Just a mechanic I've been playing around with after my exploration of Access the Machine.
This uses DFC technology to try and create a sense of a "Paradigm Shift" that a revolution creates.
version 1 Iron-Street Worker
Creature - Dwarf Citizen (C)
Revolution (:7mana: : Transform all permanents you control. All creatures you control enter the battlefield transformed. Activate only as a sorcery.)
3/2
---Flip--- Iron-Street Enforcer
{RED} Creature - Dwarf Warrior (C)
6/4
Version 2
Split up the abilities across the 2 sides to reduce tracking complexity.
This also means if you kill all the revolutionaries that the revolution is put down and it has to be started again.
Iron-Street Worker
Creature - Dwarf Citizen (C)
Revolution (7: Transform all permanents with Revolution you control.) He grumbles as he smiths trinkets for the perfumed ponces in the castle.
3/2
---Flip--- Iron-Street Brute
{RED} Creature - Dwarf Warrior (C)
Creatures you control with revolution enter the battlefield transformed When in his heart he knows his hammer was made for war.
6/4
Version 3
Changed to a non-mana cost to reduce feel bads from stopping a revolution and reduce parasiticness and un-interactivity of the mechanic.
Iron-Street Worker
Creature - Dwarf Citizen (C)
Revolution (Tap three untapped creature you control: Transform all permanents with Revolution you control.) He grumbles as he smiths trinkets for the perfumed ponces in the castle.
3/2
---Flip--- Iron-Street Brute
{RED} Creature - Dwarf Warrior (C)
Creatures you control with revolution enter the battlefield transformed When in his heart he knows his hammer was made for war.
6/4
I really don't like version 1 for the same reason that you state -- the extra tracking involved after the revolution is often hard to remember.
I like both versions 2 and 3. I think I might like version 3 just a tad bit more than version 2, only because it does make more sense for a bigger board presence to be the cause of a revolution rather than a stockpile of mana.
You could even have something like the following if you wanted:
"When (or whenever, depending on the version you go with) this permanent starts a revolution and transforms into ~, ..."

How to use card tags (please use them for everybody's sanity)
[c]Lightning Bolt[/c] -> Lightning Bolt
[c=Lightning Bolt]Apple Pie[/c] -> Apple Pie
Vowels-Only Format Minimum deck size: 60 Maximum number of identical cards: 4 Ban list: Cards whose English names begin with a consonant, Unglued and Unhinged cards, cards involving ante, Ancestral Recall
The first version is the most interesting in terms of gameplay but does have the comprehension and memory issue you discussed, although it's not insurmountable; just seeing that you have one revolutionary around transformed reminds you that the revolution is still going on, and it's a big one-time activation in presumably the mid to late game.
Do I like this better than access the machine? Yes for gameplay, no for flavor. In the end, you gotta choose which iteration is right for you. The latest access is much better and more refined compared to the original, which was a great concept but was still too raw.
I like version 3. You need a lot of creatures before you can start a revolution. As long as you have at least one creature with revolution transformed, all future creatures with revolution immediately join in the revolt. So your opponent needs to kill all of your revolutionaries to stop the revolt.
Something to consider: It might be good to restrict the activated ability to sorcery speed so you can't revolt as a combat trick and can't revolt during your opponent's end step to reduce the cost of tapping your creatures.

Great render and seems like a fine execution. Revolutionaries read a bit like a creature type there. Perhaps you could make it one sort of how they did werewolves?
certainly a possibility if the extra CC leap is too much.
What? You're not making revolutionary a creature type? When I suggested the templating I was assuming you'd do the werewolf trick. Why wouldn't you do that?

I was thinking you could have the mechanic show non-revolutionaries transforming (how the police force turns into a roit squad or something) but when I started designing them I didn't come up with anything I liked. So I'll probably move to your suggestion of a creature type.
One vote for not making it a creature type is that I can see two flavors for it:
1.) Revolution as in rebellion.
2.) Revolution as in paradigm shift of technology. (Industrial Revolution)
The latter would work great on noncreature artifacts, flavorfully, but if we switch it to a creature type the type would be unable to show up on noncreature artifacts. So...

As a creature type you also have to consider the interaction with Conspiracy effects which could inadvertently shut down your revolutionaries or enable weird things with existing double-faced cards.
As a creature type you also have to consider the interaction with Conspiracy effects which could inadvertently shut down your revolutionaries or enable weird things with existing double-faced cards.
That niche interaction also applies to Allies, Slivers and a bunch of other mechanics. It certainly not something that I care about when deciding wording compared to what has lower comprehension and tracking complexity.
I really like the industrial revolution idea, but I wouldn't want the word "revolution" to have two different flavor meanings in the same set. If it was block 1 vs. block 2, you could simply evolve the mechanic similar to how morph evolved and changed in Khans of Tarkir block so that it worked for artifacts in set 2.
Stairc: No yeah, I was talking about for hypothetically two different blocks.
And I don't know, if the mechanic is specifically name-dropping a creature type, how could you possible manipulate the mechanic to then work for artifacts in a hypothetical block 2?

Ah I see, alright. That would totally work. Good idea Stairc.
