A lot of people thought they might. The problem (or at least one of them) is it meant a lot of tedious flipping in paper magic. Imagine having 3 of these and casting a spell to take all of them out of their sleeves flip them over, put them back in, set them back down tapped. Then you have to think about what colors you will need the next turn so at opponent's end step you spend 30 seconds thinking and tap two lands to get UUUB. It would be worse than fetchlands.
