Congrats willows! That's two months in a row if I'm not mistaken?

Willows: My round 1 submissions creates a replacement effect that sets up a delayed triggered ability for each creature that would die this turn. It actually is very carefully worded to avoid situations like the one you described.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
I see what you're saying now. It took a few readings. I still think the wording could be improved, however, for that reason; it's not preferable for a card to have to be read twice!
There's a little more than 1 day left to enter cards for January round 2. If you haven't done so yet, what are you waiting for?
BTW, people have made some excellent cards thus far through the first 2 rounds. Keep up the good work!

Am I able to critique even if I didn't submit a card for this round? I just discovered it a day too late. I'm in round 2 though.
This is my first time hosting the CCL, and I can't recall this question ever coming up before, but I'm pretty sure the answer to this is no. I'm sorry to say so, but I'm pretty sure adding you just as a judge would throw the 1st round numbers off. If any of this is incorrect, somebody please let me know. You are obviously more than welcome to join in during the second round though. Glad to have you!
Edit: Of course if you just wanted to submit crits for fun, you're more than welcome to do so here in the discussion thread. People always appreciate feedback on their cards. As far as I'm concerned, I'd even give you the 2 pt bonus for doing so, but I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to do that.

I regretted how narrow I made it after critiquing the other cards, but as far as the way I worded it... I wanted it to feel like a first strike before first strike. I really wanted to specify that all damage dealt in this way in considered combat damage, but thought that would be a rules nightmare.

Ah I see. Even with that explanation, I don't think your card comes across as a hit before first strike. It comes off as some out of combat/supernatural thing a magical, killer blade might do.
I realize I was pretty harsh with my critiques this round, but overall I don't think it was the best effort. I even made a mistake this round with leaving out a clause to return the sword to the battlefield (though it was intentional that its ability triggers off the token. It's a mythic artifact that cost a solid amount of mana and requires a different samurai to die before you even get to the psuedo-but-not-really indestructible token. Perhaps inelegant but I doubt overly powerful.)
Honorable Wakizashi3
Artifact - Equipment (U)
Honorable Wakizashi can be attached only to a Samurai.
Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each point of bushido it has.
Equip 1 "May your honor be as pure as the steel of this blade."
-Swordsmith's blessing
Equipping limitations are kind of unnecessary, since generally speaking only Samurai have bushido anyways. Other than that, this is fine.
No. It's a weak synergy with a card that's already good on its own (golden tail, that is.)
Your card is narrow and overcosted as is it what it amounts to. Not unfixable, but it really should do something for non samurai and be costed accordingly. The Takeno ability it has is potentially fun on an equip, it just needs a different balance.
January top 8 round is up here. Please let me know if I screwed anything up. Congrats and good luck to our top 8, and thanks to everyone else for participating. You'll get 'em next month. I just know it!
Edit: The final results from the first two rounds can be found here.

I actually rather liked middle path despite the fiddliness/mathiness/complexity.
I like the idea too, it was pretty distinct, but it isn't just a complexity issue. It's that in most situation, you can just tap lands to turn it on whether you need the mana or not. As long as you have an even number of permanents, it's almost guaranteed. I didn't like that.

It still requires the controller to tap half his resources. If you are just tapping lands to get middle path, it basically turns into a static ability that costs mana. Almost like an activated ability. It still requires you to make a choice, even if you are just tapping lands to turn it on. Do I hold up my mana to cast/activate something, or do I just go all in on middle path? It seems like the choice would be obvious at times, but other times not so much so. I'm not sure how well the ability would actually play, but it seems like it would be worth a try. A while back I was trying to come up with a way to naturally change the game between two different modes, basically a day/night mechanic, and I came up with something that middle path kinda reminds of. It went like this.....(If the total number of untapped permanents is greater than or equal to the total number of tapped permanents, it's day. Otherwise it's night.)

I hadn't thought about it in the sense of casting things on your opponents turn, but I fully intended middle path to always be an EoT. So you cast your usually spell on your turn and any additional lands to insure it happens. It could be a fun game, but im guessing it will be too complex and create an artificial tapping of lands. Pros and cons I guess.

Man, this is kinda boring as Monk Tribal mechanic - it does nothing other than tapping, right? Even if it's not, it becomes just a t: "do something" ability limited to upkeeps. Not sure it really need to be keyworded.
The idea is that Meditate means "At the beginning of each upkeep, you may tap ~. Then, if it's tapped, <do a thing>". Note that it doesn't need to be tapped by the meditate ability - Meditate doesn't care if your creature is tapped because it attacked, because an opponent tapped it down, or even because you tapped it to pay for a Springleaf Drum. You also get two triggers if you choose to tap it at the start of your upkeep (or more than that, in a multiplayer game). I admit it's a simple mechanic, but I think there's a fair amount more meat on those bones than T: Do a thing in your upkeep.

Okay, I get it. But for me, it still reads like "then, if you tapped it this way..." because you can't tap a thing that was already tapped IIRC.
The ability doesn't say "If it was tapped" - that would do what you read it as, you're right - but "If it is tapped", which checks for a state of the permanent, not an action by the ability.

Shinken Master2WW
Creature - Human Samurai (U)
Vigilance, lifelink
Iaido (When this blocks or becomes blocked, it deals damage equal to it's power to a creature blocking or blocked by this. This deals no combat damage this turn.) "The line between life and death; it is what defines swordsmanship."
3/2
Except for the typo ("its power"), isn't this just first strike worded differently? I feel this could just be "Whenever this blocks or becomes blocked, it gains first strike until end of combat." The flavor is definitely there, but I have doubts on the mechanical side.
No, it's not first strike worded differently. First strike adds another step to the deal damage step of combat. Iaido occurs when blockers are declared as a trigger. It's faster than first strikers (and double strikers) and deals non-combat damage. It also only allows damage to be dealt to one target regardless of the number of blockers involved. How you interpret it from there is up to you, but there are definite rules differences.
I'm surprised there aren't more votes for these things.

The first round entries seemed more on point.
Hurray! A two card combo costings total of 8 mana to permanently give a card +1/+1 and bushido 1!

I'd be willing to give it a shot, I think.
