@ Piar: Putting them in thread is good, but it is somewhat less visible/odd that you edit them in, since that doesn't pick up notifications. Might want to make sure they get into a new post instead. The judgings look good though, I almost wanna do my own, haha.
@ Flatline: Yeah, busy times can get in the way, maybe you'll throw some judgings of your own this month since you're not competing? If you manage to find some time, anyway.
I generally do try to win but I don't feel I exactly have winning material and I'm pretty willing to just throw out silly stuff I don't expect to win days, so it's more just trying my best while having fun and hoping I can maybe do a win.
(To whom it might concern: I made it an Uncommon because Wizened Cenn, Imperious Perfect and the like were all part of an uncommon cycle, and since Druid as a creature type is way less common than Elf or Soldier, I added the mana production and shaved the 2, adding the G instead.)
I'm all for UC lords (the cycle in Dark Ascension is another fine example), but it just seems like +1/+1 and turning everything into a Birds is really strong for 2 mana at UC. Still, Gemhide Sliver is a card, and a common no less, so I suppose your card is fine.

I updated the scores in today's thread. Sorry about that. I was out late last night after draft (went 3-1 with the worst limited deck I've ever built), and I left my laptop at my friend's house. I ended up using my wife's Kindle to post the thread, which I've never done before. On top of all that, the Kindle had only 8% battery when I started (I couldn't find the charger), so I had a very limited amount of time to finish getting the thread up. Anyway, I've got my laptop now, so everything is back as it should be.

Indivicivet (I like it even though rarity is missing, I just assumed it's a rare)
Thanks. I would say it was a rare, if it was to be printed in a standard-legal set. However, I haven't been putting rarity on my cards for a few reasons:
- Unlike mana cost, PT, etc, it's not something that is a specific property of a card. Reprints can and often do change the rarity of a card.
- The rarity a card should have depends on the context. Supplemental sets often allow higher power/complexity level at a lower rarity, and the same applies to cards which align closely with the theme/desired environment for the set - e.g. uncommon dragon cycle in FRF, etc. Including a rarity is similar to (although obviously not as silly as) including details like the set image and card number; i.e. only really important if you're designing an entire set.
- When I look at other peoples cards, I often disagree with their allocated rarity - sometimes I think "there's no way that's should be a mythic", and sometimes it's "I can't see that being printed at uncommon". However, I've never been impressed by how clever someone has been in choosing a rarity for a card... so I don't take it into account for voting, even if they include a rarity.
- It makes it a bit harder to parse the card. In particular U/R resemble mana costs/colour indicators, which tends to trip me up a bit. I guess it doesn't apply here as much, because there are mana symbol images, but it could still be confusing with colour indicators.
So, I generally ignore rarity indicators completely. I don't think there's any point personally, but if people strongly object to the omission, I could include them for contest posts...
Also, sorry if this is aside should be in the discussion thread, I just thought it'd be more direct to reply here.
I hope this doesn't sound too harsh (I'm just surprised, not angry at all), but I honestly can't conceive leaving rarity out of a card. It's just a fundamental part of a card, and while it's true that it can change, when you post cards in contests it's more or less implicitly assumed that we're using today's design standards, and that should leave no big doubts on what rarity a card should be if it were printed today. The reason rarity can shift in reprints is partly that (today's standards being different from past ones), with the other part being that different limited environments have different needs, but when you post a single card you can't care about that because you don't have the environment that surrounds it. To me, having a card without rarity is just like a creature card with no power and toughness, or a card with no card types. In all cases, a fundamental part is missing. In the MCC as a judge I do deduct a lot of points for a missing rarity, and most if not all other judges do too. Here I thought it was just an oversight and gave you my vote anyway because I liked the effect, but knowing it was intentional really makes me regret that... I will leave my vote as is, but I totally advise you to put rarity in your cards in the future, and not only for contests. Of course this is just my opinion, but I for one do feel strongly about it.

Hello Indivicivet! Welcome to the DCC. Happy to have you.
And now a few thoughts....
I highly recommend posting responses such as your response to bravelion here in the discussion thread instead of the contest thread. Although it's fine to say a little something in your contest entry, the contest thread should be left for card entries and votes.
Crits of cards are always more than welcome. Everybody likes to hear what others thought of their card, and it helps make people better designers. As far as where to post them is concerned, I'd say that if you're critiquing the cards that are currently up for vote, post them in the contest thread in a spoiler. If you are retroactively posting crits for cards from a previous day (not the cards currently up for voting), I would recommend posting them here in the discussion thread. I would definitely advise against posting crits prior to the cards being locked in though.
As far is rarity is concerned, I highly recommend including one, although I'm nearly the stickler bravelion is for such things. Still, there has never been a card printed without a rarity, and I don't see any reason that should be different here. I understand your thoughts on the matter, but you will most likely lose votes in the event that someone is trying to decide between your entry and someone else's. I often need to resort to details such as this when I'm having a difficult time deciding between two cards.
Anyway, I hope this was helpful to you, and again.....Welcome to the DCC. The greatest card contest this side of Alpha Centauri!
Edit: BTW....I know some hard core limited players that care as much about rarity as they do any other part of a card. When they had seeded packs in the pre-releases for a while there, I would study only the commons and uncommons before making my decision on which colors to choose (and the rare promo when that was a thing). Obviously it helps to know the rares also, but you can't count on getting them, so knowing which color has the best cards at C and UC before drafting is vital. I guess what I'm saying is, rarity is important.

@Indivicivet: I knew what I was about to say had the potential to be misunderstood in tone, and that was why I put that advance warning. It's very hard to express your tone in writing. There are more things I could say, but as they also have the potential to have their tone misunderstood, I won't say them. Let's just close it here. By the way, Flatline already said most of what I want to say in a much better way than I would be able to do right now, and I totally agree with him on everything.
The most important thing: don't let a disagreement like this be the reason you give up these contests. Now THAT would make me feel guilty.

Just my 2 cents on this. There are two major contexts in which it makes sense to me to leave out rarity: (1) when you are designing a custom set and coming up with ideas that are meant to be evaluated on their own merits first, and then assigned rarity at a later time and (2) when you are posting in one of the threads here that is just a game, with no competition or evaluation. So, for example, rarity is not included by custom on the card game threads here. But when we step into the realm of "critique my card" or a competition, rarity does matter. It's not at all uncommon for people to not vote for a card because it's been misplaced as an uncommon when it should probably be a rare, for example, and this will often be commented on. Rarity does serve a function of signifying relative power levels.
While I am saying that rarity is important, a great card is a great card, and I will generally vote for a great card whether I feel it's the correct rarity or not. Usually I will point out that I think the rarity should be changed when I vote for the card, but as I said before, the wrong rarity (or lack of one entirely) can sometimes be the make or break factor between two cards I like a lot. If it helps, look at it like this...... Wizards often changes the name of card from set to set (functional reprints), and frequently changes the flavor text, but we still include those details in our cards, right?
BTW, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse with this, I just enjoy talking about card design.

That's true there have been times I voted for a card even when I thought it had a wrong rarity, just because it was really well done and I liked it better than most of everything else I saw. I just also remember, within the past week or two alone, relegating certain cards to "honorable mention" status just because I felt the rarity was off and there were enough other viable cards to vote for. I also occasionally am a little iffy on whether some of my own cards should be rares or mythics, and I figure I probably miss the mark on that sometimes.
And yea, not intending to beat a dead horse but just sharing my thoughts.
Your point about art is well taken, and something that occurred to me when I was thinking about this subject prior to my previous post. I have seen people post art direction before, but very infrequently. I do believe that, if you included good art direction in your entries, or started posting renders with your own artwork, that would garner you some additional votes. That's kind of how flavor text works too. I rarely discount a card in the DCC for not having flavor text, but I have often voted for cards at least partially because of some really good flavor text. Again, these sort of things become increasingly important when you're deciding between two really close cards. Ultimately, what everyone is looking for some sort of wow factor, whether it be flavor, power, functionality, printability, whatever. The more time you spend on the fine details, the more likely you'll be to get votes. One last thing, you bring up an interesting point that I meant to mention before. You say yourself that your vote might hinge on incorrect rarity, so isn't not including one kinda cheating in way? Part of card contests is showing you have a good working understanding of card design, that includes knowing that Snapcaster Mage can't be an UC.
The line between rares and mythics is can be very hard to draw. I tend not to make mythics unless they are legendary creatures or planeswalkers (although planeswalkers never get any votes, so I son't usually make them).
Edit: BTW....Have fun on holiday.

Kicker 4C
If Cogworker Beyond Reason was kicked, it has sunburst and trample. “When the Eldrazi found New Phyrexia, the phyrexians attempted to corrupt them”
“Who won?” “They both did.”

Cogworker Beyond ReasonCC
Artifact Creature - Eldrai Juggernaut (U)
Kicker 5 Converge — Put X +1/+1 counters on Cogworker Beyond Reason, where X is equal to the number of colors spent to cast Cogworker Beyond Reason.
If Cogworker Beyond Reason was kicked, it has trample.
2/2
This doesnt alow for the flavor and restricts it to pure colorless or pure 5 color
Not much of a build around, what do you all think?
The first one is more splash-able
The Beholder10
Legendary Creature - Eldrazi Horror (Mythic)
Emerge BBUUGG
When you cast The Beholder, you may cast each Eldrazi card from your graveyard without paying its converted mana cost.
Eldrazi you control have hexproof and they can't be countered.
7/7
It's possible that I am misunderstanding emerge, but wouldn't this card's emerge cost not work? Emerge counts converted mana cost, so it would only reduce generic mana, right? This card's emerge cost has no generic mana. Again, I'm probably just misunderstanding emerge.
Edit: I just realized, the emerge cost of this guy is basically just , Sacrifice a creature. You can still do it, it just doesn't reduce the cost at all.
Votes: Groovelord (would EDH/10), Pollaski (love the card. Extra points for the flavor text)
Quick submission today. I'm in the middle of my second prerelease and I'm having a blast, I hope you all are having fun too!

I was pleased to be tied with Netn10 at 4th place. This was the first time I even made the top 5 so it's a start! It also looks like some more people are chipping in this month, so there will be some good competition.
Yes, I'm very please with the participation at this early stage. Let's hope it keeps up. I'm happy to see a lot of new designers, as well as the return of a few we haven't seen in a while. One of which has come out of the box like a house of fire. Are you sure you want to sit out bravelion?

Apologies for disappearing for the rest of this month. It turns out that August is going to be a little busier than I had hoped (plus, judging for the MCC as a newbie is hard work for the time being!)
I cannot wait to compete again next month with everyone. All of the new cards each and every day are definitely interesting!
(Could you update my card to the updated version? I commented on yesterdays thread then edited the card after so that I could enter for the day on time. But you uploaded this thread before I finished my update. It'd be appreciated, however no big deal if not. It'll just be my submission for tomorrow if not. Thanks!)
Since only one person other than you has voted up to this point , I updated your card per your request. I make no guarantees that I will be able to accommodate such a request again in the future, so it is highly advised that you have your card locked in by 10 PM EST.

Am I to understand that Groovelord's entry in the Sept 6 2016 DCC
the white two drop. If at turn two I used it, and an opponent reveals a hand like TarmogoyfDark ConfidantLiliana of the VeilBloodstained MireLightning BoltLightning Bolt
Then I name "Liliana of the Veil". On my opponent's next turn (If it's his second turn) I basically cause my opponent to skip his turn right? because they dont have Liliana's name?
Fate Reader 1W
Creature -- Human Cleric (R)
When Fate Reader enters the battlefield, target opponent reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card revealed this way. That player can't cast spells that don't share a name with the chosen card until your next turn.
"Some people don't believe in destiny. Destiny doesn't care."
2/1
not bashing or anything, just wondering if its supposed to work that way
I read it to be more like Silence than "Target opponent skips his or her next turn". In the scenario you've laid out, the opponent would still be able to untap, use any activated or triggered abilities, draw a card, and attack. They just wouldn't be able to cast any spells unless they had the mana to cast Liliana. Right?

Flying
Avian Boar enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it if it was cast any time you couldn’t have cast an instant. "'When pigs fly', they said. Ha!"

Is there a time that this could be cast that is also a "time you couldn't have cast an instant"? I don't think there is, but this has me second guessing. (Also, Boar is a creature type.)
Arcane VortexUR
Instant (C)
Target player shuffles target spell they control into their library. "With my voice reduced to a muffle, my intentions were lost in the shuffle." -- Hogarth, the Fool
Isn't this just Counterspell with a shuffle? No existing UR cards come close to this.
Isn't this just Counterspell with a shuffle? No existing UR cards come close to this.
Yes thats kind of exactly the point. I think of it as being as close to a 2 mana counterspell as we might be likely to see again. It's technically weaker than counterspell since the card is shuffled into the library and its a 2 color spell, and it requires you to target the player on top of the spell (making players with hexproof immune). It pretty much otherwise functions as if it was a counter for all intents and purposes though.
When I posted the exact same effect as an ETB on a rare 1UR 2/2 creature with flash last week, lots of people loved it and it got like 8 or 9 votes. To my surprise, no one seemed to complain that it's technically more powerful than Mystic Snake with a CMC of 3. Not sure why it's suddenly a no-no once I just make it an instant as a watered down Counterspell. I could see people thinking it's OP at common though and bumping it up to uncommon.
How this UR "shuffle into library" theme came about for me is that I was trying to find ways to make red do things it shouldn't like countering or discard, but it just was hard to justify. But adding U to the mix and taking a subtle cue from Chaos Warp, minus the drawback, seemed to work better. I figure, if red can emulate permanent destruction by shuffling cards into their owners library, maybe if U is added to the mix we can filter out the drawback part and we can experiment with other uses for shuffling cards into their owners library. That's where Swirling Vision and Arcane Vortex came from.

The most important thing: don't let a disagreement like this be the reason you give up these contests. Now THAT would make me feel guilty.

BTW, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse with this, I just enjoy talking about card design.
The post looks great. Welcome to the DCC!
And yea, not intending to beat a dead horse but just sharing my thoughts.
The line between rares and mythics is can be very hard to draw. I tend not to make mythics unless they are legendary creatures or planeswalkers (although planeswalkers never get any votes, so I son't usually make them).
Edit: BTW....Have fun on holiday.
I think this is a good use of Sunburst
Artifact Creature - Eldrai Juggernaut (U)
Kicker 5
Converge — Put X +1/+1 counters on Cogworker Beyond Reason, where X is equal to the number of colors spent to cast Cogworker Beyond Reason.
If Cogworker Beyond Reason was kicked, it has trample.

Not much of a build around, what do you all think?
The first one is more splash-able
Edit: I just realized, the emerge cost of this guy is basically just , Sacrifice a creature. You can still do it, it just doesn't reduce the cost at all. This might be a little Christmas land but.....1st turn Lightning Bolt.....2nd turn this guy, discard an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, hit for 17, GG.

House of fire? I wonder if I am the one being referred to contextually...
...probably not.
Anyway, it is a pleasure to be back! (I hope that goes for all of us returners.) Returning to design custom cards here was one of my 2016 resolutions, and I finally found free time this month to do it.
For just one month, I am. But I also totally share with you the joy for the increase in participation. I was very glad to notice last month had the longest final standings I can remember in recent times. Let's hope the trend keeps up and extends to our other contests as well!

@bravelion...I too hope that the participation increase spreads to the other contests as well. Unfortunately, I intend to take the month off from the CCL and MCC because I'll be on vacation for a week in August and may have a difficult time even keeping up posting the DCC.
