If you've ever made a 3D Magic card, wanted to make a 3D Magic card, or just thought they were cool, this is the thread to post it in!
Post your pictures, ask for advice, etc. If you want to have someone make you a card or ask about getting a card you see posted, please keep it to private messages. There's lots of information about the how in the Tutorial Thread but feel free to ask questions here, too.
I've been making 3D CCG cards for a couple of years now, and just recently started doing it with Magic cards. Here's one of the first Magic cards I did:
These days I'm mostly working on EDH generals, since then I actually get to play with them. The first EDH deck I ever built was Phelddagrif, hence the card above. Here's one of my current generals:
ive done a little bit of messing around with things of this nature but the only method i know involves using multiples of the subject matter and tiny foam spacers

Some ppl that I know have asked about EDH Generals in 3d form. I think if something happens to the general to make it leave the Battlefield, others have decided that you would need a flat General card as well for these instances. That way it looks no different than any other card int he deck.
Love your work Shazaam. You should post your Momir and Wort here as well. Make it a gallery of sorts so we can share our work. I've been doing this for a couple of years but haven't made too many 3d cards. Most of what I had made sold @ the Houston RoE Prerelease. So I'll be working on some more here in the next few weeks, hopefully.
Now, onto my works (sorry about image sizes in advance):
This was a commissioned piece for HomelandsRules
This was taken before I glued the background onto it. I may do one with the background missing as i like the way it looks.
I use other cards as spacers; it doesn't give as much depth between layers, but I like the more solid feel it gives to the completed card. Of course, I'm pretty sure that Seishiro Ookubo uses foam spacers and his work is the best I've seen. Speaking of which, does anyone know if he still goes to any conventions or major events as a guest artist? I'd love to see his work in person.
I have an extra copy of Karona to shuffle in if I need to; haven't had to yet. For most of my other cards I don't have an extra - if I have to shuffle them in I use a proxy. My Karona deck has copies of a bunch of legends in it like Lorthos, the Tidemaker and Kresh, the Bloodbraided and I have no more copies left after cutting all mine for 3d, so I have them proxied in as well and switch to the 3d version when they hit the battlefield.
That 3d Akroma must have been pretty sweet. I imagine it was like Karona, where all of the detail is piecework in the body. I'd like to take a crack at it myself, but at $3.25 a pop ...not unless it's a commission.
I am working on a black vise proxy 3d card.
I have most of a unsumon and a lava axe done.
I'll post them when Im done.

@ Megabug: i def can't wait to see what you got. Seeing the art of others really inspires me to try even harder.
@Shazaam: i was wondering, how the heck do you do the background to karona. i have yet to play with that type of bg but i have a piece coming up that may benefit from that type of bg.
WTF is this!!!! I've never seen or heard of these before and they are the coolest things I've ever seen!!! You guys are awesome!!!! I think I am going to very poorly try one... Just gotta think which to try.....hmmm....

Im just looking for some constructive critiscism for my deck. I've been wanting to get into competetive play lately so i need help figuring out if my deck is good enough to play at FNM.

@mEb: I dunno about Shazaam, but I use no less than 20 layers (12 cards, 8 filler) to make mine. Since I use them to make life counters, I need them thick to fit mah beads in. As for layer counts on sharrum, i would have to tinker with it in photoshop, but like i said i like to use LOTS of layers. If you want to try your hand at this, you will find some useful info over at the 3d card Tutorial thread found here:
Here are some 3D's I did. They are just scans so they don't look that good. I think that the swamp life counter is is 16 layers and it goes up to 99. Since I made the scan I've added a foil swamp on top to give the border a little more umph. Of course it is the border that goes with the art by Ron Spencer.
I really, really like the Swamp life counter. This inspired me to try and do one of my own; and I'd say it turned out pretty well; but I definitely need more practice(and a better knife). I'll get a scan up sooner or later(no camera)

You know, I have about 10-12 Mayael the Animas (including one foil for the top) just waiting to be turned into a 3D card, but for the life of me, I can't figure out where to start, and I suck enough at Photoshop where plotting that out would be a nightmare. If it wouldn't be too much to ask, I'd like to ask for some help with the layering and all. I'm not in any sort of rush, and if need be, I can get a hold of more Mayaels (though not too many, I've kinda cleared out most of the stores and trade binders :D).
The two Elspeths are a great thesis on women in general. When you first meet one, she costs a decent amount to attract, makes you stronger and gives you the feeling that you're flying. She also goes to great lengths to protect her loved ones from harm. After a while, she gets more expensive to maintain, gives birth like a sow, becomes less loyal after doing so, and tops it all off by wrecking crap around the house. Except hers, of course.
@Doom Lich: Well, I'd already done over 100 cards by the time I cut up my first rares Most of the ones I've done have been fairly cheap, too; the only one that was more than $1/copy was Karrthus, and that was a commission so I didn't pay for the copies myself.
@Peneffer: I love the Swamp especially too. I've never seen a life counter done that way - cool idea
@mEb: Good selection, that Glory Seeker looks great for 3D.
@Aniodia: Quite an undertaking I consider Mayael to have the most difficult artwork to 3D that would look amazing 3D'd (other generals might have harder artwork to 3D but usually it wouldn't look good 3D'd - for instance, Wrexial, the Risen Deep has too much water spray to do well imo). I'm excited to see how it turns out.
I don't think I would use any more Mayaels than you have, but then I usually use fewer copies than serrot_29 anyway. For Mayael, I'd use part of some of hidden parts of back layers for some of the front flowers, to get more layers from fewer cards. I do this on a lot of my cards; for instance, some of the goblin kids' heads in my Wort are from further back layers.
Hopefully serrot or someone else can help you with Photoshop plotting; I've never used Photoshop, and do all of my plotting as I go.
Yeah, Mayael is a bit tricky, which is why I haven't started hacking away yet. Though considering she's been my EDH general for about a year or so at this point, I figured going foil just isn't enough.
And the photoshooping is more to visualize the work needed to be done. Considering the relatively few Mayaels left locally (wasn't me >_>), a mis-cut on an important part wouldn't be too easy to fix. Herego, getting all the ducks in a row, being able to plot out exactly what to cut and where to glue and space would be a great help for putting something into motion.

Ok here is a real quick little ditty i put together on photoshop. Again real quick just to visualize.
the black border is foil (as indicated in the picture)
as for the text box, i always like to put it a few layers below the actual card. it gives the 3D'ing some balance so your not just looking at half of a 3D card and it makes you feel like you are reading it from a little window.
top layer: (green). Just a couple of flowers and the red flowers by her head.
Second layer: (red) again just a couple flowers around her head to kinda make it disappear or hide in the flowers
third layer: (purple) same explanation as second layer
forth layer: (light blue) adds just a little bit more depth to the picture
fifth layer: (orange) I made her face the orange layer. not too deep but not right at the front either. this is so its like she's a little bit hidden but not totally lost in other details.
sixth layer: (dark blue) this is the layer for other flowers around her. what ever is kinda left. Also, if you are just using the foil card you have for the border around the art, i thought why not cut out the eyes of her on the foil card and put them in behind the eyes of the fifth layer to make her eyes foil. I thought it would be a nice touch.
ok that's how i would do it. keep in mind this is only to visualize. also, when you do this always experiment before you glue to see if you need more filler layers (layers that you can't see that raise up other layers). I always use them because one layer of separation is never enough between one layer and the next.
There I think that should be everything for now. Let me know if it helps or not.
Wow, I didn't expect responses so quickly. Thanks, serrot and Peneffer. Unfortunately, most of my time will be spent either working overnight retail or sleeping (like what I should be doing now, actually), so anything that may come of this will have to wait until Saturday at the earliest. However, when I get something to show, you can bet I'll throw something up here.

I'm also excited to see those, Megabug. I'm curious to see which Unsummon you used (I think either Conflux/10E or ABU art would both be great for 3d).
Here's another card I made. I just finished a commissioned Karrthus, too, and I'll get that art up soon.

You're doing this to RARES AND MYTHICS?
Imma find where you live and steal all your rares, because obviously you either:
A. Can't be trusted with them,
B. Have too many of them, or,
C. Both.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
