Crappiest Magic Artwork?

  • #176
It amazes me, to no end in sight that classic, interpretive works are spat upon, while something like Commander's Authority sets hearts aflutter.

I've been thinking about how Magic's more abstract artwork has been nonexistent for quite some time. There aren't too many pieces that require someone to interpret it for themselves. This is probably done on purpose by WotC's art department, but I, for one, would love to see a few more less rendered, highly detailed works of art. Bring on the abstract to force me to interpret it myself. I like an aesthetic challenge.

Also, I appreciate Johannes Voss's work for the majority of the time, but there is something about the art on Commander's Authority that irks me. It is just too much. It forces itself on people a bit and is almost overbearing.

I will say, I never understood the what was going on in the George Pratt Hecatomb. It does look awesome though. Does anyone know if there was a period when Wizards decided against capitalizing the name of cards?

(BTW, I have no idea how t go about linking to pages ot images. Any advice would be appreciated.)

I'm sorry guys but I saw that no one has mentioned Skeleton Ship yet, because that has to be the best worst art ever. I mean there are skeletons riding sea turtles (like total bosses) and the artwork for the ship itself is, well, just wow. Also it's a legend so you know it's ballin'.

Flying sea turtles no less, and it's a combination piece of two artists...One of them should have take a step back and said "Wait a minute, this isn't right." errata would read creature - legendary boat.

As for Ebon Praetor It's obviously a metaphor for Avatar, with the Bunny demon(should be a creature type!) representing corporate greed, and the demon representing the military pulling the poor oblivious blue people to their doom at the hands of the Anteater pilgrim who represents. . .anteater pilgrims of course. This card started the idea for James Cameron and Zendikar block fleshed it out with floating islands and baloths.

Silkwing Scout is still on my top hated. Elementary school quality. Everything she does is garbage and I rage when people swoon over her.

Hanna, Ship's Navigator, and I play with her as my EDH general. She's referred to by a friend of mine as a burn victim - something about the face, which is a shame, because there are so many better depictions of her that exist out there (see associated artworks here).

I rather like how she's drawn in Energy Flux and Protective Sphere, but of course, in the latter's case, Rebecca Guay is awesome.

In this thread: boys complain that art by women doesn't have big throbbing phallic figures or burly men or breasts all over.

Seriously, if you are going to complain about Amy Weber or Fay Jones:
    - Pick a card that's not from the first sets of Magic. They had no fricking idea what they were doing then. How could Fay ever know what kind of art they really wanted for Stasis? Whatever could have been her standard? Similarly to Amy Weber and Blue Mana Battery. She painted homeruns like Armageddon Clock or Illusionary Mask as well. If you want to criticize anyone's judgement, it should be the art director's.

    - Regarding Terese Nielsen, it's fine if you hate Silkwing Scout because she dropped the ball there, it's terrible renaissance fair quality kind of art. The rest of her work is usually great.

    - I think it's better to talk crap about new art -- I mean, what's a bigger let down? Word of Command 20 years ago, or Angel's Mercy today - god, that looks like something that would be decal on an El Dorado.

There's red wolf in dark ascension that just looks like a man in a wolf suit...it's awful. I can't think of the name now, I thought it was feral ridgewolf, but that isn't it.....bah...anyway. It's a common. Just terrible.

Which Angel's Mercy are you refering to? I suppose an argument could be made against the M10 version since her knees appear to be glowing, but the recent one from Avacyn Restored is guilty only of aping Kiss of the Amesha.

The best way to judge Magic art is whether or not you hear a sweet guitar solo in your head when viewing it. Kilnmouth Dragon? Yes. Selesnya Guildmage? No. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight? Double guitars.

Silkwing Scout was illustrated by Rebecca Guay, not Terese Nielsen.

I've seen very few Nielsen arts I didn't like. Despise is probably the worst I've seen, since the image is nearly incomprehensible at card size; the crying figure in the bottom right should have been moved more to the center and increased in size to make it clearer that she's the focus of the image. I'm also not a fan of Dismember, since it has an ugly color palette.

Everything else by her? Love it.

Yeah, thanks, it was a brainfart on my part. I agree whole-heartedly on your comments about Dismember and Despise.

I think the AVR one looks like a tacky Christian piece. The guitar method is pretty good.

Hehe, I have to agree. That Angel's Mercy card is pretty awful. Just ugly, plain and simple.

And I know you all might kill me for saying this, but I REALLY hate how the Avacyn card turned out.

I mean, seriously. Her pose is just awkward. Blossom and Bubbles and Buttercup ALL look more epic and more interesting than she does, and she's the namesake card for the set!

Granted, she's not anatomically incorrect, nor is the problem about painting or skill, because the wings are very well done.

But that moonsilver spear is so big and unwieldy, it makes me want to cry. The foreshortening is just plain WRONG, and you don't hold a weapon that high up on the shaft if you're intending to show it off (or you know, actually STAB something with it). Moreover, the legs have to compensate for the weight of the spear, which just throws her body into the ugliest diagonal ever.

Now, the following is just a spoof card but I swear it looks better than the real card ... Oh Jason Chan. Why, oh why didn't you paint two equally awesome Avacyns, instead of one really good, and one really not-so-good?

I cry whenever I see Oblivion Ring. Not only because whoever casts it is exiling my dearest creature on the battlefield, but also because of the awful pose (in my opinion) and perspective. Shame on you, Franz Vohwinkel.

Also, take a look at Voltaic Key. Is there any explanation for the disturbance of otherwise a great piece by those weird, spiderlike tatoos (or whatever that is)? Also, what is the voltaic key "charging"? Teferi's Puzzle Box? Can that even be charged? Oh, look. Franz Vohwinkel too.

verdant force. it's a good token card but i don't play it because i hate the art too much: it doesn't feel like, well, a verdant force. it looks like a weird green variant of smeagol...

The 5 stage of grief: how Spikes reacted to Sylvan Primordial ban:
    - Denial
    Quote from Wonderland
As of Feb 03, 2014 Sylvan Primordial isn't banned as per WOTC rulings.

    - Anger
    Quote from DCDT-Dito
our group as decided to avoid most of the ban because whe believe that the edh banlist commitee might be a bunch of monkey that only listen to player complaint instead of actual card power.

    - Bargaining
    Quote from DokuDokuH
I guess I was one of like 3 people who didn't use sypri in a degenerate way? Anyways, for animar (the only deck that ran him), I'm giving people a choice - I can either keep playing him, OR I can swap him out for Palinchron and go infinite, their choice.

    - Depression
    Quote from Voxxen
This ban has me feeling ornery and antisocial.
    Food Chain into Prossh.
    Erayo into Edric.
Sadness into "New to EDH? Here have a deck to play. Keep it."

    - Acceptance
Nope, Spikes will not reach this stage, they are too mature for that. Instead, they will still complain one year from now, like what they are doing with Primeval Titan!

I agree on the Oblivion Ring art. The one from Lorwyn was much better.

About those tattoos on Voltaic Key: Yeah, I was wondering the same thing with Scrambleverse. Truly amazing piece of art, but what's up with the tattoos? I'm guessing since it showed up twice, it was supposed to be a reference to a specific character who has tattooed hands perhaps? I'm just really under the impression that the tattoos were the fault of the commissioner, not the artist.

Bog Elemental. It's a giant piece of crap. If this is not the crappiest artwork...

oh and also the promo version of Demigod of Revenge bothers me. It looks like a penis with chains all around it D:

For me it's always been Rekindled Flame. The focus of the piece is so passive for a burn spell, and aside from that the piece as a whole just seems so flat and amateur-level. I've reviled it since it's unveiling, and no other art, old/busted or otherwise comes close in my opinion.
