Show and Tell from by Jeff Laubenstein and Wizards of the Coast
Welcome to the Card Creation League! In the first two rounds, entry is free for anyone. Come join us!
Please vote in August’s CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for September’s CCL!
Theme
Kids from a very young age often embark in Show and Tell, an activity which allows people to present something they have or own with others. This round, we’re going to capture that spirit with your designs for the round!
Challenge
Create an artifact or creature card with a “splashy” enters‐the‐battlefield effect as if, flavorfully, it was being unveiled.
Create a new artifact, creature, or artifact creature
Make an interesting enters‐the‐battlefield effect
The card should feel like someone is revealing it or releasing it out to the world
Please place a rarity for your new card: (C for Common, U for Uncommon, R for Rare, or M for Mythic Rare)
Tournament legal cards only
You may only choose an artifact, a creature, or an artifact creature — no other card types allowed
Your card’s rules text must contain “When ~ enters the battlefield” where the tilde (~) refers to your card’s name (if it’s in reminder text for a keyword, that’s acceptable)
No flip cards or double-faced cards
Your classwork is due Friday, September 16, 23:59 CDT.
Schedule
Round 1 — Open to Everyone (First week)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (Second week)
Top 8 — Open to top 8 finishers from Rounds 1 and 2 (Third week)
Top 4 — Open to top 4 finishers from last round (Fourth week)
Final (End of month)
After some discussion with the CCL organizers, we are making some slight changes to the schedule.
We’ve been historically running into a scheduling problem where there just isn’t enough time to complete a CCL in a month. We’ve also been noticing that the third week has seen low participation, likely as people see they are no longer in the hunt for a Top 4 spot, or assuming it’s only for people who have finished high in the first two rounds. What we are changing is making the third round really matter, by re-instituting the Top 8, to get more people interested in later rounds, and basically shortening up the schedule a bit.
Consider this an experiment, but one that might just stay.
+3 points for each First Place +2 points for each Second Place +1 point for each Third Place
+1 bonus point for posting critiques +1 bonus point for posting a Top 3 ranking
The points received by each player will be added up and calculated as a percentage of the maximum points that player could have obtained, which are given by 3 ×(number of critiques received)+ 2.
The percentages will then be ordered in decreasing order and that will be the standings for the round.
The percentages from the first three rounds will be added up at the end of Round 3 to determine the Top 8. 2 bonus points will be awarded to anyone who voted in August’s final poll.
The same system will be used for the final round.
As usual, the final winner will be determined by a public poll.
Critiques It’s time for your critiques!
Critique the cards of the six people immediately below your name, looping to the top of the list as necessary. Then, among those six, rank what you feel are the top three. (Ranking your top 3 gets you a point, and completing critiques gets you another point.)
Critiques are technically optional, but they’re one of the easiest ways to get points. And you don’t have to write very much either!
An easy way to get the six cards you are critiquing in a post is to use the Multi-quote button for each submission. Start with the first person who is below your name, look for their post, and click on the Multi-quote button. Then continue down the list. Click Reply when you have all six queued up.
After that, briefly write about what you like and don’t like on those cards. It’s totally okay to edit this in more than one sitting. Feel free to revise this as much as you like before the deadline.
You’ll also then rank them with your own “top 3.” (Usually people will wrap the critiques and the top 3 into separate spoiler tags, but however you would like to do it all is fine.)
You have until Tuesday, September 20th, 23:59 CDT for all critiques.

Talk about a splashy ETB ability! This card meets the challenge wonderfully and thanks to putting the cards on top of the library it also looks balanced well enough. It just doesn't appeal to my own style of play, but that's just a personal thing that has nothing to do with the design, which again is very very good.

We've had exchanges before and we both know we disagree about card formatting, it's useless to discuss that again as we both know our opinions on that won't change. The card itself looks fine but it doesn't actually work as the value of X does not get passed to the triggered ability. Monstrosity was an exception and it had to spell it out explicitly in its CR entry just for Polukranos, World Eater to work. It's true that the rules could always change, but as they are, this doesn't work.

An incomplete card, what can I say? I can guess the end of that ability, but I can't know if other abilities or flavor text are supposed to be there, and I also don't know the intended power and toughness even if I can imagine the range. I can't judge an incomplete card, I'm sorry.

Very good, it looks powerful but balanced to me and it has very good flavor. The only minor thing I can say is that "damage equal to its power" looks like a small bend in white, but it's certainly not a break, especially as you associate it with "attacking or blocking creature", and it would be green anyway, which makes a lot of sense with this being a Selesnya griffin as the flavor text specifies. Excellent work! (in a bracket that has a lot of problems, so you're definitely going straight at the top of my standings without any doubt)

First of all, a warm welcome! I saw your submissions here and in the DCC and I honestly feel you can do much better. I feel really bad advertising myself, but feel free to check out my articles (link in signature). I have a feeling you are exactly one of those people I wrote them for. For example, what do we have here? A card with subgames. It's a very well known fact that subgames are a problem in modern Magic design. They cause all kinds of issues: with complexity, in tournaments, in multiplayer, in digital, etc... It may feel tempting to explore what looks like a huge unexplored design space, with only one black-bordered card existing, but as Maro often asks: is it design space worth exploring? Wizards' answer is "no", and I honestly agree with them on this. Looking forward to see more and better designs from you! Don't give up!

I'm really sorry, especially because it's you, but this doesn't meet the challenge. In the clarifications, it's explicitly stated that there had to be a "When this enters the battlefield" triggered ability, which this is not. This is too bad, because I really like how simple, effective and flavorful the card is, even if it has potential memory issues, but I have to consider it out with much regret on my part.
Top 3
I have a problem, as I really feel I can only vote for two submissions...
1st place: RaikouRider
2nd place: Forestsguy
3rd place: If possible, none. If there has to be one, than Flatline, as the card would be perfectly fine and printable if it actually met the challenge. None of the others are printable as is, as they have much bigger problems (detailed above). I'm sorry.

Typical Hydra. Not as original as say Maga, Traitor to Mortals. Both appealing to flavor Timmies, black death loving flavor Timmies (me), and giant hydrakraken/fatties loving flavor Timmies (also me). Bidome is artifact Vesuva or artifact-land clone. It is a good card, really appealing. But it will only ever be as splashy as other lands, and most lands are not splashy FlashyWow with their ETB.

Really good design. Multiplayer and choices-choices card for sure. However "Exile everyone's topthree is NOT as FlashyWow effect. Maybe the royal rumble of casting the exie cards is, but not the ETB.

Ive read f posts about Shahrazad before, but I do not know his importance or appeal or what he did. Design wise this feels very silver Un-card. and can lead to a lot of issues. Certainly a FlashyWow effect, but also very confusing, stalling and troublesome.

Her ETB is as FlashyWow as that token monk or catpain of the guard. Also her cooles part of effect is not her ETB (Her ETB is strong and Wow).

Simple, powerful, flavorful and scary - how it possible to dislike anything about this card?

For a card that "releases" something big, ugly and DEMONIC it has no drawbacks - only upsides. I think Hellcarver Demon does this job better and more flavorful, but as a huge Timmy I personally can't resist the idea of casting six big, scary demons for next six turns.
Surveillance Network6

So much value for 6 but it looks surprisingly well balanced for Mythic - just run it in the right deck, also "nontoken" prevents it from be totally broken. Nice but I didn't get the idea with "release it!".
Mana Labyrinth7
Artifact (R)
Flash Imprint - When Mana Labyrinth enters the battlefield, exile target spell. T: Add the exiled card's mana cost to your mana pool. (Mana cost includes color.)
I really, really love the concept but it's unbalanced - you counter the spell AND get a pretty powerful mana stone (in the worst case you can spend a mana as though it's a colorless mana and amount of mana will be big - probably 3 or more, probably much more because if you can cast something for 7, your opponent can, too. Maybe "a one mana of each of exiled spell's colors" would be better, but whatever. I like it.

I don't really like the idea of white/lack Graft, but after Abzan with Outlast mechanic it seems possible. Balance is ok and concept is neat. But it's just a big good creature, it doesn't fit the "release the kraken" concept very well.
I should choose only three and it will be a hard decision. I am very sorry.

Ever since Zuberi, Golden Feather and Griffin Canyon have Griffins been one of my favorite underdog tribes. This would be enough to make me build Griffin tribal. It’s DEFINITELY mythic material though (not rare). The ebt effect isn’t like YOWZA!, but it’s bomby enough.

Backwards-named-Shahrazad. I’ve always liked Shahrazad, and I very much like this twist on Shahrazad. The effect feels like it was forced onto a creature for the contest rather than a natural fit for a creature. Unfortunately, this doesn't meet "Clarification #1". It wouldn't be printed in a black-bordered set because it would ruin people's day in limited due to its time-consuming nature. (Also, I’m pretty sure there’s no “Human Zombies” in Magic, probably because the default pre-death race of a “Zombie” is presumed to be “Human”.) That being said, it is quite the DAAANG! ebt effect and would greatly appeal to "Un"Limited players (pun intended).

I’m surprised at the cold reception this card is getting because it is f’n awesome. I love this card and would love a Masterpiece foil of this for my commander deck. It’s perfectly flavored for an artifact or land themed set or the Simic. Which reminds me, I’ve stolen Biodome for my custom Rav set (which has a land subtheme). Strictly speaking, it doesn’t meet “Clarification #3” of this round, but perhaps you missed that somehow, and it is nonetheless in the spirit of the challenge if nothing else. The effect itself isn’t like DOYNG! in and of itself (it’s probably just a Manalith in limited), but in constructed, it could be set up for some nice shenanigans.

Appropriately named. Many a player would learn some of the finer points of priority from Pandora’s Box (including me). The emphasis of this round is a BOING! etb effect, which this lacks despite its potentially huge effect on the game. Also, I think it should say “may cast spell cards” or “may play cards”.

I like this mechanically quite a bit, but I’m having a hard time getting past the flavor of “Graft” on a WB Angel. I would even prefer if you had simply renamed Graft to “Gift” or something more spiritual/angelic and less scientific. Or you could even just drop the keyword altogether and use the reminder text (slightly modified) as rules text. Also, despite its raw power, it lacks a SPLOOSH! etb effect.
Top Three:
1. RaikouRider - Simple and Solid
2. Flatline - Strictly speaking, you're a rebel with no regard for the rules and should be permanently disqualified, but you're lucky because I'm in a good mood today so I won't use my connections and influence to make that happen. I am keeping an eye on you and your comrades though.
3. Raptorchan - No comment.
Raptorchan - This card would cause quite a bit of confusion with people casting each others' cards as much as this would allow. Still, I think it seems like a fun and original idea. I'm not sure how powerful the card is considering that you just spent 5 mana to cast it, and all of your opponents get to untap and get their choice of cards before you. It seems like it would be hard to break. The static ability is the splashy part of the card, the enter the battlefield effect by itself is rather mundane. Also, it's kinda weird that the card itself isn't being "presented" but is actually doing the "presenting".
mirrodin71 - This card has a couple of formatting mistakes (name should be bold, lifelink shouldn't be capitalized, and the ability itself isn't really worded correctly), but I'm willing to overlook those. That said, I like this card, but graft has only been seen in blue and green thus far. I suppose it could be expanded into other colors at some point in the future though.
StonerOfKruphix - Hmmm...This card is very interesting. In the right situation it is a complete blowout. The question is, how often would that situation arise? I think it would often enough that, at the very least, this card shouldn't have flash. The card is potentially one sided board wipe with a body attached. Still, I suppose, if Sunblast Angel can exist, so can this card...just not with flash. It does a good job of both being "splashy" and fulfilling the flavor challenge.
void_nothing - Holy moly! A colorless counterspell that ramps (potentially like crazy). This it costed so that it might actually be fine, but I doubt it. It would certainly be fun in Tron or EDH. I don't really get any sense of something being revealed. Some flavor text would've gone a long way here.
bravelion83 - This card is too powerful. Three flying creatures and drawing four cards is strong even without the other ability. Although this card certainly has a very splashy enter the battlefield effect, it's a little weird that what is presenting isn't something new, but something old that has been improved upon.
Forestguy - Six Demons seems a bit excessive to me, especially considering how powerful and expensive Demons are (CMC wise). Also because you could just fetch up another one of these if you actually needed more Demons. I can see some scenarios where you might end up regretting stacking your deck to make your next six draws all Demons. The card seems to be presenting a glimpse of a harrowing future, so you are good there.

“Show and Tell”
Show and Tell from by Jeff Laubenstein and Wizards of the Coast
Schedule
+3 points for each First Place
+2 points for each Second Place
+1 point for each Third Place
+1 bonus point for posting critiques
+1 bonus point for posting a Top 3 ranking
The points received by each player will be added up and calculated as a percentage of the maximum points that player could have obtained, which are given by 3 × (number of critiques received) + 2.
Critiques
It’s time for your critiques!

I'm sorry.

For a card that "releases" something big, ugly and DEMONIC it has no drawbacks - only upsides. I think Hellcarver Demon does this job better and more flavorful, but as a huge Timmy I personally can't resist the idea of casting six big, scary demons for next six turns.

So much value for 6 but it looks surprisingly well balanced for Mythic - just run it in the right deck, also "nontoken" prevents it from be totally broken. Nice but I didn't get the idea with "release it!".

Imprint - When Mana Labyrinth enters the battlefield, exile target spell.
I like it.

3. Raptorchan - No comment.
mirrodin71 - This card has a couple of formatting mistakes (name should be bold, lifelink shouldn't be capitalized, and the ability itself isn't really worded correctly), but I'm willing to overlook those.
