after resolving, exile it haunting target creature.)
When the creature Mirror’s Song haunts dies, create a token that’s a copy of target creature onto the battlefield.
The wording of this is off and the flavor of a song haunting a creature is pretty weird. As for the effect, I think it's fine when it is cast but 'when a creature dies, copy it' is more B than G or U.
Hierarchy of Predation1RG
Enchantment (MR)
When Hierarchy of Predation enters the battlefield, create two 1/1 green Insect creature tokens.
Sacrifice an Insect, GG: Create a 3/3 green Beast creature token.
Sacrifice a Beast, 1RR: Create a 5/5 red Dragon creature token with flying.
Sacrifice a Dragon, 2RG: Create a 7/7 red and green Hydra creature token with trample and reach.
I think this is pretty much fine except that the flavor of a Hydra eating Dragons is weird. I'd have used one iconic or the other at the top, not both.
Airborne Pathogen (Common) UB
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has flying and deathtouch.
Embody 2UB(2UB, Reveal this card from your hand: Create a 1/1 colorless creature token, then attach this Aura to it. Embody only as a sorcery.)
This is pretty delightful and solidly in-color. good work.
Emulate the HuntgroundsXRR
Instant (Rare)
Choose one:
* Create X 1/1 Servo artifact creature tokens.
* Create an X/X Dragon artifact creature token with flying and trample. "To create the most awe-inspiring creations, one must seek to emulate the best inspiration nature can provide."
The flavor of this is off (since when do Servos go hunting?) but mechanically I buy it.
Nest of Saboteurs1RR
Artifact (R)
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a growth counter on Nest of Saboteurs, then sacrifice an artifact.
When Nest of Saboteurs leaves the battlefield, create three X/X red Gremlin creature tokens where X is the number of growth counters on Nest of Saboteurs. It soon became clear that there were few lines the 'New Renegades' wouldn't cross.
Flavor-wise, Saboteurs sound too sophisticated to be Gremlins. Also I'm concerned at the very high power level of this card.
Okhala, the Living Staff4
Legendary Artifact - Equipment (M)
Equip 2
Equipped gets +2/+2 and cannot be exiled nor returned to hands or libraries. GG, Sacrifice a forest: Create a 4/4 Legendary treefolk avatar token named Lhovar, the Unending and attach this equipment to it. Play this ability only when you could play a sorcery.
Wording here needs polishing. The effect is okay. I'm not excessively excited by a legendary that makes other legendaries but it's not unheard-of and it's a fair limiter to the ability to create 4/4s.
I could see Haunt in blue, but in green - not so much. This card could've as well been mono-U. Flavor-wise its fine, but the power level just seems a little bit too high. It should be CMC5, I think.
Nice flavor, but it's too "cute" imo. Also, double-G and double-R for the first and second activated abilities respectively looks a bit awkward, even if paying GG in turn four in a red-green deck shouldn't be a problem.
I think if this got printed, it would be an uncommon. "Living Weapon" for auras is not terribly creative, but makes sense - auras need this kind of ability way more than equipments.
Intoxicating Draught2U
Enchantment — Aura (U)
Enchant creature an opponent controls
Whenever enchanted creature attacks, create a 3/1 blue Elephant Illusion creature token with, "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it."
Basically a blue Pacifism, since the enchanted creature isn't going to attack very often, but I really like the "Fata Morgana" flavor here.
I'm not really feeling the flavor here. Power-wise, this seems pretty strong, especially at Instant speed. I think a spell like this is not impossible, but this card would've been "safer" and probably more realistic if it was a sorcery.
A solid build-around-me card with good flavor. I have a little trouble imagining 4/4 or 5/5 Gremlins though. They don't feel like they ever grow bigger than 3/3 (permanently). Having it create X 1/1 or 2/2 tokens would've been a better fit, I think.
Though it's cool that the Hydra has reach so that it can actually kill the dragon, I feel like it's a bit of a flavour fail that you can sacrifice something like Chancellor of the Tangle to make the dragon (implying that a 5/5 Flyer is somehow eating a 6/7 Reach). Regardless, the progress feels cool; almost a little like Figure of Destiny.
Took me a moment to realise where there's that additional set of effects on the equip. I feel like there's some horrible combo that works with it that lets you activate something infinite times, but I can't think of one off the top of my head. Otherwise, it's a pretty cool card.
Assemble the Vassals2WW
Sorcery (U)
Create a 2/2 white Knight creature token with vigilance, then create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token for each Knight you control. "The first virtue of noble is loyalty. The first virtue of squire is humility."
—Brago, King Eternal
Though the flavour text's english is a little broken, I find there to be something incredibly...evocative of 'You summon a knight, and all your knights bring their squires'. On its own, it's a little underpowered as a 2/2 vigialnce and 1/1, but if you make a knight tribal deck...
Bear-Rider StablesRW
Enchantment (R)
Whenever one or more nontoken creatures you control attack, you may pay 2. If you do, create a 2/2 green Bear creature token tapped and attacking. 1RW: Target nontoken attacking creature you control gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each attacking Bear you control.
Is there a particular reason why this makes bears? Bears are infamously green creatures and the effect itself is fairly generic. I get bear cavalry is a thing, but I think this would've faired far better if it fluffed as a soldier garrison or something similar. Or Kithkin, like with Militia's Pride.
Guiding Light
Enchantment (R)
Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, create a 4/4 white Angel creature token with flying that is tapped and attacking. Exile that token at end of combat. "Whenever you feel alone, know that I am by your side."
I feel like, WOTC ever decides to revisit Alara and doesn't completely rework the mechanics (or just brings back Exalted, really), this could potentially be a card that sees play. Geist of Saint Traft's effect was always really fun and flavourful, and there's something that just works about having a guardian angel when you attack alone.
Geothermal Surge3RG
Sorcery (R)
Create a 1/1 red Elemental creature token for each land you control. Creatures you control gain haste until the end of turn. "If the land moves, panic and run."
—Goblin tip for survival n.1587
There's been a lot of 'the land gets up and starts fighting' cards. I almost feel like the tokens should be exiled at the end of turn, but I think that's just because Chandra. Not really sure what to think of the design. It does seem like a powerful limited card, though.
As a man from the country of bear cavalry, I salute you, but this card is quite complex and has some color problems. Still better wording of first ability than Militia's Pride, though.
Pretty nice version of Invocation of Saint Traft - more expensive, but with upside (Exalted), but with downside (works only with creature that attacks alone), but can't be removed easy with enchanted creature.Looks surprisingly well balanced for me.
Geothermal Surge3RG
Sorcery (R)
Create a 1/1 red Elemental creature token for each land you control. Creatures you control gain haste until the end of turn. "If the land moves, panic and run."
—Goblin tip for survival n.1587
Simple and powerful but not broken spell - 5/5 among five bodies at least and can do more (depends on lands) for 5CMC. Feels more red than green, though.
Fertile SoilXGG
Sorcery (R)
Create X 0/1 plant creature tokens, then put a +1/+1 counter on each plant you control for each land card in your graveyard. Akoums vegetation grows very quickly on the volcanic ashes, only to be consumed shortly after by another eruption.
Nothing special without lands in the graveyard, but the more effective Dredge strategy you use, the more ugly it gets. Maybe it's a card than can be called balanced, but I'm not quite sure it is.
Intoxicating Draught2U
Enchantment — Aura (U)
Enchant creature an opponent controls
Whenever enchanted creature attacks, create a 3/1 blue Elephant Illusion creature token with, "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it."
When you are high, you can see illusory elephants. But other can see them as well. Thanks for idea, but this card looks like a mess for me.
Mirror’s Song2GU
Sorcery (R)
Create a token that’s a copy of target creature onto the battlefield.
Haunt (When this spell card is put into a graveyard after resolving, exile it haunting target creature.)
When the creature Mirror’s Song haunts dies, create a token that’s a copy of target creature onto the battlefield.
art by
Too bad that Wizards decided to drop Haunt (or at least move it to the bottom of the Storm Scale if MaRo was correct.) Just make it an Aura with "when enters" and "when dies" effects and everything will be fire.
Flatline - AKA You'll Never Swing Alone. I like exalted on enchantments and I've made similar designs in terms of the token creation in the past but this is probably undercosted. It presents an annoying beater to deal with besides the exalted bonus and is leagues better than the comparable Angelic Benediction.
StonerOfKruphix - Woof. Uh. Counting all the lands you control makes this a big boom. The haste just feels like overkill. Interesting in concept, probably undercosted at five mana. Add any given anthem effect and kill opponents with the wombo combo of your life, though, and that's just nice for Timmy/Johnny types.
soramaro - Great flavor. Hard-to-evaluate, mathy effect, but one that I like. I've always felt green should get the best cards that key off self-mill so blue and black have to link up with their enemy to really go nuts. Should it really be possible to get an army of pseudo-Terravores with an X-spell? Maybe not, but I sure like the proposition.
willows - This is clearly primarily a flavor card; it's probably overcosted in terms of it being a combo with forced attacks. I know the "Pink Elephants on Parade" are just Illusions but do they really need the spell-fragility ability? In light of all of that this is weak but fun.
mirrodin71 - Mechanically this is pretty good - although four mana is suspect for a double clone, even one that comes with a condition/delay. Not getting the flavor of haunt here - maybe it's a haunting melody? - and it seems like a mechanical kludge.
Legend - This is the opposite of willows' card, seemingly: Purely spotlighting mechanics over flavor. Embody seems to basically be the lovechild of living weapon and bestow, and it probably would work okay, but I'm just not sure it's original or if I like it all that much.

It’s time for your critiques!

Raptorchan
Flintlock - pretty creative especially for red. it should be an Aura with "enchant artifact".
Jimmy Groove - very creative. raw but I like it. Looks like fun.
Drewdagreek - Also creative. Could use some refinement. Good flavor.
raptorchan - simple and solid. Well balanced
Void_nothing - mechanically interesting. Maybe should say "non-Bear" instead of "nontoken"? I love the bear tribe. I even ran Bear tribal for a while. (I like underdog tribes.) Seems way out of color even in light of Bear's Companion.

I think this is pretty much fine except that the flavor of a Hydra eating Dragons is weird. I'd have used one iconic or the other at the top, not both.
This is pretty delightful and solidly in-color. good work.
The flavor of this is off (since when do Servos go hunting?) but mechanically I buy it.
Flavor-wise, Saboteurs sound too sophisticated to be Gremlins. Also I'm concerned at the very high power level of this card.
Wording here needs polishing. The effect is okay. I'm not excessively excited by a legendary that makes other legendaries but it's not unheard-of and it's a fair limiter to the ability to create 4/4s.

I could see Haunt in blue, but in green - not so much. This card could've as well been mono-U. Flavor-wise its fine, but the power level just seems a little bit too high. It should be CMC5, I think.
Nice flavor, but it's too "cute" imo. Also, double-G and double-R for the first and second activated abilities respectively looks a bit awkward, even if paying GG in turn four in a red-green deck shouldn't be a problem.
I think if this got printed, it would be an uncommon. "Living Weapon" for auras is not terribly creative, but makes sense - auras need this kind of ability way more than equipments.
Basically a blue Pacifism, since the enchanted creature isn't going to attack very often, but I really like the "Fata Morgana" flavor here.
I'm not really feeling the flavor here. Power-wise, this seems pretty strong, especially at Instant speed. I think a spell like this is not impossible, but this card would've been "safer" and probably more realistic if it was a sorcery.
A solid build-around-me card with good flavor. I have a little trouble imagining 4/4 or 5/5 Gremlins though. They don't feel like they ever grow bigger than 3/3 (permanently). Having it create X 1/1 or 2/2 tokens would've been a better fit, I think.
