This is substantially stronger than Kuldotha Phoenix, though, because it recurs for free when you do what red decks already want to do and are already good at. I actually think Ashcloud Phoenix did a fine job of being a transforming Phoenix. If you really have to do it with DFC, though, it should ask you to jump through at least a small hoop and probably have a mana cost, and the back face should do something cool too:
Menmet-Ra the Eternal3RR
Creature — Phoenix (M)
Flying, haste
Menmet-Ra must attack if able.
If Menmet-Ra would die, transform it instead.

Cinnamon Ashes
Artifact
If an instant or sorcery spell you control would deal damage, it deals that much damage plus 1 instead.
When you cast your second instant or sorcery spell in a turn, you may pay 2R. If you do, transform Cinnamon Ashes.
Edited, and slightly nerfed. I play modern, and would like a modern-playable card. None of the phoenixes you guys mentioned are even close to modern-playable.
Plus, the flavor text is awesome, if I do say so myself.

Eon, the Eternal 2RR
Legendary Creature - Phoenix
Flying, Haste
At the beginning of your end step, if Eon, the Eternal is untapped, exile Eon, the Eternal.
If Eon, the Eternal becomes blocked or would die, instead transform it.
"From your ashes, I will rise..."
