The Lotus creates the most swingy version of feel bad scenarios. If you win the flip, especially early in the game, your opponent feels robbed because you got lucky. If you lose the flip, then you feel bad because the game is over. The card just isn't fun.
The land is interesting but I do agree the downside isn't enough. Maybe have it ETBT?
Why stupid? lol gambling is half of magic and you want to combo its a 50/50 shot you wont lose doing it.
oh wells...
Normally, when people talk about reducing the outcome of the game to a single coin flip, they refer to matchups, not individual cards. Stupid is pretty much the only way to describe a card that comes out on turn 1 and either wins or loses you the game on the spot.
In most cases, you're getting nine uses of that land and then you just never tap it the 10th time. Maybe something like:
Undiscovered Isle of Gems
Land T, gain a poison counter: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. 4: Proliferate. Any player may activate this ability, as a sorcery.
i think the card would not be dangerous to print, since it's not worth playing in a tournament environment and wouldn't have an effect there. but why print such a card?
a chance to get a major advantage (but not a guranteed win) does not balance out against straight up losing the game on the flipside. playing this card is an illogical choice and should only be done for lulz.
could be fixed by making the drawback that you lose all but 1 life?

Are you at all familiar with Ad Nauseam decks, particularly the modern variant? They utilize the aforementioned card alongside Angel's Grace to do pretty much whatever they want. With the OP's current wording, a player could use the mana ability and cast Angel's Grace in response to the ETB trigger, essentially giving you the ability to combo out on turn 1. Believe me when I say this card idea is broken.
ad nuas + angel's grace = game over. HOWEVER, this is not considered broken (and angel's grace isn't even played anymore). If a game winning pair with angel's grace is not broken, then why should something that grants mana (but still not a win) be beoken?

What the heck? How is free mana acceleration equivalent to a five mana draw spell?

YOU WERE THE ONE WHO COMPARED THE TWO IN THE FIRST PLACE! The only thing I said they aren't broken, because they aren't.

How could you have interpreted that comment as comparison, of all things? I was talking about how the two would be dangerous TOGETHER. The only reason I mentioned Ad Nauseam at all was because the previous poster had no idea of how the card could be utilized in competitive play. Geez.

Legendary Artifact
When Lotus of Death enters the battlefield flip a coin.
If you lose the flip, you lose the game.
t, sac: Add three mana of any mana to your mana pool.
Undiscovered Isle of Gems
Land
t, gain a poison counter: add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
Isle- I believe WotC explored this when making Scars and decided it wasn't enough of a drawback.
Isle is too good, as the drawback is meaningless 99% of the time.
