I'll withhold judgment until I see more of Nexus's context - because that is not the same as the context of Dominaria and Icefall - but let me just say, Barry's Land is a weird thing to put in a block that has not domain but spectrum.

It seems a little odd to have both over the same block... I know they have different needs to them, and the Karoo Creatures you made are really cool for spectrum, but because the two have such similar purpose using both of them doesn't feel right to me. Have you tried fitting Domain into Dominaria and couldn't get it to work? Is there any true reason for having both these mechanics, and what are you doing to separate them so they don't feel like clones of each other?
Have you tried fitting Domain into Dominaria and couldn't get it to work?
Actually, I made a very conscious decision early-on NOT to even bother with domain in this block. And spectrum has so far exceeded every expectation I had for it. So this decision isn't really about a deficiency with spectrum or a desire to retread the path that domain has followed before.
But as I've started to understand what Nexus is going to be, it became super obvious that domain was a perfect fit. There are also a lot of "dead" designs in my Dominaria file that I had to axe because they walked a very similar line to spectrum, but which I can now port to Nexus without too much concern. To be clear, the Blue Hurricanes, Task, and some of the other distinctive cycles are still continuing throughout the block.
And this on the night when Tabak says on Tumblr that the sixth basic is a closed issue.
I'm not so worried about that. Some of the things that might make it impossible for WotC don't make it impossible for me. That, and I don't really think it's impossible. I believe they're just thinking about the problem too narrowly.
Hmm. That's... interesting. I like it from a flavor perspective, and I suppose I don't particularly object from a mechanical perspective, but I have some more logistical questions. Will each set introduce 4 new basic land names per color or one?
For constructed, will only basic lands with a name printed in the legal sets be legal? If so, does this mean that standard would eventually see Swamp et al. rotate from legality?
For limited, which basic land names are mandatory to supply and which basic land names are allowable to supply for any given draft format? It's technically optimal gameplaywise to split your basic lands evenly among every possible name (in JBT for example, Bile Blight's existence imposes this restriction on every deck just in case they get an Anthousa Daring Thiefed to them), so those sets basically have to be the same.

So, i wasn't playing Magic when Domain was first introduced, along with Barry's land. What problems occurred there to halt the creation of this 6th basic land, and (@Guesswork) what measures have you taken to avoid the same pitfalls that befell WotC the first time around?

I think one big, surprisingly nontrivial problem is, what do you call Barry's Land? "Cave" doesn't feel right. "Desert" has always been the most evocative choice, but they blew it way back in the first expansion. Well, this approach un-blows it.
Another one of the concerns is, what does it do to cards like Coalition Victory? Well, I knew my answer to that when I started this block. It was, in fact, one of the questions that prompted me to dream up the block's storyline in the first place. Barry's Land, plus the sixth color (that's only on one card in the whole block) mean that Coalition Victory is worse. It means that Dream Thrush is better. It means that future sets may have to account for Deserts in their design, up to the point of including Deserts in the set even when they aren't particularly pertinent to the mechanics. Basically, I'm very happy to change the fundamentals.
Names are a very scarce resource. I don't like the idea of using twenty a block on functional reprints of the basic lands.
Funny, I actually see them as a near-infinite resource. Flavor-wise, I think Magic has been very poor at communicating a sense of place in each of their sets, because they're traditionally limited to communicating place names using whatever nonbasics are in the set. And then, they adopt a policy of trying to make those nonbasics feel as generic as possible so that they're reprint-ready. I mean, there are hundreds of named locations in Magic that have never been represented on a card. And any number of those locations could support multiple land names. I don't think we're going to run out.
I actually really like that concept, although I really hate the thought of having to buy new 'basic' lands to keep playing standard, even if it is only one every two years. But for custom sets, it really ties it together well, and I honestly wouldn't mind using that system myself.
I also agree the names wouldn't run out. Sure, if you only tried using generic names like "Windy Coast" or "West Isle" you'd get in trouble fast, but if all your names are tied to plane-specific places, then there really is an unlimited number of names for them.
I have two questions though - would Barry's Land get 'reprinted' every single block, or would it only be in Nexus due to Domain? I ask this because there honestly isn't any use for it unless its tied to a mechanic, as colorless mana is strictly worse than colored mana.
And secondly, would all sets throughout a block contain these basic lands in order to help players get them more quickly? With this change, they inherently have more value than regular basic lands, which makes me feel it may be necessary - you could do 4 of each in the first set, then 2 of each reprinted for the second, and the other lot of 2 reprinted for the third in that case.

That's sort of what I'm doing in Dominaria-Icefall-Nexus with snow lands anyway, so... maybe?
The way I'm seeing it, Barry's Land / Deserts would be an evergreen thing. Not that they'd have to be in every set, but they could be. And I think that positions them nicely to become more meaningful outside the narrow context of domain. Since they're generally much worse than basic lands, you could really print some mechanics that reward you for playing them. Plus, you know, it would be fun to eventually bring back these guys in a meaningful way (don't worry, they're not in Nexus.)
Thought up another, more random question: When do your sets take place in the mtg canon, if you've thought about it at all. As in, recently after the events of RTR/Theros, in the past, or in the future after whatever couple sets wizards throws out next? Your set is really interesting from a lot of points, so I'm curious as to whether or not you have a plan for this.

Gosh, when I started this (more than a year ago, now,) it was meant to directly follow the current block chronologically (RTR, I guess?)
Given that I'm not entirely sure where the RTR / Theros / Khans stories fall in the general timeframe of things, it's hard for me to say exactly where it falls now. In the near future.
It has to take place long enough after Time Spiral for most (but not necessarily all) of the major mortal characters from that block to have died from natural causes. For example, the fact that Radha has died in old age since the last time we saw Dominaria is a major plot point for the Icefall story. But, we know at the very least that Venser existed as a contemporary of current plotline characters for a while, so that raises some more questions about how to interpret the passage of time. It's messy. But I think my internal assumption has been 100 years post-Time-Spiral.
Also, DOM block and CTG block take place at roughly the same time, chronologically.
While I know storyline buffs have their opinion about what that means for the progression of time on Kamigawa, Wizards has previously stated that the time frame established in earlier novels is not necessarily canon. In any case, CtG also takes place AT LEAST a few generations after the events of Kamigawa. I have it pegged at about 100 years as well, currently. I know some storyline estimates would have it at more than 1000, but I'd rather just rewrite canon than have to deal with stupid Medieval stasis reasoning.
Even if you don't want to print them in standard legal sets, I think Plains et al. should be kept Standard legal via some special rule. It's very convenient for casual or returning players to know that the land they're using will stay legal forever.

Yeah, I figure it can be handled via DCI rules or whatever. I'm sure there's an implementation for it that makes sense.
Something I hadn't noticed until today, when you posted Dunechase:
If every land on the battlefield has a different name, it takes more mental energy to process which ones do and don't have nonmana activated abilities at a glance. This has the potential to lead to slow play and unfun moments for less skilled players.
Making all basics full-art does mitigate this somewhat, but is this something you plan to do for each of your custom sets into perpetuity?

That's definitely the right question!
The answer is: all of the basic lands in Nexus will have place-specific names.
To put it a different way: if my DOM-XI-CTG meta were dropped into the normal Magic release calendar, Dominaria would be the last-ever Magic set to contain Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, or Forest. And Icefall would be the last-ever set to contain Snow-Covered Plains, Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Swamp, Snow-Covered Mountain, or Snow-Covered Forest. This change affects XI, Call to Glory, Murmurs from Beyond, and the 3rd set of CtG block as well.
For constructed, will only basic lands with a name printed in the legal sets be legal? If so, does this mean that standard would eventually see Swamp et al. rotate from legality?

Honestly, it's been something I've been anticipating since Zendikar. Maybe even Unglued.
It also bears mentioning that basic creatures are getting the same treatment:
