Been messing around with the flashback mechanic.
Just wondering if this works and if it is possible design space.
Word of the Shield2W
Enchantment - Aura {C}
When Word of the shield enters the battlefield, put a 1/1 white Soldier creature token onto the battlefield.
Enchanted creature gets +1/+2
Flashback W(You may cast this card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)
So when you flash this back you get the soldier but it exiles itself so you don't get the +1/+2.
I like it. It works within the rules because evoke already exists. (Wispmare) The only problem I see is limited design space, as it has to have an EtB effect, but it would be really good for a small mechanic in a set. In fact, I was doing a similar thing myself some time ago, but with creatures instead. I say go for it.
702.33a [Flashback] represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player's graveyard and another that functions while the card is on the stack. "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack." Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2e-g.
You would either have to edit the rules for flashback (very simple, really) or make a new keyword for it. I'd go with the new keyword route, personally.

How to use card tags (please use them for everybody's sanity)
[c]Lightning Bolt[/c] -> Lightning Bolt
[c=Lightning Bolt]Apple Pie[/c] -> Apple Pie
Vowels-Only Format Minimum deck size: 60 Maximum number of identical cards: 4 Ban list: Cards whose English names begin with a consonant, Unglued and Unhinged cards, cards involving ante, Ancestral Recall
The problem with a new keyword is that when on an instance or sorcery card it is exactly the same as flashback.
I'll probably make an edit to flashback for now and see if players get how it works.
I could change the reminder text on permanents is: (You may cast this card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. When it enters the battlefield, exile it.)
If you are looking for an Aura mechanic, it seems like converting this into an ability word like channel would have better design space.
This isn't actually just for auras, thats just the example I'm using. I want to expand flashback to all nonland cardtypes and using a new mechanic would overlap too much with flashback when placed on instants and sorceries.
@Secretinfiltator: I know I could use a cast trigger but doesn't that have weird corner cases like still working even if the spell is countered?

Ah, in that case, you can just add rules for flashback like you did in your opening post then.
702.33. Flashback
702.33a* [Flashback] represents two or more static abilities, depending on the type of card it's on: one that functions while the card is in a player's graveyard, and one or more that function while the card is on the stack and/or the battlefield.
702.33b On instants and sorceries, "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack."
702.33c* On nonland permanent cards, "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost", "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would be put into a zone other than the battlefield", and "When this enters the battlefield, if the flashback cost was paid, exile it."
702.33d* On land cards, "Flashback [cost]" means "You may play this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] as you play it" and "When this enters the battlefield, if the flashback cost was paid, exile it."
702.33e* Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2e-g.
@Secretinfiltator: I know I could use a cast trigger but doesn't that have weird corner cases like still working even if the spell is countered?
Yes. Once an "on-cast" ability triggers, the spell being countered doesn't prevent the ability from resolving.

Because unearth can't be used on all card types as cleanly as expanding flashback
How do you mean? Unless I'm missing something it seems almost perfectly like a 'flashback for creatures' and seems like for the same reason it could be applied with almost no change to other permanents (other than removing haste.) I can understand if you don't want it to have the functionality of sticking around for a turn, but honestly that seems like it would only serve to open up additional design space.
Using unearth on a toughness pumping Aura card would have the Armor of Thorns problem. Unearth would trigger and exile the Aura at the end step, but any damage on the enchanted creature doesn't wear off until a little later at the cleanup step.
