I don't mean to make this into a popularity contest, I genuinely want to know who's putting out the best quality work. I know Klug (Not sure if he actually makes alters anymore) and Sandreline put out amazing work and I haVent seen one of their alters pop up on eBay in a while.
Are there other names that are on the level of these two or are klug alters considered head and shoulders above the others?
Just wondering who's work I should be looking out for while wasting time at work.
Thanks!
Depends on what you want. Klug doesn't have to bother with putting things up on ebay, his commission work has him to the point that the work comes to him.
There are many other awesome alterers, but it kind of depends on what you want. I'm a big fan of Claar's work, but if I was actually having work done, Cardkitty is cool too, though I'd probably hit up Galspanic on this forum first. It really depends on what you're wanting.
I'm mostly concerned with tournament playability (which limits what you can do with the design) and quality. I've got some yawg and cardkitty alters and I think I prefer yawg's although they're both obviously really good.
I was just wondering what other alterers do awesome work. I also have some alters from lesser known ppl that I wish I didn't get b/c the paint isn't as smooth or even as the paint on the better alters that I have.
I've had alters done by a few of the bigger artists and have to say, Klug does amazing, tournament quality work. I have personally had problems with Claar, so I would not recommend him.
In my opinion, poxy is one of the best alterers for land cards, along with Marta Molina. They both consistently put out amazingly beautiful landscapes.

Pretty much this.
I think that saying that there's a #1 alterer/alterist (artist) would be as incorrect as saying that there's possible to stablish who's better among, let's say Davinci; Picasso; Dali or Velazquez. Once an artist has dominated the medium/technique, being good or not becomes relegated to a second level of importance, wich means our personal taste regarding a style. So, I could say that Marta and Poxy are my favourite ones regarding landscapes; Demonium is my favourite regarding custom art; Klug is my favourite regarding linework; Sandreline and Cardkitty are my favourites regarding color matching, and Demonium and Seesic are my favourite ones regarding free pallete management. Still, I can't figure out wich one is "the best one" because there are many diverse aspects to be considered, ending up in a personal and subjective appreciation that would allow me to (perhaps) make a choice from a personal perspective.
In general, I think that my personal choice would be Demonium's work, but just because he has a style that's pretty relaxing to my eye.
Yeah art is so subjective, you can't argue or quantify style or aesthetic. Blackbull already summed it up well enough.
We can all recommend likes or dislikes but they might not suit your personal tastes.
You can better gauge quality though, in terms of is artist X or Y delivering a good quality product ( ie you could like their style but maybe it's just too sloppy or unfinished/polished etc. - or someone could have amazing painting skills but bad fundamental drawing/composition skills - like they can't get human proportions right).

BlackBull nailed it on the different areas of focus. I want to second Demonium as one of my personal favorites from the forums (I keep meaning to commission him, ever since those insane Hymn to Tourach alters). I also wanted to add that Ron Spencer does phenomenal alters (albeit more pricey than anyone in the forum), like this one: http://ronspencer.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/fmowerewolf-italy-200dpi.jpg
