I copy/pasted and modified the sprites directly from Super Metroid.
The background and lettering is completely custom (based on the Arial Font) made by ridiculously inefficient programs I wrote in C#.
The for-printing images are the right size to print on a 8.5x11 page of cardstock at 300 dpi with a 1/4 inch margin on all sides. If you do, the overlays will be exactly 2.5 by 3.5 inches, the size of Magic cards and tokens.
I don't think anyone's done these yet. I did them for Nissa, Worldwaker.
Had fun with the arts but I'd like to find a better one for Plains...or maybe not. I just don't like the wings.
Hope I got them right. Pretty sure I came close, at least. Please help..

As of today, March 19th, 2015, we are making a change to the rules to the Official Custom Token Thread. Going forward all token images must be hosted offsite. Additionally, tokens utilizing any elements from Wizards of the Coast's Intellectual Property MUST include their copyright information & the words "NOT FOR SALE" on them. This includes but is not limited to: The Magic Card Face, Power-Toughness box, Creature Type line, Mana symbols, Tap/Untap symbols, and/or any other icons or symbols from the game.
The OP of the thread has been updated to reflect this change but here are the new rules for your reading pleasure:
All tokens must be hosted off-site. Non-compliant posts will be moderated & the images removed.
Tokens may not be exact or near reproductions of actual WotC product.
NO discussion of printing or proxying techniques. This thread is concerned only with the manipulation of digital imagery. The staff of MTGS does not condone counterfeiting & will not have the community put at risk over this.
Tokens utilizing elements of WotC's IP must display the standard WotC copyright as found on official product, in line with the Artwork copyright rules.
Tokens utilizing elements of WotC's IP must display the text NOT FOR SALE, preferably below the copyright line.
Users of this thread are expected to report violations of these rules. Contributing to the thread while failing to report ongoing transgressions that put this site at risk may result in moderation of the active users.

if you're going to post artwork that is not your own (this includes other's artwork that you have copied or modified) make sure you are within the guidelines of Fair Use or make it clear that you have permission from the artist. If you post a piece that is based on someone else's work, or contains work created by anyone other than you, you must properly credit the artist. Properly crediting the artist means posting either:
the artist's full name, e.g. "Linda Bergkvist"
the artist's screen name and the website where you got the art from, e.g., "squidinc at CGSociety.com"
In cases where the original artist is unknown because the source material is a cartoon (or similar medium), providing the show, character, and a link to the source image used is adequate.
You may give this credit in your post text or in the copyright line of the piece. The rule of thumb here is that if the artist can be found in an internet search with reasonable ease based on the information you provided, you're fine.
If you're just googling, post a link. If it's from an intellectual property, name it.
Examples:
"Original art of Twin Snakes by Yoji Shinkawa, Konami Illustrator. " – this is excellent.
I think so long as you are not using Wizards' design elements or something that clearly is mimicking those elements you should be okay. StarCityGames for example has their own take on the P/T & creature type line boxes but still include the Wizards' copyright information. With my own tokens I forgo all descriptive text (P/T, Creature Type, abilities, etc) just to be safe. Most of the time players understand what a token is along with it's P/T & abilities without needing the text.
I've been needing more soldier tokens, and it struck me that I have a bunch of character art that'd be suitable for it. Zombies, too. Feel free to take and use if you want to!

For the past two GPs I attended (as a judge) I've been giving out tokens with art by myself. So far they're pretty well-received. The Twin token was for GP Chiba (gave out about 100), and the Thopter for GP Hong Kong (gave out about 300).
I would like to make some custom awaken tokens for Part the Waterveil. What resolution should I be looking for with art? Any tips for printing would be appreciated as well, I scanned this topic but didn't see anything on the subject.
Hello. I am playing a thopter deck. I have noticed the lack of token for [thopter squadron] and request the help of the PS gurus. I am very (not so) good at Photoshop and I would like a thopter token based on the thopter squadron card. I would like this token in the old format.
As per my tradition of personally handing out tokens at every GP I judge, if you had met me at GP Nagoya last weekend you would have received a pair of these.
Hey guys, here's an Innistrad-themed spirit token I worked on recently. I'll be printing these out to give away at some of the conventions I'll be attending this summer. Feel free to share your thoughts!
Alright, so here goes. I am not very good at art, but have a lot of time on my hands, so I figured I'd give it a go. So, without further ado, my work and the finished token!

Hello all! I noticed that there wasn't an official token for spawning pit, so I made one myself! I got the template online, and the artwork was all done by me as a Photoshop painting. I know it definitely looks more like a black card than an artifact... but once I started with the idea, I just didn't stop
I hope you enjoy it! I had a blast painting it! Let me know what you guys think, i might make more tokens. I would like to make an ophiomancer token next.

Hello everyone, I want to share with you my concept for pixel art tokens. I made these two this afternoon and am really enjoying the creative possibilities. I would greaty appreciate any feedback, and would be encouraged to continue making artwork if these strike anyone.

I also noted the lack of decent thopters, and sought this thread out when I made some so I could share. They may not be exactly what you wanted, but I figured I'd share them anyway.
