@admirableadmiral: what if I judged thenoodler vs Moss_Elemental and you judge RaikouRider vs SelesnyaNewLife? This way both of those matchups still have two judges judging it. It's me and you in both cases but hopefully that's not a problem. Please let me know as soon as possible.

I meant to finish this last night, but I fell asleep, and have been busy with the family for Memorial Day. I'm going to update the MCC as quickly as possible.
I assume since this doesn't say "opponent", the effect can be symmetrical? Also, Tilwin, I'm guessing that First Response is being viewed as "punishing" the opponent for damaging you by giving you free stuff.
I just thought the symmetrical effects were fine here because the last challenge said "deprives an opponent of a resource" and this one says "punishes a player".
And here we go again with confusions I actually love the challenges not being so straightforward right now but clarifications are still important.
How does First Response punish a player? I think it is rather a reward - and most of the times as a result of an action caused by opponents (damage inflicted by them).
I think I get where you are going here, but then I'm not sure the term of "punishing" cards is correct.
To be more specific, I see two categories:
- Cards that punish due to a specific action (negative such as Liliana's Caress or positive such as Eidolon of the Great Revel)
- Cards that reward due to a negative action (because there's no way cards like Well of Lost Dreams or Searing Meditation would fit the challenge, but First Response is said to meet the requirements).
So can we get a clarification here please?
(please note that Painful Quandary is also mispelled and the card tag does not work, but it is a good example)
A card that offers a negative response to a players' deliberate action is a card that 'punishes'. Liliana's Caress would not qualify because it enhances the disruptive effect of one player, rather than punish the actions of another player. Another card that would punish would be War's Toll.
I assume since this doesn't say "opponent", the effect can be symmetrical? Also, Tilwin, I'm guessing that First Response is being viewed as "punishing" the opponent for damaging you by giving you free stuff.
You can have a card that punishes both players, or even only yourself.
Not to nitpick but, wouldn't Liliana's Caress punish a player for playing things like Faithless Looting, or a card with cycling (think Living End). I understand that isn't what the card is used for generally, but it can be. Also, it appears that the sub-challenges have changed since yesterday. Correct? I thought one of them was that the card has to be symmetrical. It looks like that is no longer the case. That said, I'm curious if a symmetrical punisher card that could be built around so that it is potentially one-sided, or even beneficial to the player playing it would qualify for the challenge? Such as this card....
Mental Toll
Enchantment (U)
Whenever a creature attacks, that creature's controller puts the top four cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
The cost of war is paid for with more than blood.
I suppose that, since there is no longer a symmetry related challenge, I could change the card to read "Whenever a creature attacks you,...", but I like it how it is, as long as it being beneficial to its controller won't get me a DQ.
Edit: BTW...I will most likely change the card I've submitted to something totally different, but it's still a good example of my question.
Edit2: Just so I'm sure (sorry if I missed it somehow), does my card have to be a continuous affect? Or can it be a one time deal?

Intro deck rares have to be "bad" rares, right? Just getting a clarification on how strong we can make these.
I am not the organizer, nor a judge, but I don't see why we would be required to make a "bad rare". Has it ever been stated that Wizards purposely puts "bad rares" in intro packs? I suppose it's a pretty reasonable question though, considering the only decent intro pack rare that's popping into my head is Blade Splicer. There must be a couple others that I'm missing though.
Edit: BTW...I'm glad to see CryoZenith as a judge for this month. I don't think I've seen Cryo outside of the DCC. Welcome to the MCC! (Although perhaps you participated in the MCC 1 million times before I came around .)

I think you're looking at things from the wrong angle if you're restricting your power level based on intro deck rares being "bad." The fact is, a large chunk of the rares from any given set are not going to be competitively playable, but still fulfill different roles. Part of this challenge is identifying what role does the intro pack rare serve? I would go into more detail, but I don't want to feel like I'm guiding folks to specific designs in the middle of the contest.
Tilwin, sorry to complain, but I have one minor nitpick with something fairly objective in your judging of my card. Yoy took off points for the name Thoughtrender sounding like a verb, but I think you thought I was using the verb "render" when I was actually using the verb "rend", or "to tear something into pieces." Therefore, the name is in fact a noun, "one who rends thoughts."

Anybody know anything on when admirableadmiral's and FortuitousEntity's judgings are coming? It's looking like the May MCC is going to go pretty far into June.
I'm assuming that FortuitousEntity is out. He didn't post crits for the last round, and according to his profile, he hasn't been active since the 26th. Perhaps he'll pop in, but I don't see any reason to wait on him at this point. As far as AA is concerned, I'm sure we'll hear from him soon.
