A huge amount of card design on these forums go into the mechanical implementation of magic cards. This month we will be stretching our creative muscles a bit more by designing cards that tell stories and/or help the player understand and enjoy the setting.
Each round will have cards connected to new planes you create. Feel free to either delve deep into a single plane or use a new world each round unless the challenge says otherwise.
Have fun.
Round 1 Challenge: Create a creature and a non-creature cards each from a new plane. These cards should help introduce this new plane through their name, mechanics and/or flavour text.
These cards don't have to be mechanically complex but instead should focus on conveying the flavour of this new plane..
I'm thinking of a world where the government is run by machines.
Prison Transport5
Artifact Creature - Construct (R) 3, t, Return ~ to its owner's hand: Exile target detained creature.
3/4 It's a ride no one wants to take.
Arrest WarrantxWWW
Sorcery
Detain up to X target creatures. "The charges are vagrancy, littering, assault, resisting arrest, attempted murder and protesting."
"Is that all? No treason?"
"Thanks for reminding me."
In a technologically advanced world powered physically by geothermal energy and mentally by the intellect of dragons, skilled riders work together with their intelligent mounts, resulting in most insurgence being quelled in a hurry. The advanced civilization's greatest enemy is the tectonic instability of the volcanic realms giving shape to bizarre creatures set on overthrowing draconic rule.
Skyknight Apprentice2WW
Creature - Human Knight {U}
When Skyknight Apprentice enters the battlefield, put a 3/3 red Dragon creature token with flying onto the battlefield. An apprentice's first solo flight is both the hardest and easiest moment of training. 1/1
Javid's Tactics3RW
Enchantment {R} 1 : The next 1 damage that would be dealt to target creature or player is dealt to another target creature or player instead. The riders of Tol Hera Castle make widespread use of mirrorscale armor, deflecting dragonfire off their comrades to confuse their foes.
Maculate Amphitheater
Land (R)
Maculate Amphitheater enters the battlefield tapped unless you exile three cards from your graveyard. T: Add B or R to your mana pool. “They say more blood was spilled at just one of these than during the entirety of the Purge. I shiver when I ponder about why.”
-Kalemi, historian
Penitent Revenant1W
Creature - Spirit (U) Follow the light - 1WW: Return Penitent Revenant from your graveyard to the battlefield. Activate this ability only if a card left your graveyard this turn. "No amount of yearning for the light can earn the damned an escape from this dying world."
-The Shrouded One
2/1
Humans have performed strip mining to extract resources, regardless of the damage it does. Picture a plane where its inhabitants are hastening their own destruction by similar practices.
Kelem Preservist
Creature — Human Druid {U}
, Discard a nonland card: Return target land card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped. The few remaining druids faced a daunting task: attempting to save a world strangling itself.
2/2
Crumple
Sorcery {C}
Rend (Each land you sacrifice while casting this spell pays for or one mana of a color that land could produce.)
Destroy target land.
Tiger Claw Practitioner2R
Creature - Human Monk (U) Technique - Whenever Tiger Claw Practitioner attacks, you may pay 1R. If you do, untap it and remove it from combat, then Tiger Claw Practitioner fights target creature. "I need only one strike to show you my true strength."
3/2
(This ability word works by foregoing the attack and possibly paying mana to get a different effect.)
Three-Part Staff1
Artifact - Equipment (C) 1: Equipped creature gets +2/+0, +1/+1, or +0/+2 until end of turn. Activate this ability only once each turn.
Equip 1
I'm going to have some fun, so I'm going to start with some ideas I came up a few days ago and build from there:
Raid Crew2(U/B)
Creature - Human Pirate (C)
Plunder 1 (When this creature deals combat damage to a player, exile the top card from that player’s library. You may put a plundered card into its owner’s graveyard to add one colorless mana or any mana of that card’s color to your mana pool) Smelly, foul-mouthed, and the terror of any Galdean sailor
2/3
Any Port In a Storm(G/W)
Instant (C)
Explore for land. Draw a card. (To explore for land, reveal cards from your library until you reveal a land card. Put it on top of your library and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.) “This vile weather will be our death. Helm! Take course to the nearest shore, whatever it may be.”
— Captain Morewater
Non-creature
Locust Nest GG
Enchantment – Aura (U)
Enchant land
Whenever mana from enchanted land is used to play an Insect spell, put a 1/1 green Insect creature token into play. "Keep your head down, my son. The Abhindas have claimed this region, too, and we must find a place to camp before nightfall." -- Cecil Rexic
Creature Converging Swarm6BB
Creature - Insect Horror (R)
Whenever an opponent plays a creature, if Converging Swarm is in your hand, you may reveal it and pay 1B. If you do, put a 1/1 black Insect creature token into play.
Affinity for Insects
Flying, lifelink "When we heard the swarm approaching, my father looked me in the eye and gave me one last bit of instruction: 'Run.'" -- Luc Rexic
5/5
Thunderhost AvianUR
Creature - Bird Wizard (C)
Flying R: Thunderhost Avian deals 1 damage to target creature or player and 1 damage to itself. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.
1/2 "I am born of the sky rocks, a vessel of the Endless Storm, let it grace you through me."
Vine-given StrengthG
Instant (C)
Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. Manafeed - If an opponent controls a spell or ability, that creature gets +4/+4 until end of turn instead. Hungered after by the Living Earth, hunted by the Endless Storm, many of Elnicor's wildlife shelters in the trees.
Kedrick, Seige Expert1WW
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior (R)
Fortifications you control have fortify W
Whenever a fortification enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card. "Kedrick has been instrumental in the defense of this citadel for the past twenty years. Not one adversary has penetrated these walls in that time." - Tavaris
2/2
Non-Creature
Crumbling Foundations2R
Sorcery (C)
Destroy target land. If that land was fortified, Crumbling Foundations deals 1 damage to each creature controlled by that land's controller. Be sure to build your castle on stable ground; or the ground will punish you for it.
The mana of this plane is unique in that it taints the personality in unknown ways, bringing out a different side of things. More specifically: the good sides of the "bad" colors, and the bad sides of the "good" ones.
WU: The society at large, controlled by a brutally oppressive military/wizard alliance led by a shadowy tribunal. Order at any cost. A bunch of weirded-out control freaks. RB(2/G): The "good guys," a scattered but growing resistance of druids, wilds people, and shamans led by Karabast and his circle of ceraunospices (ones who practice ceraunomancy). Freedom-seekers. Some call them anarchists. They totally probably are. G(2/R)(2/B)(2/U): Mercenaries, strongmen, rogue wizards, beasties-for-hire, etc. Give us money and we will make punch things. (2/W)(2/B): A loose confederation of angelic and demonic beings who seem intent on keeping and enforcing peace. Their motives and reasons for teaming up are unknown.
Apprentice Ceraunospex2RR
Creature - Human Shaman (C) T: Apprentice Ceraunospex deals 1 damage to target creature or player. Scry 1. “Look to the sky and see what I see.”
2/1
Search and Seizure2UU
Sorcery (R)
Exile the top five cards of target opponent’s library. You may play one of them without paying its mana cost this turn. “A warrant? There’s no need for that. Everyone knows what you’re hiding.”
A primitive plane in many standards, Crynthea is divided by two different mindsets; those who believe in growth and development, and those who believe in order and strict governing. Now a war is threatened over how should the plane advance.
Voice of the Wilds2UG
Creature - Elemental -- Uncommon
Flying Experience - When Voice of the Wilds deals damage to a player, you may pay . If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. They say the forest is the wisest of all beings.
3/3
Repel the Assailants1WW
Instant -- Uncommon
Exile target attacking creature. Put a 1/1 white Soldier creature token onto the battlefield. "Defend your lives, your families, your futures!" --Gyrin, of Blood

Good luck everyone!
I still have time to get in a submission right? The deadline is tonight right?
Alisate is a world that is 90% ocean. It wasn't always this way however. The world used to be a near perfect balanced between sea and land until a thief, Jamoury Kilo, found and stole the Scale of Locond and awoke the ancient giant leviathan who claimed the world as his domain. With the population of the world crammed onto what little land is left, the people of Alisate have set off to find the relic, imprison Locond, and return the world to balance.
Wall of KelpG
Creature - Plant Wall (C)
Defender 1G: Regenerate Wall of Kelp. Our harpoons passed right through it. Our swords got caught in it's vines. Who would think in a sea of leviathans, krackens, and sharks that we would be bested by some damn plants!
0/1
Harpoon Cannon3
Artifact (U)
You may choose not to have Harpoon Cannon untap during your untap step. 3, T: Harpoon Cannon deals 1 damage to target creature. Tap that creature. It doesn't untap during it's controller's untap step for as long as Harpoon Cannon remains tapped.

Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. Manafeed - If an opponent controls a spell or ability, that creature gets +4/+4 until end of turn instead. Hungered after by the Living Earth, hunted by the Endless Storm, many of Elnicor's wildlife shelters in the trees.
This world sounds a little like Zendikar. Up to 11. Manafeed is a workable mechanic, though it seems a bit uninteresting. The Avian seems fine.
Creature: Wall of Crystals1U
Creature - Wall (C)
Defender
When Wall of Crystals enters the battlefield, draw a card.
Impact U(You may cast this spell for its impact cost. If you do, switch it's power and toughness until end of turn when it enters the battlefield.)
0/3 "Dimensional tremors perturb everything." - Alvarian almanac, sixth year of third era
Noncreature: Flesh Resonance1B
Instant (U)
Choose one - Destroy target creature with power greater than its toughness; or destroy target creature with toughness greater than its power. Each alvarian mage knows that even small crack can bring disaster.
Impact would benefit nicely from being more permanent, and besides evoke like effects, only works well with flash and haste. I know your spell is technically different from "Destroy target creature with power not equal to its toughness." Indeed, it seems power/toughness flipping may be a theme here.
Skytank Mechanic2U
Creature- Human Artificer (Uncommon) T: Target artifact creature gains flying until end of turn. 5, T: Regenerate target artifact creature. Airships can only do so much as their builders allow.
1/3
Shipping Crate2
Artifact (Uncommon) 1, T: Return Shipping Crate and target artifact to their owner's hands. "C'mon, men, load 'em up to the brim! We've gotta send these out before picking up the next batch!" -Veljan, captain of the Brownstone Inc. trade blimp
Steampunk-esque world it seems. I know regenerate is usually out of blue's pie, but the regenerate ability could cost less. Shipping Crate is pretty potentially powerful, but it has nice flavor.
Crimson Leaf Oak3GW
Creature - Treefolk (C)
Sunburst (This enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each color of mana spent to cast it.)
Vigilance The more sun the forces of Autumn take for themselves, the less there is for the sky.

Enchantment (R)
Lands are all basic land types in addition to their other types. (They have “T: Add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool.”)
“We don’t always control the Well of Time, but we can make it look like we do.”
A world where seasons are factions? Interesting... Sunburst and struggles for the sun make for some nice flavor, and the oak seems fair, if potentially very strong. As for Image of Autumn, Prismatic Omen does it better and cheaper.
Equip 1
I can definitely see hints of the nature of this world, and its themes. Tiger Claw Practitioner is pretty cool. Seems pretty powerful, especially with a Three-Part Staff to back it up. (which is also a neat design)

Exodus of Zendikar - ON HOLD
Alisate is a world that is 90% ocean. It wasn't always this way however. The world used to be a near perfect balanced between sea and land until a thief, Jamoury Kilo, found and stole the Scale of Locond and awoke the ancient giant leviathan who claimed the world as his domain. With the population of the world crammed onto what little land is left, the people of Alisate have set off to find the relic, imprison Locond, and return the world to balance.

1G: Regenerate Wall of Kelp.
Our harpoons passed right through it. Our swords got caught in it's vines. Who would think in a sea of leviathans, krackens, and sharks that we would be bested by some damn plants!

Harpoon Cannon 3
Artifact (U)
You may choose not to have Harpoon Cannon untap during your untap step.
3, T: Harpoon Cannon deals 1 damage to target creature. Tap that creature. It doesn't untap during it's controller's untap step for as long as Harpoon Cannon remains tapped.

EDIT: Adding judgment for GMom
This world sounds a little like Zendikar. Up to 11. Manafeed is a workable mechanic, though it seems a bit uninteresting. The Avian seems fine.
Impact would benefit nicely from being more permanent, and besides evoke like effects, only works well with flash and haste. I know your spell is technically different from "Destroy target creature with power not equal to its toughness." Indeed, it seems power/toughness flipping may be a theme here.
Steampunk-esque world it seems. I know regenerate is usually out of blue's pie, but the regenerate ability could cost less. Shipping Crate is pretty potentially powerful, but it has nice flavor.
A world where seasons are factions? Interesting... Sunburst and struggles for the sun make for some nice flavor, and the oak seems fair, if potentially very strong. As for Image of Autumn, Prismatic Omen does it better and cheaper.
I can definitely see hints of the nature of this world, and its themes. Tiger Claw Practitioner is pretty cool. Seems pretty powerful, especially with a Three-Part Staff to back it up. (which is also a neat design)
