I'm new to alt art cards but I'd love to print out some tokens for use in some games with friends. How do these normally get printed out? Do they need to be printed on heavy duty cardstock for durability, or do people just print them on standard printer paper and put them over an existing card in a sleeve?

Be very careful of this subject. Lots of potential copyright issues with this. I'd say, just use what you can. For personal "proxies" I either write on a land or I type/write out some stuff onto a sheet of paper and place it in a sleeve against a land. I've used old Pokemon cards for this as well.
