This is the twenty-sixth round of cards from my custom set, Ruination, following a plausible timeline after the establishment of New Phyrexia, where the Praetors fight amongst themselves.
I'm looking for constructive feedback with these specific focuses:
(1) Individual card balance & elegance
(2) Mechanical soundness
(3) Grammer, design, syntax errors
Pack of the Red Fang3G - Updated below
Creature - Wolf {U}
Whenever a creature with power greater than Pack of the Red Fang’s power enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on Pack of the Red Fang.
3/3
Mounting RageR
Enchantment - Aura {C}
Enchant creature
During your upkeep, put a rage counter on Mounting Rage.
The enchanted creature gets +1/+0 for each rage counter on Mounting Rage.
**This card has been substituted into Ruination in place of Hailfire Juggernaut, who has been repurposed in the next set. Manifestation of Rage4RR - Updated
Creature - Elemental {R}
Flying
During each player’s upkeep, Manifestation of Rage deals 3 damage to another target creature chosen at random.
5/4
Aura of Frost1U - Updated
Enchantment - Aura {U}
Enchant creature
Whenever the enchanted creature is dealt combat damage by a creature, tap that creature. It does not untap during its controller’s next untap step.
1.) The Pack doesn't really feel like a Pack, flavor-wise. Maybe it should start as a 2/2, and put a 2/2 green Wolf token onto the battlefield each time it triggers? I dunno, I just don't like the +1/+1 counters representing additional wolves.
2.) Mounting Rage seems like a flavor win. I like it a lot. The problem is, it essentially does nothing the turn you cast it. Maybe have it grant trample or haste, just for the sake of doing something right off the bat?
3.) Drakeling Firestarter should be a Devil or an Imp. That would make more sense than a Drake in red these days.
4.) Berserker Drake, in all honesty, feels like it could be an Efreet, flavor-wise. Again, Drake isn't really a red creature type, and this card better matches the chaos effects found on Efreets.
5.) Aura of Frost is a very neat card. I like it a lot. The flavor is definitely a home run. Most of the time, it'll either do nothing, though, or be a one shot effect. Thus, I think it could actually be costed at 1U and still be fair, though I may be wrong on this one.
Pack of the Red Fang: Interesting tension, though I can't say if that will make it play well. I would keep it as is, at least until testing.
Mounting Rage: I think you could have the +X/+0 always on. The creature could be angry when blocking, after all. Adding Trample wouldn't be a bad idea. First Strike would make it a much more powerful card, and might up the mana cost.
Red Drakes are pretty rare these days, but it's your call on the creature type for the two Drakes. Maybe Wyvern or Manticore for the big one. They don't get used much. As for Efreeti/ Djinni, those fit the card's flavor but not the setting's flavor.
Aura of Frost: I think it could be 1U. Could also tweak to trigger from any damage, rather than just combat. Would make a decent limited combo if there are any pingers in the set.
Scarred Howler3G
Creature - Wolf {U}
Whenever a creature with power greater than Scarred Howler’s power comes into play, put a green 2/2 Wolf token onto the battlefield.
2/2
I've made changes to the cards listed above based on feedback.
Hey, the Pack has GDS2's Evolve mechanic! I think its remake is interesting too, what with the lack of diminishing return.
I think Mounting rage could use a counter upon enchanting. Even a CMC1 red common aura needs to do something right off. I disagree With DrKobold about trample, though. Not only is it not appropriate for a CMC1 red common with stat boosting, but modern Red auras in general do not grant trample.
Circeus's idea is probably better than Trample. The new wolf is fine, though you might change it to not trigger from token creatures. There are some potential infinite combos, including at least one infinite loop with Juniper Order Ranger. If you want to enable that kind of thing, it's fine, but it is the kind of thing you should be aware of.
He's saying if the Howler and the Ranger are both in play, one Howler trigger would trigger an infinite number of triggers, because a 2/2 wolf would enter the battlefield as a 3/3.
How about this for Mounting Rage?
Mounting RageR
Enchantment - Aura {C}
Enchant creature
The enchanted creature has haste.
Whenever the enchanted creature attacks, put a rage counter on Mounting Rage.
The enchanted creature gets +1/+0 for each rage counter on Mounting Rage.
Actually I think it doesn't loop with juniper order ranger, but something like sensory deprivation makes it go infinite by making it trigger from it's own wolf token.
Perhaps it's best to set a "nontoken" restriction on the trigger...
