I've been making figures for commander over the past month. So far I've finished Sliver Hivelord and Ghave, Guru of Spores. I'm currently working on Glissa, the Traitor.
Are there any commanders you think would make particularly good sculptures?
Amazing work there. That hivelord looks sweet. You got that metallic look down for him. Also, are those normal sized cards they are standing on? If so, bravo on details on objects that small. Are you using a sculpy like clay to make these?
As for other commanders... Anything popular, Sharuum... uh... and stuff.. I'm not really sure who's popular. I may have to ponder on this a bit....
Thanks Yeah, those are normal sized cards.
I'm using an epoxy putty called ProCreate to sculpt them. I love using Super Sculpey, but it would be far too brittle at this scale with so many thin sections on the figures. ProCreate flexes instead of shattering.
Holy hell... I hadn't really looked at Sharuum before. Her design is really neat. She has a lot of interesting features that would give me great practice. I might give her a shot before too long
I've never used it in "small" things so i guess it wasn't really a thought in my mind. After I said sharuum, and interesting thought popped into my mind. Create her faceplate on the face of a card to represent her. I may have to try your ProCreate to see how I like it.
Grimgrin, Corpse-Born Might be interesting. As well as the phyrexian praetor's, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite being the most interesting in my opinion. Especially if you want to add fabric to your sculptures. Seems like a natural progression to incorporate other materials into building. Like "plastic" foliage on Doran, the Siege Tower. Mind you, just letting my brain talk for me right now....
What larger projects have you been using sculpey for? ProCreate certainly handles a lot differently than any of the sculpies.
A Sharuum faceplate is a really neat idea. I'd really like to see the result if you decide to create one I've been thinking about possible poses for Sharuum, and that faceplate could make fitting her whole body onto a card difficult. I think the classic Egyptian Sphinx pose would probably work best.
I'd really like to try Grimgrin at some point. He's got a lot of really neat little details, and his bulky shape would be a nice change from the thin characters I've done so far.
Elesh Norn is a good suggestion. She's got such a strange and iconic appearance. I'd probably sculpt the fabric out of putty along with the rest of her.
I do like the idea of incorporating some other materials, though. I use Woodland Scenics Clump Foliage for making terrain pieces, and it could look really good on a treefolk character like Doran or Verdeloth.
In school I spent a lot of time creating "clay" models, as we had to understand 3dimentional sculpting before moving on to 3d programs (Maya/3DS Max/etc). So I spent a lot of time making stuff that stood no less than 12 inches tall.
I'm contemplating Karona as well, since I have created a custom Karona art that I gave to a customer. Though there is not much variation on her anyways. Apparently I enjoy the large face plates, Sharuum, Karona, and Elesh Norn. As for Sharuum's pose, you could go with the post from her card but the Egyptian Sphinx pose would be nice too.
I'm not a sculptor by any definition of the word. As an artist, I'm always looking to mix different mediums into my works. I enjoy mixing 2 things that don't seem to always go together. Not sure I want to go too deeply down the rabbit hole in sculpting just yet. Too many hobbies taking up too much of my free time. Though I do enjoy discussing these types of things as my creative juices tend to flow rather nicely after I think outside of my comfort zone.
I really like Super Sculpey for figures around that size. ProCreate has a curing time, which means you need to work in stages. Polymer clays are really nice since you can keep working on the whole model at once before baking it. They both have their advantages.
I really like the pose from Sharuum's art, but her wings and possibly paws would be sticking out from the sides of the card unless I made her quite small. She'd also end up facing sideways that way, and I'd sort of like the commanders to be facing toward the top of the cards. I suppose that's something that would be good to experiment with, though. Adding something to the base, like Sharrum's pillows, could be a lot more interesting than just attaching the figure to the card.
The faceplates are neat since they're very iconic and it's easy to recognize exactly what character it is. What medium was that Karona you made in? It's definitely neat to work in multiple mediums and blend them together. Getting some experience in one seems to carry over to other artistic endeavors quite well.
