how about the Absorb keyword? yellow should have tolerance to minor pain.
The problem with the absorb keyword is not that the mechanic doesn't fit into "yellow", but that it is a narrow keyword with barely any depth and possibly not deserving a keyword at all.

There are twothree major issues with your yellow, bothall of which involve confusion. The first of these is the one MaRo always harps on, and why yellow can't happen at all: the existence of a yellow/gold frame for multicolored cards. The second reason is {Y} already exists as part of the mana alphabet (xy). Thus, the use of {Y} for any color would mess up the rules beyond belief. The third issue is your hourglass mana symbol. The hourglass is used as a set symbol for Time Spiral. Magic Set Editor uses {L} and a lightning bolt for yellow because of thisthese.
... Magic Set Editor uses {L} and a lightning bolt for yellow because of thisthese.
Actually, I use a lightning theme for yellow in my magic-new-extra template because that's what I got first from users. I've been considering asking kjoppy for his entire yellow theme to switch to it, or provide it as an alternative.
If you do, please make him change the mana code from {Y} and the mana symbol to something other than an hourglass. Perhaps, the code could be {D} for desert and the symbol a scorpion since orange is already using a camel.
This was back in 2012? I'm sorry I missed it.
This whole project is a wonderful examination of extending the mechanics and thematics of Black. I would be very happy to see these ideas used to increment the depth of black designs (and the designs of Black characters).
Some of the concepts, however, are in conflict. Is Yellow about recognizing unexpected potential, or about survival? One of these has to be more prime than the other. If it is the latter, Yellow is only a variant on Black (but nonetheless interesting). If it is the former, this is a personality somewhere in the midpoint of Blue and Black.

That's why I suggest using orange rather than yellow. It has (at least) two benefits: One it doesn't clash with with gold as much, two it ties into the history of orange as the desert color which is probably the most popular "seventh" color/basic land.

You could even do a upkeep removal card, if you want to to do the sands of time idea a la Eon Hub.
Otherwise, I like the idea that the yellow creatures get blown away by vanishing. Pretty cool idea, and I think I want to be included in the project :).
I like the Eon Hub idea. Do you have anything particular suitable to Yellow in mind?
If you want to be involved posting ideas here seems like the way to go. If you really want to get into it I can share my database with you and we can focus on releasing an Alpha set, or something to that effect. PM me if you want to go that route. I have played with Yellow cards casually and it's been great. Very good reception from other players.

Regarding the multicolored gold card frames, I really don't think they look much like the yellow frame I've been using. Check the original post, I attached an example frame there.
...please make him change ... the mana symbol to something other than an hourglass.
Why are you talking about me as if I'm not here?
I solicited suggestions for the mana symbol from the community here, and the responses I got strongly favored the hourglass. I do like it, but I always felt it was slightly too specific to be a good mana symbol. If you look at post #18 you can see my original idea for the symbol. It was discarded as looking too much like . I do not like the lightning bolt, but if you have another suggestion please share.
Perhaps, the code could be {D} for desert and the symbol a scorpion since orange is already using a camel.
That's actually how I have MSE set up. I didn't use {D} here because I thought it would confuse people. As for orange/scorpion, I don't really like it. The scorpion is somewhat too specific, and orange is kind of ugly IMO. Can others weigh in on this?
This was back in 2012? I'm sorry I missed it. This whole project is a wonderful examination of extending the mechanics and thematics of Black. I would be very happy to see these ideas used to increment the depth of black designs (and the designs of Black characters).
I see Yellow as sitting in between black and blue. Blue's pie section is kind of big.
I think survival and unexpected potential are actually very complementary characteristics. Why do you suggest that Yellow must center around a single thematic element? Do other colors do so?
"Survival" means prioritizing it above all else. Valuing unexpected potential means investing in it even to an apparent loss. One of these values must defeat the other. If you simply meant "looking where others do not, so long as it aligns with my other interests," then that's not a thematic element at all; the other interests are, and this habit of playing like Johnny is merely a habit.
The colors do have singular elements. Blue is about knowledge. Black is about power. White is about Order. Red is about action. All other components of those colors are so possessed in virtue of servicing that element. Because each color is motivated by a particular way of life.
Your 'yellow' individual is circumscribed by one color or another, wherever his values lie. You might argue that yellow's identity be splintered off from what is understood to be the other colors (taking something from blue?), but there is a reason to treat the five colors as divided into five by something basic and real prior to our discussion. Since I won't give that reason here though (for reasons), I leave this debate at rest.
I'm sure many would rejoice to carve up blue's mechanics, but you do need to be consistent.

So... ask! I've contacted you several times before in my quest to hack MSE* so we're more or less best friends now. You can call me any time
Very well - would you mind sharing your images for the frames, mana symbols, and watermarks if you have them? I'm not sure what exactly I'll do with them, but I'm interested.

"Survival" means prioritizing it above all else. Valuing unexpected potential means investing in it even to an apparent loss. One of these values must defeat the other.
I think I understand what you're saying about the conflict between survival and valuing unexpected potential. Still, my intuition says these are not really at odds. The idea is inspired by a creature that lives in a harsh environment. Survival is its main occupation. To achieve this it learns to find value in the seemingly valueless: there is water inside that hard-skinned plant covered with thorns. With no trees for wood to build a shelter, one must look to the potential of the already existing landscape. Get the idea?
as a replacement to introverted, how about conformist? Yellow mages tend to go along with the crowd, never coming up with brilliant ideas until they eventually Fade into Antiquity
I'm trying to base the thematic elements on the lifestyle of a desert dwelling creature. "Conformist" isn't really the right characteristic, because it implies the existence of some kind of social norm. "Introverted" is close; I think we need a word that expresses the idea that Yellow mages don't share information readily. I think "selfish" might be the right word here.

I don't think that's true either. Yellow would not give away freely, but it would gladly trade for the things it needs or wants because they don't come easily for yellow. That's why bazaars are so prolific and important to Middle Eastern culture and even how some capitals were formed.
This is how I see yellow in spoiler below:
I think the singular element you're looking for is "Endurance." Which has several definitions.
1. "the power to withstand hardship or stress". This means yellow creatures can take more hits than other colors. Not necessarily higher toughness, but for instance through damage prevention, such as the Absorb keyword.
2. "a state of surviving; remaining alive". This would be what most of you focused on for yellow. Yellow struggles to survive against all odds.
3. "to last a long time". Where other colors try to win as fast as possible, contrarily yellow is prepared for the long haul. When others would get tired very quickly and get exhausted and fall behind, yellow paces itself for the marathon. That means being resourceful, but not to the point where it hoards things for no reason. The descriptions in the OP says something like yellow doesn't sacrifice things. Here I disagree. Yellow would sacrifice, but not for evil like black. It sacrifices if it helps one survive. Like if yellow was in an emergency, yellow would not hesitate kill his camel if that would save himself. In fact, yellow's resourcefulness makes use of every part of the camel for many different uses. (e.g. its fur to make blanket and tents; meat for food; urine for medicine).
Based on these three points focusing on "endurance" as the singular element on yellow, I see yellow as most resembling W/B/G. Black is resourceful and doesn't hesitate to sacrifice; however, where black does it for evil and malicious things, yellow does it to ensure the game goes on. Part of green's mechanics relate to natural disasters. Yellow's basic land and overall flavor derives from the fact that the land is harsh, so yellow also gets some disaster spells (of the desert flavor). White is currently the major color who gets the most prevention and protection effects. Now, yellow shares a substantial part of that pie.
Some cards that might be yellow: Squandered Resources: Yellow is just as resourceful as black. But where black destroys, yellow generates (i.e. mana or life). Desert Twister: Green doesn't get to kill creatures directly (only seldom), but yellow's disasters can. Lymph Sliver: Assuming Absorb is one of yellow's main keywords. Regardless, damage prevention is part of yellow's pie. Devoted Caretaker: Protection from instants and sorceries. Yellow is able to endure any hardships thrown at it, including the damage from such spells. Spawnbroker: Yellow learnt to survive by trading for the things it lacks but needs or wants. As such, they have become successful merchants.
Why not use orange, which is seen as the desert color, then? Please note that Pichoro uses a camel, which lives in the desert as the mana symbol for orange mana, which is coded as {O}, in his Modern-extra template.
Then that is just a species of Black. It is the kind of thinking you'd get if you lived in a desert wasteland, and all you cared about was yourself. Priority number one is surviving. You've proposed some cards that involve increasing the harshness of the environment to flense off competitors for your scarce resources. All of this is Black.
These may be elements that are denied to black cards in set after set, due to some fixation on an overly narrow concept for black on the part of designers, but the values are properly within its sphere.
No sixth color.

@Horseshoe_Hermit: I have PMed you a rebuttal to your criticism. I decided to not post it here because this thread probably won't really benefit from ongoing argumentation about whether yellow is a good idea. I think we're pretty far past that now. Just look at the cards that have been proposed and I think you'll see that they're really not within the sphere or black or any other color.

That's definitely getting close. Yellow mages are paranoid at their worst.
I had a notion for a card, adapted from one of SecretInfiltrator's prior ideas:
Message received. I won't be a pooh-pooher in your thread while you're being productive, I just had to raise, for my own reasons, the question: Where does the 'six' come from in your design? But it was silly of me to bring -that- discussion here. I might think of it as a worthy discussion, but it's also valid to answer "Because we wanted one more than five."
As I am out of my element in evaluating a set design without a prolonged form of that discussion available, I will withdraw from your thread.
Good luck.

Okay this is a cool idea, however it is too specific and not enough variance is applied.
This would work as a card. But there could not be multiple cards that all do this. Here, this is an example. . .
Scour and Scry - 2Y
Sorcery
Exile the top 6 cards of your library in a pile face down and place 4 time counters on them. Remove a time counter from the pile in each of your upkeeps, then if there are no time counters on the pile, choose up to three cards from that pile and put them into your hand. (the rest remain exiled)
This would provide the same flavor, but not an overbearing mechanic that is all about different levels of card advantage. 7/9/2014 4:38:16 AM
Or maybe a mechanic that has you keep the lands you tap for a spell on your next turn.
7/9/2014 4:38:52 AM
Also, your wording is too complicated, you dont need to say it like that 7/9/2014 4:39:46 AM
Try having a set number of turns, because the way it works right there, it can be too easy to collect gobs and gobs of cards 7/9/2014 4:40:38 AM
yeah just do a simple card no mechanic (sorry im using separate posts for all of these, i need to post some pics. and im new to this sight sooo)
Merged several posts, please try to avoid posting many times in a row. -Gerrard's Mom

This is pretty much Ancestral Vision, especially since you would be picking the 3 cards at random.
A nice thing to give a home in Yellow would be exile. I know white has a nice stake on it already, but its more concerned with exiling creatures, with some artifact/enchantment exile.
Yellow could provide the gap in exile 'interaction' that white lacks, such as exiling artifacts, using exile with time counters (suspend away a creature for 3 turns so it is 'lost') and cards that rely on having an exiled card like M15's Warden of the Beyond. Of the top of my head:
Warden of the Beyond could be changed to Yellow.
(It gets +2/+2 if an opponent owns a card in exile, and has vigilance.)
Fade From Memory - 1Y
Instant
Exile target artifact.
Desert Pilgrimage - 2Y
Sorcery
Exile target creature with three time counters on it. If it doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend.
Pilgrim's Soul - 1Y
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for each card in exile you own. Whenever a permanent enters the battlefield under your control from exile, it gains vigilance until end of turn.
I feel like the theme of finding what is lost in the desert should also carry over to things getting lost in the desert in the first place. Of course it doesn't need to be a major theme or anything, but, if your going to have things like suspend and time counters exiling other stuff makes sense too.
There are a couple of problems I am unsure if anyone has noticed, but, There are a few names that are already cards.
Attrition
Desert Twister
And a few of your cards are worded wrong, but that is okay as long as we get the point.
I would love to help design the cards for a set like this, but you also seem to have a lot of vanilla and not so interesting cards shown here.
You shouldn't make or show any vanilla or boring style cards until you have this playable and functional because those types of cards are easily made and don't add any interest value to those you would show this to. Consider this being a color in which time counters are evergreen, and suspend is their main mechanic along with other ones that you create. You also have built cards made at the power level of sets from like 2000. Most of your cards would not be playable if they appeared in standard with other cards, let alone modern or legacy. Not that your ideas are bad, because this is a really good idea, but at the same time, your ideas are very very rough and lacking in a few areas.
And since your ideas are really good and flavory, i feel that you shouldn't limit your ideas to just desserts. Yes, the basic land type should be called dessert because that is their main source, but think of WHY they might use desserts! Because they draw from the absence of life and the desolation that comes with it. They thrive in isolation, and have the unique ability to draw mana from places normally devoid of any at all.
Compare yellow mages to dessert plants. They grow extremely long roots to reach as far as possible to gather water and nutrients. Thus Yellow mages do the same, being able to draw mana from long ranges.
(also, please make sure that there are enough sand permanents and put SAND before the super-type not the sub-type. Think of Snow permanents.)
I can think of tons of ideas for a new color like this for example:

custom card frames in MSE
As I am out of my element in evaluating a set design without a prolonged form of that discussion available, I will withdraw from your thread.
Good luck.

Or maybe a mechanic that has you keep the lands you tap for a spell on your next turn.

Also, your wording is too complicated, you dont need to say it like that

Try having a set number of turns, because the way it works right there, it can be too easy to collect gobs and gobs of cards

yeah just do a simple card no mechanic (sorry im using separate posts for all of these, i need to post some pics. and im new to this sight sooo)
Merged several posts, please try to avoid posting many times in a row. -Gerrard's Mom
This is pretty much Ancestral Vision, especially since you would be picking the 3 cards at random.
Avant Block: Avant -- Stormfront
