For Shandalar, or Nazura, depending on where these fit best:
Internal Wrath4R
Sorcery (Rare)
Each creature deals damage equal to its power to itself. Sometimes the fires of wrath can burn one from the inside out.
I made a card awhile back called Internal Conflict, that essentially did this same thing except was an uncommon spot removal that targeted one creature. I started thinking to myself, this could be something for red, kind of a slice of the color that hasn't been looked at entirely. The idea is that the inner-fires of ones soul and rage comes back to burn them. Their power harms them.
Tideswell Mystic3U
Creature - Merfolk Wizard (Rare)
Islandwalk
Whenever you tap an island for mana, add U to your mana pool. The town feared the high tide for the monsters it brought to shore. The Merfolk loved the high tide for the same reason.
2/2
High Tide has a high spot on the shelves of my heart. I've always loved the card, and even though many people may not love it and think it breaks the color pie, I for one believe it is perfect. It might be one of the most flavorful cards of all time, and in homage to it I think Tideswell Mystic is the ultimate advocate.
Infernal Wrath sounds more Black than it does Red, although Red has seen its share of Devils recently. The card is essentially a color-shifted Wave of Reckoning, so no quibbles with the mana cost.
Infernal Wrath sounds black, yes, but the card's name is actually Internal Wrath Haha it's okay though. I was trying to think of like a Soul's Flame burning too hot and creatures hurting themselves because of it. Like, being too full of rage. And I didn't even know Wave of Reckoning existed! Holy cow that's awesome!
I do really like the Internal Wrath card. How it rewards you for using high toughness creatures creates a interesting incentive to go for red/white or red/blue.
High Tide is a card I like as well, but at the moment that effect is probably black and maybe red. By the way, I don't know why black gets this effect. It's swamp matters theme seems like a obsolete concept of black being a 'all or nothing' color. I mean, I remember back in 97~99 the guy who lectured me how to play even told me "black is the strongest color by itself but it's disadvantage is it's harder to splash", something that was actually true when black staple cards were all overpowered and costed BB and BBB. To this day I wonder if that was just a coincidence or was a design decision.
Tideswell Mystic is nice and very close to Crypt Ghast but in certain way getting the effect permanently doesn't feel like a High Tide at all.
Thanks! I feel like Tideswell Mystic is one of those flavor cards that fits into a single niche, something like Ola's Temple, something that is kind of out of the colors but fits well enough flavorfully and in doing so allows it to be printed. It's not very strong, like crypt Ghast, so it's not a pain to deal with. I think that extra mana should allow for some fun Kraken, Serpent and Leviathan decks!
