Will there be a contest for designing a new MTGSalvation banner (the one at the top of the page!) anytime soon? I think we need a new one, I think I can do better than the one we have, and I would love to participate in such a contest.
It's not up to me, there are powers above me that decide that.
Alright then, tell me who I can ask about it then, as I see no other place better than here in this forum area.
I can take it up with the artwork admins. i'll throw up a thread about it right now. Don't expect a yes though, the last contest we had to change the banner was only allowed as a temporary change. The winner had their submission up for a week.

I do remember the contest, and the voting, and then not catching it when it was actually put up for that week. I missed out on my reward.
I did get a courteous pm from Hannes following one from Avatar of Kokusho in which the perma-header idea was suggested too, but was not likely going to happen. They did change the mana circles arrangement soon after, and the Angel/Fireball banner has started to grow on me, honestly.
It was a fun first/last MTGS contest (work/study consumes my life still), but I did get to do another painting recently for that Wizards AofA contest (also fun). And when time permits, I'd like to participate in some of the ones here.
*edit: I just realized the old banner is still in my sig area. And I'm pretty sure there are too many layer effects on the MTGSalvation part (though I still like the letterform).
art contest idea- 1.design a meal for a planes walker (you only have to include the plate and some foods on it, table cloth optional)--myfave--!
2.design a mana symbol for multi colored mana costs blue/black red/green ect.
3. design a land card, but each month has to be relevant to the current season. --second fave--
4. redesign a planes walker, as the opposite gender.
5. mimic an artists style and redo a card not done by them.
6. redesign some of the butt ugly alpha and beta cards and make them not butt ugly (please)
6. redesign some of the butt ugly alpha and beta cards and make them not butt ugly (please)
This is a stupendous idea. I would be much more inclined to participate in this, every month. I think that if people have to think too much about what they are going to draw, they are less inclined to participate. An existing card is a great sprinboard for creative work, without making the project seem too open ended.
I'll be looking at suggestions soon and will be on top of the contests. Give it some time, so I can learn the formating of the contests and get it back on track, but I'm glad they put me in charge so I can help wherever I am needed. Keep the suggestions coming in.
While it looks like almost every single contest has been Magic themed, I'm wondering if this is some kind of unwritten rule. I'm going to keep the trend going but I will desperately need ideas.
The first post has been updated with the past themes for both artwork and photoshop contests. Links to the individual contests will eventually follow. Feel free to discuss what you liked and didn't like and what you'd like to see again. Taking information from this thread, I have made a list of the suggestions.

Using the cover art created, Template a cover for the Magic :: RPG book.
What about something along the lines of what Worth1000 does? We've inserted real world items into magic art before (Nov. 2008), but what about inserting magic art/creatures into the real world? I'd suggest a contest in which we insert a creature or planeswalker into a historical image. For example, Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir in Lincoln's place in this image.
Along the same lines, I'd also like to suggest a contest in which we insert a creature, planeswalker, spell, etc. into other works of art. For example, maybe dropping a Lightning Bolt between the fingers in this famous section of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling by Michelangelo.

"If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself." - Martin Heidegger
I thought about that, I'm not sure if it could be condensed into a single contest or not. It is possible as a theme if enough people express an interest. Here are a few more ideas for the photoshop contest ::
1) Revist the deck box contest and create deck boxes for a netdeck or a custom deck
2) Uno deck (I hinted at it earlier, but am waiting a while on it)
3) Design the Logo and expansion symbol for a made up duel deck or special set. (Ajani vs. Urza or something like that)
4) Redesign the back of a magic card like they were going to do (I.E different for each block)
5) Create a new Vanguard Template
6) Create a better Space: The conversion template
7) Create a new textless Template or Token Template
8) Create a card frame for purple cards
9) Make unique frames for hybrid cards
Draw a creature that would have X ability, where X is an evergreen keyword. Trample, haste, first strike, etc.
Illustrate a mill spell.
Illustrate a burn spell.
Illustrate a planeswalker of your choosing in a different color.
Illustrate yourself as a planeswalker.
Illustrate a Legendary Creature at a different age (ie, what would Hanna look like at 70?)
It's summer, which means swimwear season. Draw your favorite character cooling off.
Illustrate a piece of treasure that might be found in Zendikar (Artifact, obv.)
Illustrate a part of your favorite plane.
For Lights Block, Contraptions are in! What do they look like?
Wizards is looking for art for You Make the Card 17! But in order to qualify, your art must include a picture of WotC staff, a Pro Player, or a MTGS Moderator! Be sure to include a picture of who it is.
Illustrate a card that could be based off of your username.
What if real life buildings existed in the Magic Universe?
Draw a chef that would exist in the Magic Universe (use Recycle as Inspiration).
Illustrate a spell that would make an opponent's creature leave the battlefield (bounce, removal, sacrifice, blink, etc.).
Wizards of the Coast lost all their online artwork! They desperately need new artwork for tokens. Illustrate your favorite!
WotC still hasn't gotten their act together. Design new art for their avatars!
D'Oh! MODO just can't handle the awesome of the Un-Set Art. Pick your favorite and reinterpret it!
Find a picture of your home town and reinterpret it as a Magic plane!
It's the Consumer Artifacts Show! Design the latest product that your favorite Artificer would put on display for the public.
Photoshop Contest Ideas::
Wizards of the Coast is teaming up with your favorite restaurant to market Magic. Design a combo meal for the restaurant.
Design the logo for the next expansion of Duel of the Planeswalkers.
Wizards of the Coast is making an action movie. Put your favorite action star in a Magic-themed scene.
Design the expansion symbol for one of the sets in the custom card creation forum.
What if your favorite magic creature was made out of rubber?
It's Sports Season! Design a logo for a Magic-Themed Team. Is it going to be the Tolarian Academy Paradoxes? Or the Takenuma Rats? You decide!
Design a logo for the MTG Salvation Open Series.
What if famous creatures from Magic attacked a major metropolitan cities ala Godzilla?
What if Urza and Mishra worked for a major real-world retailer? Show a Magic artifact with real-world roots.
Magic Spokes-models. Pick a creature and have them endorse a real-world product.
Your favorite celebrities as Magic Legends. There's always been discussion on who would play whom. Now show us!
Design a Christmas Card from WotC.
Not sure if this is the way to do this but I suggest that we have more contests in the future.
It seems that all the contest stopped, what happened?

Yeah it would seriously be great to have someone manage this forum again.
I was wondering what was happening, and since I had no answer for the P.M. I sent SB4, I thought this forum was just dead. And I felt noone really cared. Thing is: the more we wait for a solution, the closer we get to the contests' death.
And I finally had enough time to enter -_-.
Its not that no one cares.
MTGS has a very strong "don't act like a mod" policy. When you start acting a like a mod (even reminding someone to follow rules) you get a warning.
Additionally, a non-mod taking over the contests would be like saying, "you guys aren't doing your job, so we'll do it ourselves." I don't think anyone wants to cross this line just yet, so we wait with crossed fingers.

Oh I didn't intend anyone to step ond mods' responsabilities and work. But I am very surprised that, since the last launched contest (March it seems), we didn't seem to have gotten any kind of notice from the mods concerning the future of the contests and noone even commented on that lack of information. That's what my "noone cares" went for. I tried a PM to SB4, but beyond that I don't know what could be done. Mods surelt know very well what's (not) happening here, so I'm not even sure we should ask them. Maybe I missed something...
The Admin for art is looking into a solution for the art forum, at least that's what he said on his help desk.
I think there is no law against us issuing an un-official challenge, if people want to post art.

yeah the mods are aware of whats happening, I don't think anyone would have problems posting the contest, thats what happened to the weekly contest in the sig shop thread. I'd prefer for this not to die.
By the way I've comented in the not enough mods thread and a helpdesk and I also PMed the admins so they know for sure.

No problem. The catch is that I want to get the contests back on a regular cycle, so I don't plan to start new ones until the first of the month. In the meantime, I'm going to do some planning and send the "open" contests to poll. I've already done Februrary, and March isn't far behind.
Does this mean a new contest will be open the 1st day of August?
Yes. That is my intention. I'm sorry it's a ways off, but I think one important thing for these is to get them back on a regular schedule, instead of whatever day I decide to do it. That way, there is no question when a new one should be going up.
I plan to take submissions the whole month, and do voting for two weeks in the following month. Then hound admins for trophies.
And it won't be one contest - it will be at least two (art and photoshop both).
