Come one, come all to the grandest card design contest in the land! Welcome to round one. There was a clue posted in the judge sign up thread as to this months theme:
This months theme is a simple product that we take to every event.
At least to ones where we duel and command as part of introductions.
The answer? A Deck! More specifically a deck of Magic cards. This months theme will revolve around designing cards for the different types of precon decks you can pick up at brick and mortar or online stores.
So where does that leave us for round one? Intro Decks.
Your Challenge:
Pick a specific set that is modern legal. Ignore the core sets. Design a rare that would be perfect for the cover foil card for a new intro deck using that set. Please include the set you chose and a fictitious intro deck name with your entry.
Sub Challenge 1: Your card has a converted mana cost of 4 or less.
Sub Challenge 2: Your card does not use any evergreen keywords anywhere in its rules text.
Clarifications:
* While you can choose any set that's modern legal to base your card in, your creation should use standard/contemporary power levels, wordings, and design philosophies.
* Intro decks were not always a concept for Magic: The Gathering. Before, there were theme decks and the card on the covers where not always rares. However for the challenge if you choose a set that did not have intro decks, you are still creating a intro deck for it using contemporary standards.
* Your fictitious intro deck can't use the same the name, but can use the same theme as an existing one if you wish. For example, if you choose to base your card on Return to Ravnica, you can do a new Rakdos intro deck with a new rare card for it's cover but call it something other than "Rakdos Raid."
Our Rubric for the Month:
Design -
(X/3) Appeal: Do the different player psychographics (Timmy/Johhny/Spike) have a use for the card? (X/3) Elegance: Is the card easily understandable at a glance? Do all the flavor and mechanics combined as a whole make sense?
Development - (X/3) Viability: How well does the card fit into the color wheel? Does it break or bend the rules of the game? Is it the appropriate rarity? (X/3) Balance: Does the card have a power level appropriate for contemporary constructed/limited environments without breaking them? Does it play well in casual and multiplayer formats? Does it create or fit into a deck/archetype? Does it create an oppressive environment?
Creativity - (X/3) Uniqueness: Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel “fresh”? (X/3) Flavor: Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?
Polish - (X/3) Quality: Points deducted for incorrect spelling, grammar, and templating. (X/2) *Main Challenge: Was the main challenge satisfied? Was it approached in a unique or interesting way? Does the card fit the intent of the challenge? (X/2) Sub Challenges: One point awarded per satisfied subchallenge condition.
Total: X/25
*An entry with 0 points here is subject to disqualification.

Edit: Question - Should we use wording from the set/timeframe we select from, or the latest oracle wording? (eg "is unblockable" vs "can't be blocked" or "in play" vs "on the battlefield.")

Answering this as a judge.
A few months ago I remember a player (Legend if I recall correctly) in the final round being heavily punished by all judges, myself included, for making a card that was supposed to come from a very old set with the wording it would have had at that time. It was a "Goddess" that was trying to represent what a modern Planeswalker card would have looked like that long ago. The templating was a mess on that card, I understood the intention of having the card feel like if it were actually from that time, but it was way too hard to understand what the card did. I was able to come up with an acceptable "translation" of that card into present wording but it was very hard and I had to analyze each single word on the card and it took me quite some time. Because of this past experience, I feel confident to give you this...
short answer: always use latest Oracle wording, even if you make a card that's supposed to come from a very old set. Details above.
Unless the host says something different, I will definitely and heavily penalize any card that uses old wordings. You all have been warned!

Bravelion83 is correct. From this challenges clarifications:
* While you can choose any set that's modern legal to base your card in, your creation should use standard/contemporary power levels and design philosophies.
Technically I didn't quite clarify on using oracle wordings, but I think the intent is here. I'm revising this clarification to read as:
* While you can choose any set that's modern legal to base your card in, your creation should use standard/contemporary power levels, wordings, and design philosophies.
This starting round is certainly more of a challenge than it looks. Intro Pack rares need to be clean, powerful and attractive to newer players.
Also I think having the clearer sized font is more important here than adding flavor text.
