Snapping Devil 1R
Creature - Devil
1/2
Snapping Devil gets +1/+1 as long as there's an instant card in your graveyard.
Aftermath Revelers 2RR
Creature - Devil
3/2
Haste
Aftermath Revelers gets +2/+2 as long as there's an instant card and a sorcery card in your graveyard.
Disturbed Feast 1B
Instant
Put a 1/1 black Rat creature token into play. If there's a creature card in your graveyard, put an additional two of those tokens into play.
Meat Shortage B
Sorcery
Each player loses 3 life. If there's a creature card in your graveyard, you gain 3 life.
Waning Light 1W
Sorcery
Destroy target artifact or enchantment.
If there's an artifact or enchantment card in your graveyard, draw a card.
Shutter Geist 2U
Creature - Spirit
2/1
Flying
Shutter Geist has flash as long as there's an instant card in your graveyard.
Estwald Diaspora 3G
Creature - Werewolf
4/3
Estwald Diaspora blocks if able.
Estwald Diaspora gets +1/+1 as long as there's a land card in your graveyard.
Wreckage Crab 1U
Creature - Crab
1/2
Wreckage Crab can't be blocked as long as there's an artifact card in your graveyard.
Oath of Vengeance W
Enchantment
Each creature you control gets +1/+1 as long as there's a card in your graveyard that shares a creature type with it.
Snapping Devil - Cute and efficient. Comparable to Sanguinary Mage. I would frankly pick this over the Mage in most scenarios assuming I had one-mana instant burn.
Aftermath Revelers - Vertical cycle material with the previous? I'd like to see the rare. Is that what Bedlam Reveler actually is? Anyway, you can almost guarantee this hits as a 5/4 in the right Limited environment, which makes this a potential high pick; a bomb for four mana is nothing to sneeze at.
Disturbed Feast - Love it.
Meat Shortage - Amazingly disturbing flavor. Also love it. But this is usually a heck of a lot worse than Bump in the Night. Could it be 1B and four-life swings? Flame Rift is playable in certain burn decks in certain formats, so why can't there be a black splash version of that?
Waning Light - Fine. Could this really not be an instant?
Shutter Geist - Fine. Could this really not be a 2/2? Name is pretty evocative though. The flash/instant connection is a genius bit of design there.
Estwald Diaspora - This is very subpar if you're playing it without it pumping itself. Could this stand to be a 4/4 base at uncommon, or else have an additional positive ability, perhaps one that ties into the drawback (simultaneously making the card better and worse) like vigilance or reach?
Wreckage Crab - Fine. Could this really not be a 1/3?
Oath of Vengeance - I really wish this were 1W, Shared Triumph-style, or else were a "for each" type of deal like a Coat of Arms for dead guys.
Sorry for busting your chops about the power level! Every Limited environment needs bad cards, and I also know you from way back and thus know you're a designer of the old school. These cards, as so many of yours do, feel old and new at once. It's a good feeling - comfortable and fun.
Thanks. Always good to hear from you.
Yeah, as you say, I don't really bother keeping up with power creep... I tend to design around the power level of ten years ago and older.
I did adjust some of the cards, though. I reconsidered Oath of Vengeance's cost and I think it's niche enough to go all the way down to W. Flipped the power and toughness on the Werewolves. 1B and 4 life loss for Meat Shortage is tempting. It's weird though... it seems like there's a big difference in value between 3 and 4 direct life loss.
I really like this vein of design a lot, especially when you can get a good flavor connection (Meat Shortage, Disturbed Feast, Shutter Geist). My one caveat is that it would be confusing to play with all these cards in the same environment, since it could be hard to remember which cards key off which types.
